A huge protest organized by Medical students of the Imo State University, Oweri, IMSU, has somgradation being witnessed in Imo state educational sector even as they were beaten up and tear gassed by the Nigerian Police as order by Owelle Rochas Okorocha. This comes from the backdrop of His Excellency, Owelle Rochas Okorocha’s declaration of total free education up to university level.
Many would swiftly applaud such a gesture by His excellency, but it all came with a dire cost. An institution which has been recognized nationally for producing the best law students and competent doctors(although with a long stay) amongst others, has just been totally devalued under the administration of Governor Okorocha. Consequently, the said university has lost its NUC accreditation in key courses such as medicine and surgery, law, medical labouratory and a host of other courses in the just concluded accreditation exercise held in July, 2015.
However, the loss of NUC accreditation in key courses might have been averted had the governor not used the school’s administration as his political tool. In five years of his administration, the school experienced not less than four vice chancellors, which he changes like garments. Such an act it bent on halting any meaningful contribution to the progress of the school. The most disastrous of all was the undignified removal of Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie, just few weeks to the accreditation exercise. Prof. Awuzie brought real change in the institution during his short stay. He attracted many Federal Government projects in the school under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETF). Things were working very harmoniously in the university under his administration, before the Governor had him removed just for political interests. Apart from the poor quality free education offered by Gov. Rochas, his only infrastructural contribution to the University was to erect three long halls, which stand to be potential death traps, considering the fact that one of the halls collapsed.
Anyway, I cannot deny the fact that he really did some appreciable work in the Imo State University Teaching Hospital. Completion of the new hospital complex as well as construction of an ultra-modern hall is highly applaudable. However, it seems the Governor has lost a glimpse of what is a priority and what isn’t. The route to the hospital is in a highly deplorable state, which is worsened by the incessant rainfall witnessed lately. Honestly, the road is so bad that taking a pregnant woman to the hospital via that route could lead to miscarriage. This situation has resulted in the hike of transport fare to convey patients to the hospital. Consequently, there are little or no patients in the hospitals and as such, the clinical students have little or nothing to experience. Moreover, there is an alarming rate of complications and deaths escalated by transporting patients via the Teaching Hospital road.
Amidst all these deplorable conditions of the university, the Governor is still fostering his habit of building and abandoning ‘irrelevant’ projects. Now, the question Imolites should ask their Governor is why is he building a new university in his hometown Ogboko, when the state’s only public university is in ruins? Why not focus the state’s resources on few meaningful projects that will make life easier for the Imolites? I assure you that the millions wasted in the abandoned university at Ogboko will go a long way towards transforming IMSU to one of the best three universities in Nigeria. Now, the tax payers money have been wasted and the state lies in ruins. Who will suffer it? The poor masses, obviously. Afterall, Rochas’ daughter just graduated from a university in the US, and none will ever attend our poor public schools.
Right now, the Medical School of Imo State University, Owerri is at stake. In few weeks, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria will come for their accreditation exercise. From all indications, it is by God’s that the school with retain its accreditation. #saveimsuth

