Or doing armed robbery in Lagos to impress your people back in the village especially during december holidays.

grin
they'd hit a lick in the city and use the money to buy rice and groundnut oil and take it to village to give to mama

in fact a Igbo friend of mine,Joe told me recently that most of the Igbos go to the city,do money rituals and use the ritual money to build big house in the village, buy chieftaincy titles

The Truth is that that stranger might take your destiny if you show him/her the direction
some people use that asking to collect your luck. so that's why in our culture we dont really direct
unless you know the person.

it does not have anything to do with greeting
oh i see. Vicadex07 na true?

Am sure your frend is Igbo...right?

Yoruba people are very much particular about respect and greetings...things Igbo people don't value.

It is ingrained in our culture and a typical Yoruba person especially if not learned takes an offense if proper greeting is not observed.

Your friend most probably inquired rudely from the old woman and she decided to teach him sense grin
You mean your hypocritical greetings? I dont need the nonsense greeting that you ll prostrate for me while deep in your heart runs a bitterness that is overflowing more than the lagoon.

Here you go

iamrealdeji:
maybe your friend didn't greet the elderly woman well,at least bend down his head a bit if he can't prostrate and she answered him with sarcasm. Yorubas do it a lot,if you don't greet them well, assuming you ask a woman:
Stupid guy : Mama, ejo o,nibo ni mo le gbe eru yi si . meaning; mama pls, where do I put this load
Old Woman : oo gbe si mi lorii . Meaning: oh,you can put it on my head
Stupid guy : Mama, Ore mi loni ki n gbe wa si Ile ohun. Meaning ; Mama, my friend told me to bring it to his house (meanwhile, the guy is already in front of his friend's house)
Old woman: O, omoo mi daadaa, oti koja ibe e,waa gbe okada pada si ona ibi to tin bo nii . Meaning ; Oh,my good son, you've passed through that area, take okada and go along the place you're coming from

This here is a concrete proof that you people reason totally different from us.
What has greetings got to do with speaking the truth huh
Isn't a greeting supposed to be voluntary again?
The woman could have simply told him that he was disrespectful and should greet her first, if not she would not direct him. Simple.
At least the guy would know that she is not helping him (for whatever reason, for which she is entitled).

Giving him the wrong direction is PURE EVIL. Take it or leave it.
Its simply a manifestation of Yoruba hypocrisy. An Igbo man or Hausa will tell you straight that you should learn to greet well and even tell you that he wont show you the place if you are rude. Yorubas and hypocrisy are like Siamese twins.

Please would like know why Yorubas derive pleasure in misdirecting strangers? A friend of my was coming to my house on Sunday and was very close to my street, he now asked one Yoruba elderly woman for direction only for the woman to send him miles back that he has long passed the street. Meanwhile the guy was almost on ther street, which the old woman knows.

Are there no honest Yoruba people again? This is bad before God and man. I had once been a victim. I don't know who to trust.

Is there any reason for this kind of character?
It is not a Yoruba character. It is more of a Lagosian character. Especially d 1's living on d mainland. When I say Lagosian I mean pple who were born & brought up in Lagos irrespective of tribe.

What an eye opener, to cultural differences. And attitudes. It would seem, from your statement, that misdirecting someone is payback for not being polite or greeting the elderly.
There was a similar situation I witnessed.

It occurred between a Yoruba elderly lady and a young lady that is non yoruba.
Instead of misdirecting the person in question, because there was no "respect" as you put it, the girl came to the oady's shop and said I'm looking for "XXXX" street without greeting, the elderly lady greeted the young person, "Good afternoon ma, how can I help you?"
The young lady realised her mistake and greeted the elderly lady back.
Respect is earned and it not to be used as a weapon.
So dat means d OP was wrong 4 generalising. Yr response should hv been directed 2 d OP and not vicadex07. Instead of correcting d OP u trying 2 caution another who is trying 2 defend his tribe 4rm defamation. u can insult me if u want but pls don't call me Yoruba because I'm not.

It's just a "Big City" attitude problem. Its Global. Go to any big city and ask for directions and you're likely to get misdirected. Your best bet is ask someone else after walking for 1 min, then another after another minute just to be certain if not you'll end up taking an unintended tour of the city. It's like they don't know how to say "I don't know".

Teach him sense? Can't she just ignore him instead of giving him the wrong direction. You guys take greetings too seriously as if it'll add a penny to your account. A friendly hello or good morning is enough and you don't even have to bend when greeting

fearful philanderers always feel threatened at the sight of strangers hence their resolve to AVERT the danger through wrong direction cheesy

Reasons are below.

1. We Yorubas do not want you fake drug manufacturers and kidnappers in our region again. The Biafruad land is there for you
2. Nonentities like you are suspected kidnappers so we have to find a way to mislead you so that you can miss your targets.
3. Why don't you ask fellow Nigerian Jews a.k.a. Biafrauds, we Yorubas are not direction givers.
4. Google map is your friend, next time use it. It can even direct you to the nearest brothel where your sisters are selling their smelly pu-ssies.
5. Next time ask a Hausa man, but don't try to steal from him because Hausas are always with their daggers.
