Albinos Face Serious Discrimination In Africa, Says Albinism Network (2) (3) (4)

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions that the society attaches to people living with albinism. In some communities, it is a common belief that a child born with albinism is conceived when a woman has intercourse while she is menstruating, also some communities believe that albinism is a punishment or a curse from the gods or the ancestral spirits due to wrong done in the family. It is a fact that albinos face discrimination and stigmatization, for instance, you cannot be accepted into the military or paramilitary as an albino. The condition predisposes them to skin diseases like cancer and poor vision due to the absence of melanin. Albino children are often made jest of in school. In some parts of Africa like in Tanzania they are highly sort after for the effect parts of their bodies have in preparing black magic portions. Recently, a young albino male in his early twenties committed suicide in Lagos, he left behind a suicide note stating the reason for his action was due to depression caused by his condition.

It's normal for an army to not want to employ people with poor health and sight as soldiers. I wouldn't call it discrimination.

That's a situation in TANZANIA and parts of Southern African Countries.
NOT Nigeria or West African countries, we treat our Albino children like our other children.
Not a curse, not isolation, Albinism has been normalized in west african communities, we are not stupid like our tanzanian neighbours.

show us the proof, they are not hunted like goats in Nigeria.
Maybe school bullies or neglected by birth parents, but nothing national,
don't place more dirt on Nigeria, we already have so many issues in Nigeria and Albinism is not one of them !

Maybe you need to read this http://dailypost.ng/2015/08/17/23-year-old-albino-commits-suicide-in-lagos/ one doesn't have to be hunted like a dog or goat to feel stigmatized

Here's another post you might want to read about their thoughts on their exclusion from the military and other security services

the first article is of an albino-nigerian commiting sucide
The second is from a "forums page" of albino-nigerians angered and protesting against the community and the government for certain set-asides, they want their voices to be hear, just like every other group of people in nigeria with a condition or disability, we have the same issues with albinism in Nigeria as they do in Europe and the Americas. Nothing crazy, nothing savagery like in Southern African countries.

You need to be more empathetic to their plight, if you were an albino or had an albino sibling, relative, friend or child you won't be saying this.

I have a question...

Why is albinism much more common in black people than any other race?

They always kinda make me sad sha, in Africa they are treated often as almost disabled people and getting married is complicated for them.

WHO Studies Findings report a higher prevalence of albinos in urban parts of Africa, possibly due to various factors like higher population density and rural-urban migration in search of education, health care and indoor occupations.

The WHO reports also indicate a greater number of individuals with albinism in the younger age groups (below 30 years). In the Eastern Central state of Nigeria , 89% of identified people with albinism were in the age of 0 – 30 years while another study reported that 77% were under the age of 20 in the same Nigerian state. Also in Cameroon , Nigeria and Tanzania , observations indicate a low number of people with albinism in age groups above 30. This statistics points to an increased mortality of people with albinism.

In Nigeria , one study collected written accounts of people with albinism. These individuals stated that they tended to be more withdrawn from social situations to avoid being noticed, they were more emotionally unstable and had less assertive personalities than people without albinism. Also, they considered our society to be generally unkind and rejecting, even though they did have close friends, maybe this is why some may experience difficulties in getting married.

Rural-urban immigration affecting genetics? Nawa o. I mean it's a mutation sha so maybe it has correlations to certain environmental factors.

That last bit is really bad. I think it's worse in Nigeria than in some parts of the world. My friend dated an albino once and she kept talking about how he was actually cool and fresh and handsome blah blah blah not like the rest of them. I was like ahn ahn, no be human being e be? It's sad, really.

I misunderstood your question, i don't really know what causes it, i only know it's hereditary. Your friend is funny grin the only difference is the color of their skin

I feel for them, I have a few albino cousins and I treat them the same as anyone else in my family.

At the end of the day it shouldn't matter whether your light/dark skin. I find them to be beautiful people.

It's more common than in whites, but not much more common. First, Albinism in whites can often be concealed by makeup, hair dye etc. Second, certain gene alleles that are associated with Albinism in Black people are considered normal for whites and don't count as Albinism in them. One could even say that all whites are actually suffering from a particular type of Albinism.

MrsPhyno:

But they are disabled. They cannot do some things that others take for granted - walking with unprotected skin under the hot African sun, for example. This is the very definition of a disabled person - one who cannot do some things that others take for granted.

So, white people are disabled, because the very fair ones among them also burn easily in the hot African sun- and get freckles and dark spots?