Abagworo:
Nigerian medical doctors and researchers have
been challenged to dig deeper into finding a cure
for the Ebola disease rather than wait on the
western world for a solution.
Imo state Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha gave
the charge at the swearing-in /induction ceremony
of the 6th set of Imo State University medical
doctors held at the University Teaching Hospital
(IMSUTH) auditorium, Orlu.
Owelle Okorocha who promised that the Imo
Rescue Mission government will continue to
provide the needed infrastructural and medical/
research equipments to the institution to ensure that medical doctors come
out their best , urged the new doctors to see their calling into the medical
profession as service to God and humanity.
He congratulated the 56 grandaunts from the school and pledged a cash gift of
N500, 00 to the overall best graduating student in medicine and surgery, Miss
Olaedo Marcellina Izuagba as well as offered automatic employment to the
young doctor upon the completion of her Housemanship.
Earlier, the Chief Medical Director, Imo State University Teaching Hospital, Dr
Fredrick Anolue the Imo Rescue government for the improved infrastructural
development of the institution and for the industrial harmony in the
University through the implementation of the CONHESS/CONMESS salary for
health workers in the institution.
Dr Anolue noted that the Protuex digital X-ray, Flourascopy, Computerized
Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) will soon be operational
in the Hospital and reaffirmed the genuine commitment of IMSUTH staff in
playing its synergistic and complementary role with the University in training
of various health professionals in Imo State.
The CMD further disclosed plans by the institution to develop centres of
excellence in Minimal Access Surgery, Neuro-surgery and radiology. He
therefore appealed to government to assist in providing working tools for
some of the staff already trained in Germany, India and South Africa to
perform.
The event which was chaired by the Pro Chancellor, Imo State University,
Mazi Clement Owunna, featured the induction of the newly qualified medical
doctors and presentation of Certificate of Merit and a cheque of N100, 000 to
the overall best graduating medical student, Olaedo Mercellina Izuagba for
outstanding performance.
Present at the event were the Secretary to Government of Imo State, Prof
Anthony Anwuka, Commissioner for Health, Dr Edward Ihejirika, the Vice
Chancellor, Imo State University, Prof Alloy Awuzie, past Medical Directors of
IMSUTH and other well meaning citizens of the State.

I've been to the Teaching hospital before in Orlu, as a medical student, I must say the Teaching Hospital is not the best I have seen. Being a member of Nigerian Medical Student Association, I have been to ABUTH
LUTH
LASUTH
UITH
UNiabuja Teaching hospital
IMSUTH
Unical Teaching Hospital
BSUTH
Bingham Teaching Hospital
UTH
Etc and I must say, IMSUTH is the worst in this pack after Bingham.
The govt of Imo should do something about it.
By the way, the road to Orlu is the worst I've seen for a long time. How can emergency cases be treated there when the IMSUTH is in the forest.
The sighting of the hospital is faulty.

My prayers is with the medical students. Loosing MDCN accreditation isn't funny at all.

What is the genesis of IMSUTH crisis? The Government got a report on lack of seriousness on part of hospital workers after agreement on increased pay. The deputy Governor had to pay an unscheduled visit to the Hospital only to discover that many workers were absent and did an instant row call after which he declared that those absent would be queried and sacked.

http://m.thenigerianvoice.com/news/182881/1/imo-deputy-governor-paid-unscheduled-visit-to-imo-.html

Imo Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere, yesterday
paid unscheduled visit to Imo State Teaching Hospital,
Orlu, saying it was in concert with the Rescue Mission
resolve to transform the health sector.
Prince Madumere who arrived the IMSUTH complex at 9:21
am, was shocked that some of the management staff were
not available except the Chief Security Officer, Mr.
Nwanguma Michael who conducted him round before the
arrival of others.
While addressing the staff, he said the staff on-the-spot
check was in a bid to ascertain the punctuality of the
employees and the quality of services being rendered to the
patients.
He also revealed he was directed to go on fact finding on
the state of the facilities of the government owned health
centers and hospitals.
Prince Madumere however warned that the government will
no longer watch medical employees shortchange Imolites in
the rendering the necessary health services according to
the medical ethics and professionalism.
He further explained that Owelle Rochas Okorocha led
Rescue Mission government is in the know of the
challenges being experienced in some of the health
centers. He therefore assured the staff of governments
poise to go the extra mile to ensure Imo people get
intensive health care they deserved.
Fielding questions from the residents of Umuna Community
who expressed dissatisfaction over the poor quality
services and regular absence of Doctors at the IMSUTH, he
assured them government’s effort to change the psyche of
the health workers. He told them to be rest assured that
positive change will be effected in few days. He revealed
that Government is ready to wield the big stick to erring
staff.
He enjoined the people to follow the footsteps of the two
persons who laid complaints over their dissatisfaction. He
said Rescue Mission government was founded on freedom
and therefore enjoined the people to join hands to build Imo
of collective dream by demanding their rights and reporting
their reservations to appropriate quarters.
In the same vein, Prince Eze Madumere visited IMSUTH
Comprehensive Center, Anara, Isiala Mbano and another
outreach in Ogbaku unannounced. He expressed gladness
over the comportment of the staff especially the Medical
Doctors, Dr. Durueke and Nkem Echefu heading the
respective outreaches. He also encouraged them to ensure
they remain noble in their work
.
At Anara, Isiala Mbano, Prince Madumere also called on the
CGC administrators to also take responsibility to ensure
they play the needed role to secure structures and take
them as their own.
The Heads of the two satellite IMSUTH health centers urged
the government to construct a perimeters fence around
their hospital facilities and to give them sense of security.
They all promise to do their best to satisfy their patients
who are the reason for their line of profession and
employment.

