denisfidha:let alone the mineral wealth, the energy potential is beyond imagination, congo river has the potential to generate over 35,000 MW of electricity .that about the same electricity produced by south africa .in recent year kenya has suddenly attracted global interest after our Geo-thermal potential increased tremendously.this year another well with a potential of over 300 MW was drilled http://constructionreviewonline.com/2015/07/geothermal-energy-in-kenya/ ,dont forget the coal discovery years back but due to our snail pace .it will take time before common kenyan benefit from it.its not even the foreign countries slowing us,its our own individual selfish interest that is slowing our progress

craziebone:you are right. Every nation has its own unique interest. NigerIa may not want to head a peace process in DRC at this time, I think southAfrica is the only unengaged African giant at present. Let her go to CAR. Nigeria is busy, Egypt is busy, while south Africa is playing war games. It takes more than war games to lead Africa. You have to be there, in the middle of the heat. We have done this right from our first day as a republic and we are still doing it Burkina faso is a very fresh example. 3 Likes |

overhypedsteve:lets just leave the issue of deploying troops into this conflict zones ,my question is why can we have south africa train military personnel and nurture some of this countries e.g DRC .That would help tremendously in improving security of some of this countries.south africa has some of the top notch military facilities ranked among the world best ,why then do arican need to seek help else where outside africa! |

overhypedsteve: First, we are in Congo - who do you think invented the FIB and is its biggest contributor?? Second, our "war games" are part of our preparation to get the whole ACIRC (African Capacity for Immediate Response to Crises) operational. Currently, we are the only African nation to meet our responsibility with our formation being ready since December last year. Currently, our contribution consists of: - a motorised infantry battalion (9 South African Infantry BN) - a composite mechanised car squadron (Ratel-20 infantry combat vehicles from 1 SA Infantry Battalion, Rooikat armoured cars and possibly Ratel-ZT3 tank destroyers from 1 Special Services Battalion) - a light artillery battery (1 Light Artillery Regiment with 120 mm mortars) - a light anti-aircraft battery (10 Anti-Aircraft Regiment with Starstreak missiles) - a troop from 2 Field Engineer Regiment - a troop from 1 Tactical Intelligence Regiment - a composite signals squadron with elements including communications intelligence teams. - a mobile air operations team (MAOT) - two Gripen multirole fighters - two Rooivalk attack helicopters - two Oryx medium transport helicopters - two A-109 light utility helicopters - two C-130s. - a medical task group and a level-two hospital - Military Police platoon. This formation, as we speak, is being held at almost constant readiness - at MASSIVE expense to the SANDF. This contribution stands on-top of the ~1,500 men, 3 Rooivalk, 2 (3?) Oryx deployed under the MONUSCO FIB or the other ~1000 deployed under AMIS/UNAMID. Furthermore have also made available our facilities at our Battle School in order to host the largest military exercise in Sub-Saharan Africa (post-1994) in order to help the rest of the continent get their formations deployment ready. Third, you must be incredibly naive to think that Nigeria could lead anything in the DRC. Not only is the DRC a SADAC member but it is at the cross-roads for major regional (Uganda, Rawanda, Tanzania) and global (Western/Chinese Business interests) powers while, furethermore, the MONUSCO deployment has a very clear plan and stratergy that they have been employing which is beginning to pay dividends. Quite simply you would be trying to host a party in someone else house.

africaken: The SANDF just finished training a brigades worth of Congolese soldiers and it looks like they will be training another soon. Our military facilities will be used in the oncoming months to host 5000 African soldiers for joint exercises in preparation for getting regional crises response groups online. As for why we arent involved in others: 1. We have SADAC to worry about first 2. You dont want to step on toes in other parts of Africa 3. We are stretched thin as is. SANDF is struggling to meet its requirements - and the head of the SAAF recently announced that the SAAF was more operational outside of South Africa than within. Even if we get what the Defence Reveiw asks for (essentially a doubling of defence spending) we simply dont have the boots to put on the ground on anymore deployments unless we cut existing ones 3 Likes

africaken:No amount of expensive equipment can replace, well trained and motivated Soldiers. Saudis should spend money on improving the quality of their Soldiers, and in the mean time they should send their money and equipment to South africa Or other African Countries that could put such things to good use... I wouldn't even wana imagine the devastation countries like Kenya or Nigeria would inflict on Alshabab and Boko Haram if they had what the Saudis have. 4 Likes |

Centrifude: Send their equipment to South-Africa..... Why They should please send them to Nigeria ......... Eurofighter typhoon, military transport aircrafts of all sizes, surveillance systems, Abrams Tanks, M-ATV, MRAPs and F-15 Eagles. If Nigeria had half the equipment at the disposal of the Saudis, we won't have a boko-haram problem on the scale we have been seeing. 4 Likes |

