Are There Vegans/ Vegetarians In The House?? Lets Meet Here!! by bokom(m): 5:22pm On Oct 16, 2015
I have been a vegan now for almost 5 years! I am from Nigeria but I started this life style while I was in Europe. Been in this direction have helped improve my health in ways you cannot imagine. I follow this life style for 2 reasons... For health and also for moral reasons, because I have so much love for Animals .
Recently I came back to Nigeria and I found out that there are no Nigerian vegans/ vegetarians t all! Nigeria is so addicted to meats that everyone looks at me as been abnormal when I order my food without meat. One guy even told me that he gladly date me if I was a babe because I will be very cheap to take out for a date....lol anyway, I am so sorry to say that Nigerians are still backwards when it comes to eating healthy, like more fruits, vegetables and herbs and this is why we hardly see old people anymore in Nigeria. A 50 year old man in Nigeria, in most villages are the oldest in the family. So can someone prove me wrong that I am the only vegan in Naija! Please identify with me here if you are one! Thanks

Being a vegan, must your diet be limited to fruits and vegetables only? I wish to be a vegan but I need more foods added to vegetables and fruits. If you have an idea of other 'Nigerian Foods' pls share. Thanks

Being a vegan or vegetarian doesn't mean you eat only fruits and vegetables... it simply means you remove all animal products and dairy from your menu, like all types of meat, fish, milk eggs, cheese etc. You can still eat your rice, beans, garri, yam, plantain but cook them without meat and fish. But you introduce lots of fruits and vegetables on the menu. Noticed most Nigerians do not really spend their money to buy fruits... they would rather buy a plate of fired rice and chicken than a bunch of banana or pineapple..

Really bad! very bad!! population of almost 200 million people and no vegetarian!! i weep for my dear country naija! The men are all dieing with one sickness or the other at 45 years and the ladies, are getting fat and getting cancer! We are way backward and all suffering for our bad addictions!
Nigerians really education, because i see everybody is really ignorant about how to stay and live healthy! An average rich Nigerian couple believes that 5 big pieces of meat in their soup or rice is a sign of being rich! cry... Its only the bad trends we learn faster in naija...

Nice to know that you are a vegetarian but i cannot see reason(s) to why you are castigating folks that enjoy eating animal products. You choose to be a vegetarian good for you. Moreover i have come across quite a handful of vegans and i must confess that they look quite lethargic and scrawny.
I tried going for a month without consuming animal products but i just knew that this what not meant for me, that is not to say i overindulge. I consume any healthy kind of food in moderate proportions. I love fruits and vegetables to pieces and lastly i exercise like no man's bizness.

I am not trying to judge no one, but its quite sad that a country of almost 200 million population cannot boast of 10, 000 vegetarians undecided, that goes a long way to show us that Nigeria is still far way behind! For the records, Animal products is very very acidic and our body is not meant to digest meat naturally... We are more like Monkeys or chimpanzee, which do not eat any form of animal at all and yet they are so strong and big! Why do you think, wild animals do not have same kind of sicknesses man has? have you ever thought why we have cancer, diabetes, ulcer, kidney failure, heart attack you think the are natural sickness? No, these sickness came as a result of what we eat! We are no more living the way nature designed us to live! rather we feed ourselves with poisons because of our addictions!... I once told a friend that its easier for a cocaine addict to stop taking drugs than a normal Nigerian to stop eating Meat, fish eggs etc.... tongue

I believe 90% of vegetarians are forced to be one because of their health issues. So I think you have no right to criticise those who eat meat or animals by-products. I also guess you felt so bad when you were told to let go of meat.

Meat has its ups and downs. Eating appropriately is the key. Moderation is vital. There are percentages of all substitutes of food needed in the body to make a balanced diet. Meat is a good source of protein.

There is a great feeling when you have meat to battle after, during or full meat as a meal. Meat is not that bad if you are healthy and eat properly. Mushrooms help you guys substitute for meat which is so good. God considered you before He created mushrooms.

For those who voluntarily left meats for only vegs then thumbs up. But for those who did for health reasons may God heal you and give you joy and strength to continue.

Just don't criticise meat-eaters so as to justify full vegetable diets.

Thanks.

