These great Nigerians who were able to make this list of top ten Nigerians to have ever lived were chosen with criteria. One of the criteria is uncorrupted mind and vision for Nigeria; they must have influenced half of the population of Nigeria; they must have been self-made; they were fighters for justice and order in the society. These are the top ten Nigerians to have ever lived according to Better Times blog, 2015.

10. Dora Akunyili

She was born in the present day Benue State, but she grew up in the East of the Niger. She was a trained pharmacist; she was a fighter for justice and an eliminator of fake drugs. If not because of her, Nigeria would be loosing millions of lives yearly to fake drugs and canned foods. She was a true Nigerian woman, obedient to her people; she was a good mother. Her burial when she died was attended by head of states and other top functionaries in the government.

9. Moshood Kashimawo Abiola

He was born and brought up in Ogun State, Nigeria. He was a self-made business man who believed in democracy in the country Nigeria. He was a philanthropist who gave to all, regardless of tribe or religion. He was loved by all, and he died for the return of democracy in Nigeria.

8. Mohammed Buhari

He was born in the present day Kastina State. He was enlisted to the Nigerian army in the early 1960’s. He led Nigeria from 1983 to 1985, and his rule was free of corruption, the first government to achieve such feat. He is a righteous man and is not at all greedy. If his type continues to rule Nigeria, things will be better.

7. Wole Soyinka

He is a freedom fighter, a writer, a dramatist and a poet. He is known as the first African to win the Nobel Prize of Literature in 1986. He speaks boldly against any government, even the one that threatens his life. He has influenced the literature of Africa, and the lives of Nigerians.

6. Fela Kuti

He was the son of Ransome Kuti. He was a musician, a song composer, a freedom fighter and a true African. He is the one who established Afro beat. During his time, he wrote songs that often criticized the corrupt governments and sang for the good of the common people. He dressed and acted like a true African.

5. Chinua Achebe

He is widely known as the father of modern African literature. He is the author of Things Fall Apart, which has sold more than twelve million copies all over the world. He spoke the truth and gave couple of suggestions on what he believed would move Nigeria forward.

4. Herbert Macaulay

3. Odimegwu Chukwuemeka Ojukwu

He fought for his people when they needed him most, and until today, he is passionately loved by his people and all the people across Nigeria for his courage. He was a great orator and a fighter. He spoke his mind in national issues whenever he felt Nigeria was troubled.

2. Chief Obafemi Awolowo

He was a politician, who worked so well and was uncorrupt whenever he served in the government. He brought education to his people, and this is helping them unto this day. He is loved by his people. He is on the number two spot because unlike other politicians who have served in the government, his uncorrupt mind and his vision for Nigeria is outstanding.

1. Nnamdi Azikiwe

It would always be difficult to have a fair top 10 greatest Nigerians.

Other people will include the Saduana Ahmadu Bello, Sir Tafawa Balewa, Obasanjo and Gowon, some of our religious men, GEJ, Blessing Okagbare, Murtala Mohammed, Taiwo (the dude that designed the flag), Okocha and Kanu, NOI and a whole lotta other Nigerians.

They are all great Nigerians but in no measure greater than Buhari - check followers, achievements, status, portfolio, authority, and every other criteria. As I said, all those mentioned and many more are great Nigerians - just your hatred is having the better part of you.