Henry120: S.A is in serious need of heavy and medium lift aircraft, Tanks, IFV etc... If we had that kind of money and equipment our ACIRC Force wouldn't be having so much trouble getting of the ground. We would be able to help many troubled Countries on the Continent, SANDF has the training and Motivation but lacks the funds and equipment to fully go out on its own and take on challenges without people interfering. Nearest example is the DRC where we have Soldiers who are willing to fight but our Commanders can't do much because they take orders from the U.N who are basically useless, and our guys end up sitting for months in a Base without doing much, then they end up getting bored and do careless things like go out drinking and Sh!t. |
Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by Centrifude(m): 10:55pm On Sep 27, 2015 |
africaken: Exactly! Most of those guys aren't even motivated to be there, I read that many Saudi low ranking Officers are from Yemeni tribe or of Yemeni descent. Saudi Soldiers have proven to be useless they've been pushed back, and apparently Yemeni forces have been able to attack Saudi border cities. |

I've said it repeatedly on the other thread: all this terror is inspired by the West! Look what Eeben Barlow of the PMC,SSTEPS, said ” Barlow continued. “Prisoners have told us that Boko Haram is and has been supplied and supported by ‘Europeans’ who have arrived in their safe areas by helicopter.”Read more: http://sofrep.com/40700/eeben-barlow-speaks-pt-5-external-drivers-nigerias-war/#ixzz3n1CIACFd SSTEPS,was on scene just before the elections and even took 2 KIA,btw. Fyi,Barlow is no 1 in his tiny niche, advising and fighting COIN wars everywhere from Angola,Sudan and Sierra leone and Sri lanka-when he speaks on this subject, listen! Also,he's not giving his opinion but stating a fact:its impossible to lie under interrogation;you may resist up to a point depending on your dedication and training but everybody talks! How else does BH always seem 2 steps ahead of the NA when they lack local support-come the Bleep on guys! |

Centrifude: to be honest if you are some skeiter and you are bored out of your mind its quite a sweet deal 1. Go out drinking 2. Miss curfew 3. Get flown home 4. ?? 5. Profit A night out on the town and an early trip home dont sound so bad. I mean seriously, how bad could the punishment for missing curfew be? Here in Korea you see Americans AWOL all the time in places like Itaewon or Hongdae (their curfew is 11) so it doesnt seem to be such a big deal in the military world. |

overhypedsteve: The DRC is in the best shape it has been in ages. Problem is simple: South Africa wants to kick arse and take names but: 1. With budgets as is we need to rely on UN funding, which means UN ROE, UN politics (gotta negotiate man) and general UN bureaucracy 2. Divergent interests: Rawanda and Uganda have their proxy's, even Tanzania who is part of the FIB tacitly supports some rebel groups in the area. This means that whichever group you target will result in someone somewhere getting all buttflustered and kicking up a stink. While furthermore, instability in DRC is good for Russia/China (major arms supplies) as well as world buisness at large (better profits from mineral extraction) The DRC situation is one of the most complex issues in the world and the solution is, as they say, "slowly slowly, catchy monkey" |

patches689: Not interested in an argument, but also not wanting the public misinformed. Can you please give this forum sources to prove that South African invented the Congo FIB and not the United Nations. Also prove that SANDF currently deploys in Congo, Starstreak anti-aircraft missiles and Gripen jets to fight M23 rebels that have no air force . 2 Likes |
Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by patches689: 3:51am On Sep 29, 2015 |
agaugust: 1. I said that the deployment in the Congo was under the UN, and South Africa was the main force behind its invention and its biggest contributor. http://unicpretoria.org.za/2015/01/19/un-special-envoy-for-the-great-lakes-and-south-african-ministers-review-the-situation-in-the-region-and-call-for-urgent-military-action-against-the-fdlr/ 2. read my post correctly, I did not say they were deployed to Congo, I said they were deployed under ACIRC. I also quite clearly explained what ACRIC is. The fact that I broke down the composition of the ACRIC formation, and then mentioned the MONUSCO FIB separately makes the distinction glaringly obvious. In future I ask that you take the time to read my posts properly. 3 Likes

patches689: The big challenge and this is the big irony is that SA which is championing ACIRC doesn’t really have the capability to support ACIRC… There’s a disjuncture between the capabilities that SA has and its ambition,” said Jakkie Cilliers, executive director of the Institute for Security Studies. President Zuma was hoping that the African Capacity force would be a quick, easy response to Africa’s most pressing emergencies – and a much-needed credit to his reputation. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. In pushing for a new, untested military force, he instead risks derailing what progress the continent has made in establishing a continental framework for military intervention, and may compromise ongoing peacekeeping efforts in the process. If, that is, South Africa can even afford it. DM Bunch of derailers. |

Henry120:The kill radius is like a missile range it is a bit misleading. The kill radius with contact detonation shells is influenced by things like the target area surface. In soft surfaces the blast will be absorbed. |
