The OP was in the US, he could have used a vulnerable POS, he could have used his card on vulnerable or hacked online stores, someone in Nigeria could have leaked his details..

In conclusion, don't conclude anything until you have full information. If you continue at this pace, you'll get into trouble for something you have no clue about

No insurance on that ATM account and that is a shame. How in the whole wide world would you opt for something like that without having insurance company to back it up. You are to blame for not asking when processing it not first bank, a useless institution that is very vulnerable in their primitive banking system.

My is AKINOLA GBENGA ,I reside in Lagos Nigeria, I came to United States for Holiday.

My ATM Master Card with 1st Bank [ FIRSTCASH ] number 5399 2320 5893 xxxx valid thru 12/17 was compromised in NEW YORK and while i was in ATLANTA GEORGIA ,on Tuesday 05/05/20015 which i received an ALERT that i made use of my MASTER CARD which i did not and I made a complain regarding this issue so that my Master Card should be BLOCKED.

The TOTAL money that was remove from my MASTER CARD was #421,341.9 [$2,000 plus] with reference /
MAY-2015 14:02:20 [ 9AM Atlanta time ] By FBN/BEST BUY 00010280/ NEW YORK/NY/U. BAL NGN 153,285.61CR

My Master Card was debited Twice ... I called BEST BUY company about this incident that my MASTER CARD has been COMPROMISED and i was told to contact my Financial Institution.I came back to Nigeria on June 2015 and whereby i have contacted my 1st Bank branch and i was told that the Merchant company decline from refunding money that was compromised from my Account through my ATM card and I was told in my branch that [ 1st Bank ]will not do anything to the money stolen.

Please house i need your help on how to go about to recovery of my stolen money, from 1ST Bank of Nigeria.

First of all,make sure your financial institution have cancelled the compromised card.Otherwise, you will have more fraudulent charges coming in.

I am not familiar with the Nigerian banking regulations.However,there are some actions you suppose to take on discovery of the fraud before leaving the States e.g obtaining a police report etc this will help back your claim up with FBN.It sounds like your Mastercard was cloned.

Personally, I think you stand a better chance with BestBuy and the other merchant on getting restitution,than with FBN, strangely as it may seem

I am willing to devote time to help you recover your lost money.I also think there is a potential to identify whoever was responsible for cloning your card if you utilize the data at your disposal properly.

I know people who have been here a couple of times who have had money taken out from their Nigerian accounts without their knowledge.

Most times the fault is from the card holders. For example

1. OP instead of posting the first 6 and last 4 digits of card rather decided to bloat out the last 4 digits alone forgetting that it would be easier for some cyber rogue to figure that out. Mind you most Nigerian banks thesedays replicate the PAN on card expiration and only updates the expiration dates.

2. OP's laptop has numerous pirated stuff or has visited pirate sites in the past in search of free movie downloads. Those movie sites though free are costly in the aftermath.

Let me give you an example here, you go eat in a restaurant somewhere in Europe or America, you make payment with your card for $50 but it was never deducted from your account as expected even for months.

Then all of a sudden you started getting alerts on your account more this later despite having not used the card in recent times and still the $50 payment had not reflected.

What has happened here is that your card details was harvested for its value and not for payment of services rendered.

Same thing happens when you download the latest movies from those sites, keyloggers are installed on your browser to store your card details and send to the movie site owners for future use whenever you go online shopping.

3. Not discounting our local banks staff though. Recently I got a call from my bank from a staff I never knew telling me I need to update my account details. An account I've done my BVN linkage.

Staff said my account was being upgraded and I need to fill out a form else I can't access my funds.

I tried as much as I could to get to the nearest bank branch and did as directed but staff still insisted I fill out an account opening form.

I crase for am dat day after I discovered my funds were being moved to a suspense account and back again. He let me be and there's been peace since then.

Staff wanted to use my funds to meet his target I guess and tried getting me open a fresh account.

It is staff like this that clone people's cards or create cards for accounts without one. Always have a number tied to the account for alerts.

4. Using your EMV chip based cards in the US or elsewhere is not safe. In fact Nigeria's card based infrastructure is more upto date compared to the US and others still using Magstripe technology.

Reason being that it's too expensive for them to carry out the much needed infrastructral changes to migrate the cards.

Therefore it's easier for some bar attendants to clone your cards for other use.

people need to wise up....it is advicable to have a concrete plan while going abroad....first tip is to disable online purchase or reduce daily limit on all transactions..you can do that on internet banking or at the ATM. Secondly reduce your daily limit of cash withdrawal....POS purchases....transfer limit.....2000 usd (200,000 naira )of POS purchase in a day is way too high

It's first bank that should handle this, if they say the merchant refused to refund, then ask them for the proof of response from the merchant then contact Best Buy.... Plus did you call First Bank immediately this happened?

There are new Chips being used on all Credit Cards and Debit Cards in US now to safeguide against someone hacking your information. I experienced the same thing in Zurich several years ago with my American Express Card and I complained and my money was refunded after investigation. Hopefully, he will get reimbursed by First Bank but I won't hold my breadth.

First bank is not liable for the fraud perpetrated in your account, cos I believe you compromised your pin or your pan number or cvv2 number unknown to a third party, which makes the bank unliable, cos during the time you filled the form when applying for the card, you had carefully gone through the terms and conditions of the card before appending your signature , you would have noticed a portion of the form where you indemnify the bank against any loss due to neglignece on compromise of your card details. Am sorry for your loss, but there is still room for more investigation if you can follow up by still calling firstcontact, or on the bank facebook and twitter handle, I bet you there will be a quick response cos no bank needs litigation or goodwill.

First bank should be liable for this stolen fund....if it was a USA bank that issued the card, I know your charge back would have gone smoothly. Everything with Nigeria is headache. If the merchant didn't want to release easily, first bank can file a case against it.

. This post of yours just lacks substance. Do you understand how liability draws? On what basis are u ascribing liability to firstbank? To make matters worse you are decieving urslf that if it were a US bank it would v been different...you will continue to be slave to the western world. If you do not understand processes,seek clarification rather than display crass ignorance. Were there is a password compromise the issuing bank is not liable even if ur account is swept to the last naira...compare the card pan with that on the debit narration on ur statement,if there are same then there is nothing anyone can do for you and if u waste your money seeking redress in court then you will be double shocked. OP do your home work first before you make a wrong decision and seek opinion from better sources before peole will ill-advice u.if it was a case of issuing a card on ur acct to someone else then you have a case, otherwise hmmm.

Did you request for the debit card to enabled for magstripe transactions? Note that US transaction ride on magstripe technology (which is susceptible to Fraud) as against chip&pin which is applicable in Nigeria.

If yes. There's a liability shift to the cardholder as directed by CBN once it's confirmed that the cardholder asked for magstripe functionality to be enabled on the debit card

I had the same issue 2wEeks ago,my GTB mastercard was being used in the UK.I got several debit alerts and immediately Calle my bank account block t card! The next day,i went to complain about was given a form. Till now I am yet to get a reversal,although I am lucky the fund is still in my ledger account.
You should have contacted your bank immediately or within 48hrs..i believe my money would be refunded,sorry about your loss.

Pls Stop using your card on websites that DONT have the Key(lock)icon...I am an online shopper,I shopped on the "Cloned Amazon site few week before my card was hacked reason for the ordeal...I am more careful now
