Good. Just wish we have a vibrant local league and just as the Kenyan ladies have become the perpetual champions of women volleyball in Africa, we can do so with basketball.
A good performance in this tourney could lure DSTV to sponsor the women's league.

That is true. l do also wish the private sector steps in, where the league will not be in the hands of the bureaucracy of the ministry of sports. There are many companies/individuals in Nigeria that can afford to own basketball teams and big centres where they play their home games all spread across major cities in Nigeria (excluding some parts of the North).

volleyball is hardly a popular sport in Africa, didn't even know there was a championship for that. @topic best of luck to the girls, would be awesome to have 2 African champions in the male & female teams. Thanks for tagging me @CFCman, I appreciate smiley

How I wish the Ogwumike sisters - Chiney (6'3'') and Nneka (6'2'') - were playing for Nigeria. Nneka has already played for the US Women's national team.

You people are really trying so hard to kill these girls support base.

They need all the support they can get to excel, why bring politics into this now, they can do without such.

Are you sure about this? I know she has played for the under aged US team but not the main team. That girl was the WNBA number 1 overall draft. She and her sister will definitely add some muscle to this team.

Chiney has played for the American U-18 team. I don't know if FIBA have the same player eligibility rules as FIFA.

Nneka was part of the US team that won last year's World Cup; although Chiney has only played for the US U-18 team.

Naming after colors is certainly out of the question you know even though we have teams lyk les bleus.

CFCman:
The 2015 FIBA Women's Afrobasket tournament will be hosted by Cameroon from September 24 - October 3. Nigeria's women's national team - D'Tigress - will be aiming to win a 3rd Afrobasket title: the winner qualifies automatically to next year's Olympic tournament in Rio, whilst the runners-up and third-placed teams will advance to the Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament (playoffs).

D' Tigress are placed in Group B alongside Angola, Senegal, Egypt, Guinea and Algeria. Group A comprises hosts, Cameroon, Mozambique, South Africa, Gabon, Uganda, and Mali. The top 4 teams in each group advance to the quarter finals.

D'Tigress beat Cote D' Ivoire 88-43 in the final qualifying game to qualify for both the Afrobasket and All Africa Games. This will be Nigeria's 8th appearance at the tournament. The Nigerian ladies have also advanced to the semifinals on four occasions - 1997, 2003, 2005, and 2011; winning the top prize in 2003 (Mozambique) and 2005 (Nigeria).

The team made it's debut in the 1997 edition hosted by Kenya, beating Tanzania 115-29. That result stands as the biggest margin of victory for D'Tigress at an Afrobasket championship. The team ended up winning the bronze by beating Kenya 90-62 in the third-place game.

Some current key players include Atosu Upe, Uju Ugoka, Sarah Ogoke, and captain Helen Ogunjimi. The team's Head Coach is Scott Nnaji.
The full squad includes: Nkem Akarawe, Nkechi Akashili, Upe Atosu, Juliet Chinyere, Juliet Currency, Adaora Elonu, Sarah Imovbioh, Regina Iornumbe, Ndidi Madu, Amaka Nwakamma, Chidimma Nwakamma, Sarah Ogoke, Helen Ogunjimi, Grace Okonkwo, Chioma Udeaja, and Uju Ugoka.
can you pls post the lists of past winners of the female afribasket
thanks

Hey uhm... Thanks Sir. Just that I... Uhm... didn't hear the door bell properly.
Maybe because 'The' was missing... *smiles broadly*

Alright! ! ! Here we go again Africa... Prepare to get ruled by the ladies but the malians are hard nuts. Same with the Angolans and Camerounians.

I remember watching, as a kid, the generation that gave us our first and second Afrobasket Women's titles in 2003 and 2005. Boyyy! ! ! Mfon Udoka(sister to Fmr D'Tiger and current San Antonio Spurs asst.coach, Imeh Udoka) was my big favorite coz of her playing style, leadership and of course, her ravishing beauty.

Well, this is a whole new generation now but we still got excellent B.ballers in Sarah Ogoke, Udeaja Chioma, Ugoka, Ogunjimi, and Akashili.

Go go go D'Tigresses! ! ! ! !

Hi Safari honey. Ready to witness possible victory 4 our girls huh?

Meanwhile uhm, Volleyball is actually popular in some african nations lyk kenya and Egypt. Nigeria is yet to put together a viable volleyball league that's probably why it doesn't come across as popular. I read sometime this past weekend about plans by the NVBF to do so.
