Beating helps a child to understand the laws of cause and effect, sow and reap and so on.
A child today will be an adult tomorrow and the law punishes law breakers too, serious crimes attract very sever penalties like execution.
So the ealier a child is made aware of this dynamics the better for him.

It's obviously figurative. Can't you see that?

Just like the 'rod' is figurative.

Don't look at those who understand it to mean hitting the child with rods. Come to think of it, rods now are made of metal. So... Rod?

As you can see in the picture, Rods in biblical times are those guidance sticks that shepherds use to hook the neck of any sheep that's about to go astray and draw them (gently of course to avoid hurting the animal's neck) back among the fold.

So even when taken literally (although not meant to be), spare the rod doesn't mean hit your child. It means any child going astray can be drawn back into the fold by the use of the rod. So figuratively, it means employing means of correction on any child about to go astray before they wander too far and become harder to find.

The bible doesn't mandate Christians to hit their kids as some would have us believe. It works for some as they say but it doesn't mean anyone who isn't hitting their kid is not raising them according to biblical standards.

To me hitting obviously corrects no one going by the level of deranged humans we've produced from hitting so far.

No don't beat a child, even though you want to, do it and stay to give him reasons why you did that. Daddy and Mummy love towards their kids is so important.

flogging, caning, spanking whatever it is or you call it-- it's not effective nor appropriate when it's all you rely on when training, guiding, educating, and raising a child. When we prepare a girl to be flogged we make sure she is made aware she is being punished for wrongful behavior-- behavior she knew was wrong but chose to do it anyway. It's not to teach her good behavior. She knows or should know what that is. We've trained and guided her on such things. It's punishment and it's sometimes necessary

This is talking from experience.
Theory and practical are two different things.

I laugh at the people who always say "talk to your kid instead of beating/canning them"because talking to an African kid is complicated because talking to them they will see you as a weak person who is not capable of disciplining them so they tend to always misbehaving.

It is usually appropriate to let the child understand what he has done while "correctively" spanking or smacking