God help my health so I can have my meats when I need them. Imagine me shunning pepper soup or suya or Afang with cow tail? God please ooooooo

Just like the way a cocaine addict will find a million reasons to justify his addiction, same way meat eaters are looking for silly excuses to feed their addiction! I don't expect 20 % of Nigerians to be vegetarians, but come on, I can't even find one person on nairaland! This tells me a lot! Why do you think the whites are better than us? Because the are very open minded more exposed and educated. It's really a silly excuse that you can't eat healthy because of your stupid addiction to suya, pepper soup and nkwobi.... very lame. Look at how Nigerians die at early age of 40 - 50, and in western world's you see grannies of 85 years getting married again. An average rich onitsha business man in Naija do not even know what it means to a vacation for 2 weeks and rest the body or an average house wife to know the benefits of exercise... Naija I weep for thee!!!!!

Dude, you're sounding really bitter, lemme guess, do you miss eating meat?? Are you insinuating that all grannies "abroad" in their 80's are veggies, and all those that die young are non veggies?? Let's bring it home, most of the people that die prematurely, die because they're are non veggies?? Take you campaign to the streets if you need a partner, not everyone in Nigeria has an account on NL.

I am so sorry to say that Nigerians are still backwards when it comes to eating healthy

undecided If you are really 40, how can you make such a crass statement? How many Nigerians have you met? I know one or two veggies restaurant in Lagos. I have seen a thread for veggies on Nairaland, who knows if it got wiped out in the tsunami. Yes, there might be a lower percentage of vegans but there is a higher percentage of people trying to eat Nigerian food healthily. After all, the whites still take their steaks, hotdogs and burgers

Hey! I'm vegan too, living in Nigeria! I think there are more of us than it seems, just hard to come across. And it's really easy to be vegan in Nigeria, most of our food you can prepare without any animal products.

We are not lions. If you think you're like a lion, go and catch and animal, tear it's flesh apart with your bare hands then sink your teeth into its raw flesh (if you can), the way lion does. Lol, lion indeed.

If you feel castigated perhaps it's because you are causing the pain and suffering of innocent animals for no reason other than the taste. Maybe, deep down you are ashamed of that.

White people didn't invent plant-based lifestyles though. In Ancient Egypt most of the people lived, mainly, on grains. The Mayans and other ancient Amerindians ate mostly plants. It even makes more sense for us in a tropical climate, where plant foods grow all year round, to be vegan! I wonder why people oppose it so much smh

Bt early men lived longer than us and they eat lot of meats.eating meat doesn't mean u wont live long bt its because the way most pple preserve meat for consumption is dangerous.processed meat and even processed vegetables are the major causes of cancer.one doesn't need to avoid meat just get it from a good source or u can even rear them by urself.lean meat like grass fed beef is good for dieters but if u still have second thoughts abt eating meats you can eat vegetables but make sure you get it from a good source because most pple use chemicals to make it look enticing

Humans are herbivores; creatures that function best on a plant-based diet.

Can you please state better reasons than the "pain and suffering of animals"? That line is getting stale.

No one placed a gun on your head to accept the lifestyle.

But hold on, are you a vegan or a vegetarian??

I am a vegan. You really need a "reason" to stop paying people to torture and kill animals so that you can enjoy the taste of their flesh and by-products? What would be my "reason" for not randomly punching you in the face if I see you? Hmmm, maybe the common sense and decency of not causing harm to others when you don't have to.
You are right, no one placed a gun on my head. I had the intelligence and decency to consider, when the facts where placed before me, the harm that meat eating among humans is causing to our health, the planet and the animals. No gun was placed on my head, but everyday in slaughter houses all over the world, stun guns are placed on animals heads while they consciously struggle and are bled alive. Every day, children in developing countries (such as ours) starve or go hungry while large amounts of grain that could feed them is being used for animal feed. Everyday more of the world's rainforest is being destroyed to make room for animal farming to meet the growing demand for meat from the world's growing population. Everyday, the world's oceans are becoming more and more destroyed and depleating due, mostly, to over fishing. No one placed a gun on my head, I just wasn't afraid to accept the truth when I was faced with it.

I think the animals that eat other animals raw need this sermon, not a human.

And this you wrote up there isn't a reason, no matter how long it is.

The plants you have access to, animals were killed, so that they can be harvested. Haven't you thought about that yet?? Do plants feel pain or not?? Are they not "living things"? If plants could make noise, I'm sure they'll be protesting by now!!
