Daily trust is not being fair here because the victim is a well known theft in maraba. He victim stole bag and he was caught,so the army decided on him and i think he deserve it.

But its not a new thing na , its bn a long aged culture practiced by d nigerian army, some even force an innocent public driver to swim in d dirty water in d gutter. Some even strip innocent people naked on d street of uyo here in akwa ibom state.
Even the criminals ,( armed robbers, thieves, kidnappers, burglars etc), they have no right to strip them naked and even the mob have no such right as well.

Oga, even sanity of life must be protected no
matter what. There should be dignity for humans
in our societies even if an robber is caught.
This is what separate a barbaric society from
civilised society.
Do you think they have armed robbery cases in
the western world? But they do not go about
stripping people Unclad (even in the presence of
minors) or carrying mod actions (such as beaten
with club, putting pepper into woman's vagina,
using tyre and petrol to burn human being alive)
against alleged or red handed caught criminals.
We must rise above emotional and sentimental
bondages in carry about our daily activities and
civic duties.

A mature reaction from the military, later they would say Amnesty International dey lie. They are tapes of even worse cases with different local and human right groups. No serious reaction because it didn't make Newspaper frontend.

Now that one has, I hope a complete military re-orientation would begin. Civilians are your custodians, treat them not as defenceless animals.

On a lighter mood, if Na when Uncle Doyin dey, e go say Soldiers have right to punish erring robbers grin

the names of those soldiers should be published
and they should be striped of all their rankings and sentenced \to death.
a disgrace.. this is the reason why the USA and other advance countries
cant help Nigeria with weapons.. it would result to more ABUSE.

From state-sponsored pogroms against southeasteners in the 1960s to today's army torture of Nigerians, the US and others know this and have been wary of selling arms to Nigeria. It is out of fear that Nigeria will turn the arms against its citizens.

Turning the arms against its citizens is mostly aimed at protecting one Nigeria for the benefit of less than 2% of Nigeria's population. The other 98% remain impoverished.

Imagine, maltreatment your fellow country man as if he's an animal. Most of the so-called soldiers we have are only good at flexing muscles against innocent civilians and this is the main reason they joined army just to have opportunity to oppress people.
God punish them and their fathers.

I believe Mararaba has a police station and there is provision for prosecution in the Nigerian constitution. When did army men or the mob become prosecuting officers?

The truth is that it is high time the military obeyed human rights of Nigerian citizens. The long reign of the military in the reins of government has made them to look at civilians as inferior citizens( some of them are gentlemen). Most sectors in the country has gone rotten. One could report the so-called armed robber to the police, only to find out that he will be released. The entire sectors need revamping.
The erring army personnel should be sanctioned.ENOUGH OF THE BARBARIC ACTS FROM SOME OF OUR MILITARY PERSONNEL.
Is it how the US Marines treat American citizens that make all Americans to be proud of them?

The Nigerian military has reacted to a photo published on the front page of Daily Trust newspaper today which showed a soldier torturing a man in Mararaba, Nassarawa state over the weekend. According to a statement by the army, the soldiers have been identified and will face disciplinary actions. The army press statement below...

The attention of Nigerian Army has been drawn to a front page photograph of some soldiers maltreating a suspected robber at Mararraba, Nasarawa State, on the front page of today’s edition of Daily Trust newspaper. Sadly, it is also trending on the Social Media. There is no doubt the photograph has done incalculable damage to the image of the service. The act was unfortunate and at variance with military ethics and professionalism.
The Nigerian Army wishes to inform the public that the perpetrators of the offence have been identified, summoned and would face disciplinary action.he Army has also reached out to the management of the newspaper over this poor and worrisome editorial judgement by giving this misdemeanour prominence in their paper. Alerting appropriate Nigerian Army authorities would have been a better option that will be met with prompt response. We wish to assure the public that the Nigerian Army would continue to protect and respect human rights and that this regrettable incidence should not be used as a yardstick to judge the entire Army.

A thoughtless response by the Nigerian Army. They're reacting because international human rights organizations were alerted. They and their police counterparts have no right/reason to torture anybody not even a convicted criminal. There's a constitution that governs Nigeria & they have to learn to obey it. When people talk of civilians engaging in jungle justice, I always tell them the custodians and enforcers of the law are behind it.

dearpreye:
Kudos to the paper that brought this depressing sight to the public. The Army keeps denying what's clearly the norm within its institution.

There's no denying the fact the Nigerian Army is a largely indisciplined institution, whose forces have an unquenchable appetite for civilian brutality and denigration.
