I cannot agree with you more. I watched the screening, he was distancing himself from award of contracts as if that was not the pivot of governance in Nigeria. Governors don't sign cheques but some of us know enough to state without equivocal that governors are involved in the award of all major contracts under their watch. From the few allegations of ridiculously inflated contracts under Fashola, we can safely conclude that the guy is not at all whom he wants the public to think he is. Having been cleared by the senate, in this assignment as minister, we will keep our eyes on him and all the contract awards in his ministry since as he wants us to believe he is not keenly interested in the amount of contracts and his surbodinates can put any inflated figure to a contract without his notice. That attitude (if we can stupidly believe him) cannot help the finances of our country at this time in the face of dwindling fortunes in the income of government. |

SirWere:Fashola perform? Maybe or is he over hyped by the media?I will judge performance based on provision of infastructures, economic development, human resource development.how, many areas Iin lagos have access to portable water? SSincerely, tell me where does public water flow in Lagos. Most landlords resorted to boreholes and even this man placed a levy on boreholes.what about the health sector, how many hospitals are well equipped and functional? Even when fashola is sick, he doesn't go to luth.what about roads, u will agree with me that moving around in lagos is nearly impossible. How many new roads did this man build? The only new road he built, he charged toll on it.even when he got a loan from the world bank.now lets not forget , Lagos state generates an internal revenue of 20b monthly.so if u talk of performance, we should relate to the total revenue collected in his 8years, the total amount spent on projects, number of projects did and what he left behind.if you ask me, his performance was over huped by media |

aresa:its funny ow nigerians talk like illiterates atimes...before making an allegation, they should get facts and let the appropriate professionals assess it...the terms and conditions to it..there are many ways to actually make money without actually inflating it when there are many clauses on the contract that may never be activated but has been paid for eg...would i have the time to constantly come and assign roles to your new staff when i would have empowered a senior staff as an equal "administrator"?or be going into all the ministries manually to collect cummulative dat when i can easily schedule a competent software to do the task and send to me via the internet or even ask my own staff to go there on a monthly, quartely period to collect the data... in other terms, the website may even be serviced by a foreign company which in turn is handled by a middleman who acts as an agency they should gather or request all these facts before they make allegations... im not ruling out the fact that it was loaded but lets see the terms and conditions of such contract first... |

I was personally brooding over Fashola's response early this morning but Tonye barcanista always goes an extra mile to dig up facts and figures. I must commend him for this thread and will enjoin all comments to be made in the interest of the country, masses, state, and not party. First, Fashola is a Lawyer and Senior advocate of Nigeria. This profession confers on him so much knowledge as to how things are run in the country with relevance to state laws and the constitution guiding the Federal republic. It is a great heart break that such collosal embezzlement took place under his office and he pretends not to know. Thesame set of people shouting Alamiegheisegha is a thief are thesame people who will look the other way when confronted with facts that Fashola was corrupt as a governor. How does one weigh what is good and what is bad if not using facts and figures ? He opened a website with N78m and sank 2 boreholes with N136m. Now, given his pedigree, connection and also being a member of the ruling party, a man that should be answering questions at the anti graft body is busy trying to become a Minister of the federal republic. Who knows how many other such inflated contracts went unnoticed in his 8 years tenure ? How will Nigeria move forward this way ? I am not saying Fashola should go to jail or be incarcerated. What i am saying is that the senate who are representatives of the masses should look beyond the charisma and public figure of Fashola and ensure the discontinuation of such corruption in public office. All in the interest of the state. |

Hehehehehehehehe! I laugh in pidgin. This conversation is really interesting. It goes a long way to say that the Nigerian Youths aren't dumb as alleged by the 'elders' and I'v learnt a lot. Anyways, I think the OP made some points and those who replied have made arguments worthy of note. Suffice me to make certain deductions from the foregoing narrative: 1) Fashola wasn't under any oath whatsoever or legal cross-examination. It was more or less an interview session for a Ministerial portfolio so he has the right to self-defence and to counter questions intelligently (as most of us will, if put in that condition) using any mechanism at his disposal, as would any other nominee. ......For instance, d outrageous amount spent on website design was thrown @ him (Fashola) and he technically defended himself, whether or not he was right or wrong was left for the Senators to decode. #pls tell me who wouldn't do dat when in dat condition. .........The issue of the amount is sometimes a function of the contractor that executed d design and dat largely depends on the kind of website the State actually wanted (leme leave dat for the I.T gurus). More so, price range also differs cos what Mr. A will 'charge' to design a website will b different from the price of Mr. B since there isn't any fixed price to website design and dat goes for all other technical and expert jobs. #Bt trust me, dat amount was way outta line#........... ....Talking abt d issue of who signed cheque or not, the Chief Admin of a State can't categorically say he is unaware of what went out of d State coffers, or who signed a certain amount to be released and for what purpose. Cos b4 even d entire process is concluded, he (d Chief Admin) must give his express approval. And so to me, his claims on 'institutional process' is neither here nor there. Cos if dat should b be anything to go by, it simply indicates he isn't meticulous and his admin prowess is questionable. 2) It is left for the interviewers to ask him (using Fashola's interview as a case study) relevant and pertinent questions with regards to his antecedents as a Governor, Leader, Administrator and perhaps as a SAN. And hence they failed to do that, that is to the advantage of the nominee, bearing in mind that he needs d job else he won't be there. Cos I know u don't expect the nominee to remind the interviewers of questions they probably should ask him/her. Nobody goes to an interview room/hall and after d session, starts reminding d interviewers that.....oh! U forgot to ask me dis and dat. 3) And I think we should be more constructive in our criticism with respect to the OP's narrative and let go of issues bothering on political party sentiment, tribal inclinations and character/personality assasination cos we are one Nigeria and whether we like it or not, we are all inteconnected in one way or the other. So to an extent whatever affects A will have an impact on B as well. 4) Finally, I would say that our 'interviewers', the senators of the Federal Republic should bear in mind that they are representing the entire Nation and so questions that bothers on Nominees' skill set, admin and leadership prowess, competence, versatility on the issues affecting the Nigerian State and pragmatic approach to combating these issues rather than allowing themselves to be bamboozled by intelligent speeches and grammar renditions and applauding same to the utter chagrin, disappointment and disillusionment of the populace. #Fashola or any other nominee isn't the problem of Nigeria. #Not a fan of Fashola or any other nominee. The Senate should try and do a good job for us. #Lets all hope for d best as we keep evolving democratically. #God bless Nigeria and NL. |

