I think the Doc meant well but the whole thing went owry as he did something unethical that will mean bad for his career so he removed himself from the scene.

The family must be close to the Doc to hav had him attend to them at home not a hospital. No Doc will deliver a baby at home unless the baby already came out in which case he has to secure the baby and mother before taking them to the hospital.

DTOBS:

if I may ask, what did he do?
what simply happened could be a case of still-birth or a case of complication since the delivery is been done at home and I don't think proper procedure was followed neither were their any equipments on ground. and for the grandmother,it could be a case of shock seen her daughter and her new baby dead...and who knows the kind of disease in her body before.
For the doctor, he just have to flee cos he is the prime suspect. I do not see any hanky panky play out from the doctor in dis case....

As a medical Doctor my point of view is that the Doctor did not do anything that claim the patient life, the baby might be a big bady so before coming out the baby sophocated and the grand mother died of shock because of wat she saw, the patient must have died of PPH. The only mistake the Doctor and is a great mistake is that 1. You don't take delivery in a patient house because no matter the number of instrument you took there you cannot be well equipped. Running away is another mistake, because running away means his imcompetent. RIP to the dead

I refuse to believe you are a Doctor

undecided why home delivery? Facilities to prevent emergency situations like this are not in homes, why couldn't the doctor get an ambulance over since he works with a govt. Hospital? As much as I wanna believe the doctor is clean... he has some serious answers to give
Ambulance Ke?who is going 2 pay 4 it?when they charge #50G

For all you know, the doctor might have gone there to certify dead bodies....maybe the woman and the baby were already dead while the grandma was taking the delivery, the fear might have caused the grandma to to eventually die when the doctor broke the news. Patient will never tell you the entire story....trust me on this

True!

The young doctor probably ran away from the scene to avoid lynching from angry mob that patient relatives might galvanize with their wailing.

Nice decision from the doctor, if you ask me. His only mistake was visiting the patient that was stupid enough to attempt home delivery, and I suspect the patient might not have even registered for any ANC program.

You don't know how barbaric Nigerians can be. All it takes is wild and false accusations from patient relatives and the whole neighborhood will descend on the poor man in jungle justice style.

He ran for his life, which is a primordial instinct of every human being.

This post is the most logical one so far.........."the doctor was said to have rushed into the house at night"...meaning there was alredy a problem.not as if labor just started.my best guess is that somthing was wrong with the mother at the time( maybe she was bleeding profusely from delivery process alredy started by d present grandmother and absence of other close relatives mayb she asked dem to step aside so she wud do her thing)
Then after d doc came ......he/she delivered d baby whether dead or alive its not any of his fault, cause at d time, that was d most obvious thing to do......not rush to d hospital staright " i guess he met d whole mess halfway"
Yes in my opinion the doctor should first run away, even if its not his fault because we nigerians act faster than we think, they would easily have mobbed him bfor asking questions and he/she would have died by now.....remember he called a relative to inform them before he left. So he wasnt tryin 2 cover anythin up.
The fault of the doctor was accepting to go to the patient s house instead of telling them meet him at a specified hosp immediately....buh somtimes dependin on how close a patient is to you, you just cant say NO

Nelico:
This is a complex issue. Why should women even so called graduates act foolishly often during labour and delivery. May be her mother was taking d delivery and being a quack, she was not trained to recognize danger signs which prompted her to call an innocent Dr. when the woman was convulsing (ecclampsia) or bleeding from cervical tear or ruptured uterus from prolonged obstructed labour, which also could account for fetal hypoxia, fetal distress and fetal death. Being at odd hour 3am with the teaching hospitals on strike over non payment of Drs salaries and arreas, would it have been better the Dr refused to attend to the distress call? How can he get all emergency drugs, drips, blood or theatre to do the needful if the woman was already unconscious? Women should be wise enough to stop these home deliveries, traditional birth attendants and church deliveries by quacks. Govt hospitals have trained Drs (gynaecologist), of which i'm one, who can detect early and promptly manage complications. Any Dr. can flee to avoid attacks by angry family. But when he explain his side of the story, u will even reward his effort. For the family to shy away from the case means they are aware that the Dr made frantic effort to salvage the catastrophic situation. I've had courses to scold ignorant husbands and family members whenever they bring women that has laboured for days at home with a dead fetus in the womb and the woman already dead or very close to dead (unconscious, bleeding profusely in heart failure or convulsing).

Ur write up is not totally true brother, we doctors make sure we give pregnant women an EDD expected date of delivery ......dat date is not for making merry ...but for patient to prepare well ....buy her baby stuffs, make sure enough fund is available for delivery, have her husband around her incase important decisions ar to b made, make sure she s not totally far frm d hosp or have ur brother around to drive d car at anytime weda in d morning or midnight.....so..........labor dosent com like a thief in d night most times......it is somwer around the EDD (COUNTERING UR FIRST AND SECOND POINT EVEN THIRD POINT)
We dnt advise women to book hours befor labor........(mayb ur choice of word here is d issue...).they shud report to d hospital at any sign of labor that would have already been communicated to them if its their first time
So the above scenario was tthe fault of the family who did not take her to any hospital at the first sign if labor.....remember 9months is enough time to make money available and hosp of delivery known even if the public ones are in strike.......infact self the husband is abroad meaning ders no issue of lack of money

You said the Doctor "was not equipped and staffed to do it" in an emergency such as that, yet you failed to tell us what the Doctor that was contacted at the dead hour would have done or what the lady should have done in the midst of her labour at that material time.
While i sympathize with the family for this great loss, my instinct is telling me that Edith's mother probably had attempted to assist her daughter to put to bed, only to contact the Doctor when the situation had already became complicated. The doctor who,on hearing the distress call, rushed to salvage the situation. If the Doctor is duly licensed, the law protects him to attend to patients whenever and whereever.
