Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Each person has their own view of what is ugly or beautiful. There are those who'll say a woman is beautiful simply because she's light-skinned and others who'll say she's beautiful because her body and or face is shaped in a particular way. There are also those who'll find beauty in the face of a woman who looks like their beloved mother, favorite sister or granny who brought them up. It's quite complicated. How can one woman know that all Nigerian woman are ugly. How many did she see in her lifetime? Did she see the tall, light-skinned and slim Fulani woman who visited my aunt in Ibhadan in 1976 or the ones I went to school with in Mubi or the ones I go to church with here in SA? Of course not. I think what she's saying is informed by her anger over something someone did to her. She's hurting. I was watching a Nollywood movie the other day with my mom. Like from nowhere, she said, "Son, have you noticed that these people look just like us?" The fact is, there are as many ugly looking Nigerians as there are South Africans. There's also a possibility that you have many more than us because you are more than us population wise. My own view, after many years of life in different countries, is that every woman is beautiful in her own way and the color of their skin doesn't matter. A woman can be stunningly beautiful even if she's very dark in complexion. My compatriot who says Nigerian women are ugly would not count among the women I find beautiful but I know there are men who believe she's the prettiest thing that ever walked on Mother Earth. That's their choice. They have a right to it.