Fear grips IMSUTH Staff over
sack threat …as Govt releases
241 names for Query
Posted by The Leader News Online on Saturday, July 25,

The staff of Imo State University Teaching Hospital Orlu
was on Monday thrown into pandemonium following the
release of over 241 names of the workers in the hospital
who will undergo query with reason of being absent on their
duty post. When The Leader visited the hospital, some of
the staff were seen loitering in state of confusion within the
premises of the hospital, while some were busy with their
over side function.

One of the senior staff in the hospital (name withheld) told
The Leader that the staff did not actually know the cause of
such development, but recalled that the Deputy Governor,
Prince Eze Madumere recently paid an unscheduled visit to
the hospital at about 9:15 am in the morning and ordered
that attendance should be taken when most of the staff
have not come to work, while some were already at their
designated places of work. The staff further stated that he
was among those present on that very day but was
surprised to see his name on the said list.

I feel Government should negotiate with lsbour instead of trying to muscle their way out of pride. The students are the grasses while Government and labour are the elephants.

I still advocate that anyone who voted or worked for the re-election of Rochas should be brought monthly before their community square and given 24 strokes of every new month till the end of his tenure.
Atleast, that will come close to measuring up with the level of suffering they have put their people into.

So because of that no patient or learning for 6 months? Why don't you add the backlog of unpaid salaries or arrears? How can you work on an empty stomach. Are you not aware of the special formula of salary payment : work for 6 months and get paid for 3 months plus deductions. Even their consultants are now on strike for lack of pay.

Have you read my view? The workers and Government should reconcile their differences for the sake of students. Thats my view. It is more or less an ego war. Government has refused to pay them for not working while they in turn refused to work until they are paid. What is your suggestion?

Genesis of IMSUTH Orlu crisis:
1; many of the staff have not been paid salaries for months.

2;,Since Okorocha came to office, the road to IMSUTH has remained nearly non-practicable.

3; Okorocha pickets and marginalized the institution as he built in Owerri many of the facilities that should have been built at IMSUTH Orlu to expand the institution. Such facilities Okorocha built in Owerri include Ochiedike Kidney centre and others too many to mention here.

4; But for Prof. Awuzie who was recently removed from office as VC, who insisted on making IMSUTH functional, IMSUTH would have been decayed by now, as Okorocha pays lip service to the institution, or outright disdain for it. Example, Okorocha had an accident in 2012 very close to IMSUTH but chose to be attended to by a church hospital in Umuowa further away from IMSUTH than the scene of the accident.

5; Okorocha has a huge disdain for anything Orlu. The same grudge that prompted Okorocha to dismantle a newly-built sports stadium in Orlu, scrap the roads in the town, depopulate the town since 2011, is the same grudge behind the present uprising at IMSUTH.

Okorocha does not seem to understand that this is a democracy and public opinion swings, he may wake up one day to observe that it's all over - he is no longer the governor of Imo state.
