it is now that i appreciate all my maths teachers more and my parents for sending me to a good sch. Having A1 in maths from WAEC was clearly merited. Guys here saying 18 or 6 would clearly not pass any of the aptitude tests where i work. And later they'll say no jobs for naija.

My brother, I was shocked to the bones when I saw people coming up with crazy theories to prove that the answer is 6!

Goodness me!

I am not a mathematician but this is really embarrassing to me as a youth!Lol!

Even a primary 5 student can decipher the answer is 12.

Such basic mathematics, yet some people are complicating it and confidently for that matter!

You are wrong, the rule is to bracket addition before subtraction.Forget the fact that the minus sign is in front of 3.The minus sign is serving the outcome of whatever is in the bracket and not the 3.The 3 in the question is not -3 but - x(3+3) which is the same thing as -1x(6) which also equals -6. Therefore the answer is 6.
The solution is this
3+3x3-3+3
3+(3x3)-(3+3)
3+( 9 )-( 6 )
( 3 + 9 ) - ( 6 )
( 12 ) - ( 6 )
12 - 6 = 6 ans

You are an slowpoke to the core.

The answer remains 6.

It is only when dealing with variables in algebra that the prefixed sign of negative or positive applies.

In simple Bodmas arithmetics (which stands for Bracket, Open, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction) the last operation to be carried out is subtraction!

Naturally, you would have multiplied first then added the value to the 3 to the left.

So what stopped your dunce head from adding the values to the right?

As I said the final operation to be done is to subtract the values to the right from that in the left.

Dunces like you do not even know the difference between simple arithmetic problems involving absolute values to that of algebra involving variable assigned values.

Olodo bodmas implies that subtraction is carried out last.

Let me simplify it for you by substituting the value 3 for x

You will get the following :

X + X^2 - X + X

Note this is not a linear equation that must be equal to zero hence the rules of bodmas must be applied.

Therefore we must multiply first, then add before subtracting finally.

Hence we get:

[X + X^2] - [X + X]

[ X + X^2] - 2X

Substituting values for X = 3

[3 + 9] - 6

12 - 6

= 6

There is a reason why the OP stated that 95% of you will fail this simple test.

Olodo if you math is up to scratch, simply assign Y as the answer then do the differential in the substitute equation.

Thus:

Y = X + X^2 - X + X

dy/dx = 2X

Where the differential is the point value on a static linear scale i.e. the value on the x axis since we are not dealing with a linear curve

Substituting X = 3 we get the answer 6!

Go school una no gree go.

I hope you know that 3+3*3-3+3 is not the same thing as 3+3-3*3+3!

In the later case case it becomes 3+3-9+3 (multiplication has highest precedence)

Since we have all subtraction and addition we solve from left to right. (NOTE: It is a fallacy to say addition is done before subtraction. Both have equal precedence and are evaluated left to right)

Whatever you enter from the left or right should give you the same answer but as we can see you have two answers 12 and zero depending on how you enter the values.

This is not a linear equation that results in two possible values but a simple straight arithmetic equation that has only one answer which is 6!

The problem most of you shouting 12 have is that you are applying algebra sign rules to simple arithmetic where all values are absolute!

The negative or positive sign does not apply numbers on each end of the number scale but rather is the main mathematical operator!

Try and understand first and foremost the difference between algebra and simple arithmetics then you will see the answer is 6!

For subtraction and division, it doesn't hold

Enter the expression in a calculator and come back with the answer you got.

Enter the same values from right to left and see for yourself that you have zero as the answer.

You can not have two values for a simple arithmetic problem this only applies when dealing with algebra equations !

The cardinal rule to guide you in simple arithmetic and which applies also in algebra is

A + B = B + A

So your calculator should give you 12 as the answer if solving from right to left but this is not the case!

The answer Is returned 0 when solving from right to left!

The real solution is 6!

Before you start any bodmas equation you must first include brackets

Very funny guys around here.

Meanwhile, this is how it is solved all numbers have signs in front of them that cannot be neglected, showing all the signs for the question it will look like this

(+3) (+3) x (+3) (-3) (+3) ........ eqn (1)

eqn(1) can also be written as

(+3) + [(+3) x (+3)] + (-3) + (+3) ...... eqn (2)

Now BODMAS

Brackets (allow the parentheses, only remove square brackets) i.e solve (+3) x(+3)

(+3) + (+9) + (-3) + (+3) ...... eqn (3) (if you disagree let me see your hands up)

There is no OFF, Division, Multiplication
so we move to the addition, we can add everything up apart from the one with the negative sign

= [+3++9++3+(-3)]
= [3+9+3-3]
= [15-3] = [12] = 12

No Long story

Please Note that the sign in front of a number belongs to that number exclusively and cannot be separated from it. If a number does not have a sign in front, it is implicitly positive.

Hence you can't do this
3+3 x 3 - 3+3 = 3+(3 x 3)-(3+3) {Wrong}

Rather it should be
3+3 x 3 - 3+3 = 3 + (3 x 3) + (-3 +3) {Correct}

Exactly, -3+3=6 (most of them neglect da minus sign)

Dat is wea dea problem is....

Correct ans is 12.

So why is there a "B" bracket in BODMAS? Is it just there for DECORATION!