Fashola is a lawyer (SAN) by training and he has d right to defend him self BY any allegation level against him, what he has able to do in Lagos i think he deserve to be minister, and if u av any saint in ur State u can replace him. |

No one can blame fashola on this one. Unless, they can show the statistics of how much similar projects costs other states. And then demonstrates that Fashola,s own are over inflated. IT was the same Fashola that built the ikoyi bridge at 30% of the GEJ awarded cost of the yet to be completed new Onitsha bridge. The Lekki Epe Express road was awarded at about N1billion per kilometer while the GEJ government cost of the East west road has reached N2billion per kilometer and we are still counting!. Contract rates are supposed to be benchmarked with similar projects in similar environment. But unfortunately, only Lagos state out of the 36 states in Nigeria have accessible info on its website on all the states contracts and projects. That in itself is a good thing and a show of transparency! |

@OP, You've made your point. Nigerian politics is just a game a lot of people do not understand and no one will convince me enough that someone like Sen. Abaribe would have just swallowed that reply line, hook and sinker without any follow up question because his (BRF) reply calls for further questioning despite he is not the only one to be screened. Politicians simply juice around when You and I aren't watching and they are friends in the board and enemies outside the board just to confuse us. I am a fan of BRF and don't get disturbed by whatever form of allegation of fraud that might be leveled against him cos he had already earned a reputation even some Governors to come in Lagos might not earn. A simple bow and go would have saved the whole thing since they know they simply wanted to throw out a question so Nigerians wouldn't think they ain't working. Even an IT novice knows that amount is rather outrageous for the said contract but throwing it out on the floor without some technicalities is a sheer show of shame to the upper house and a disgrace to the Nigerian public. BTW, are they actually screening or just doing it for modality sake I think it's better any president appoints whom he deems fit to work with and stop the waste of time they are doing o'er there in the name of screening. |

menumchi:@ menumchi, I think you are about the only person that shares my perspective to this whole saga 1. Fashola like a typical smart ass is playing a chess game with his accusers 2. Fashola is toying the line of the burden of proof rather than self-defense. In other words, Fashola is saying is "Prove my guilt" rather than he proving his innocence. Conventionally, you're better of fighting for a space when you are in the space and the opponent is outside, than both of you being inside the space or worse still you're outside and they are inside. Fashola will not tender any evidence to prove his innocence except the accusers can 3. One way of doing two above is to get someone to sneak out the details of the contract or get a court to compel them to make it public. The complication of this is unimaginable......it's not just worth it Be that as it may, here are my few thoughts 1. 8years of my career sojourn was spent in IT. I had even led software projects of similar nature in the past. 2. Can this project be worth 78million? it depends on how it's couched, the scope and associated software Licensing and consultacy fee. (Caveat: I am not going to answer yes or no, as I was not involved in LSG website projects). I have been in a project team of a software project cost $600,000. ERP projects cost in excess of a $1m and the end user only get to see web pages........ 3. Some also argue that software projects are intellectual proprietary works, hence the valuation is subjective. I remember I called for quotation for a a corporate intranet collaboration work based on Microsoft Sharepoint. (In other words, these companies were going to design using what Microsoft had already started and not that they were starting from he scratch).I had 2 top software firms in Lagos and was bewildered when I saw quotation of N18m and they will not bulge when I requested a downward review. I remember also inviting these 2 guys that had done web jobs for Guiness and didn't bother to call them for a second meeting when I heard the "ridiculous" stuffs they were talking about........... 4. At the end of the day, people could have padded the contract......can we prove it? |
