Please, does anyone know the approximate minimum daily water requirement for a stand of plantain? I have a farm at a location where there is no water available anywhere in the vicinity. I am considering making a well, borehole, or supply water to on-farm reservoirs by water tankers. So I want to make a plan on that.

Related to the issue of irrigation is another question: what sort of problems am I liable to run into, if I decide not to water my plants, and how severe can these problems be. My reason for these questions is that it will be very difficult for me financially to fund the irrigation project. So I want to see if avoiding it would not be too catastrophic for me. For your reference, as for 2 weeks ago, here is the look of one batch of the plants:

Thanks
the weather of that area is still very ok even during dry season
what i will advise you is to do manual watering at least 500L of water for the farm per week till the time rain resume fully.
It will maintain normal growth and reduce stress of the plantain.

The best crop you can cultivate this for maximum yield and profit is plantain. Start your own plantain farm.

In that case, let me bring in my maths. I may be wrong, but allow me to display my ignorance, perhaps, I will learn more from the experts' corretions.

Each plant will occupy 2.5m x 2.5m = 6.25 m2.
The total available land area = 100m x 50m = 5000 m2.
The No of plantain suckers that can be accommodated, assuming 100% land coverage = 5000 m2/6.25m2 = 800 suckers.
If we think 100% land utilization is not realistic, then 90% coverage would mean we can comfortably push into the ground, 0.9x800 = 720 suckers.

This is way more 150 suckers. Please let me know if I made a mistake in the calculations, so that I may benefit from your knowledge. Thank you in advance.

you are absolutely right
100 by 50m is different from 100m by 50m
about 150 suckers will be ok for 100 by 50m while about 800 suckers will be ok for 100m by 50m

you are damn correct. With your analysis, 6 plots can occuppy 4320 suckers. That's meaningful.

6 plot will only accommodate 800-1000 suckers if its 2m by 2m and 2.5m by 2.5m respectively and not up to 4,320 suckers

You mean 6 acres?

Also, when people mention plots, I personally get confused. It looks like there is no general standard for what area of land constitutes one plot. For example, I see some people saying a plot is 120 ft x 60 ft (claimed to be Lagos standard), while others say that a plot is 100 ft x 50 ft (claimed to be Ibadan standard). Also, I heard sometimes ago that the federal government standard is more than the private land standards. This leaves me confused. On the other hand, it seems acre measure is more general, and same as in other countries, ie,

1 acre = 4046 m2 = 43,560 ft2

Therefore, I advise when we ask questions relating to areas of land in plots, it is better to clarify which type of plot, Ibadan, Lagos, or federal government plot, or better state the area of the land in m2 or ft2. The survey plan of the land will have the total area, and if you dont have that, you can use your gps enabled mobile phone to measure the area: it is very easy.

Thank you, and I welcome your corrections and ideas please.

Simcha:

There was a typographical mistake. 100 by 50ft is a plot that can contain about 150 suckers while 100m by 50m is bit more than acre of land that will contain 800 and above depending on spacing used.
