SirShymexx:It is not as simple as that. Politics plays a huge part in the underdevelopment of the SW. Post military rule, i.e 1999 onwards, Nigerian politics was highly unevolved and rudimentarily ineffective because it was entirely about rapacious greed and self-aggrandizement of a few. from 1999 looting to performance ratio was probably 70:30. I.e political leaders steal 70% of what is available and fund States with the rest. This happened uniformly across the SW because democracy was in its infancy and elections were never free or fair. Instead elections were "do or die" affairs where 'strong men' , often those who controlled the thugs and patronage system, rigged themselves into power continuously, against the will of the people, to create and maintain a system that systematically and cynically cornered the wealth of a nation for a few. Things are now evolving because the Yorubas, as soon as elections became fairer, rejected the crooks, thugs and misrulers to pitch tent with leaders of proven ability. This has resulted in the gradual changes we are seeing today whereby the SW, in a cesspit of underdevelopment and politics of greed and corruption, is slowly becoming a well-led region where the ratio of looting to performance is probably around 40:60. As elections become fairer, leadership accountability improves and as democratic governance become more refined, and as Nigerians become more politically sophisticate enough to unemotionally vote out misrulers and demand more from leaders, then I feel the ratio will be 10:90 in the next ten years. Much of the underdevelopment you see is due to the wrong sort of people, whether Abacha or Gbenga Daniel, controlling very important political positions. Ultimately, the OP is a bigot and mischief-maker. We understand his 'mission' which is to belittle and discredit the Yoruba by ignorantly parading them as unproductive and "parasitic". The Yorubas responding here are simply dealing with him from that perspective. We are not saying the SW is now the USA or the UK but the point we are making is that, within the context of general mediocrity that is Nigeria, we hold our own and cannot, by any stretch of the wildest imagination, be viewed as a people whose worth to Nigeria can be doubted or discredited. |

Gbawe:Nice one Gbawe, |
| Re: What Does The South West Offer Nigeria by SirShymexx: 8:29pm On Oct 22, 2015 |
Gbawe:Personally, I just expected more. The whole thing reeks of celebrating mediocrity and non-achievement since all SWestern states (including Lagos) are just part of the systemic underdevelopment that has plagued Nigeria since independence. Anyway, folks should have ignored the thread if they knew the intention wasn't a pure one - rather than tout things that aren't really impressive. |

Hello Guys am thinking of undertaking an enumeration of Hawkers on all highways and roads in the southwest, south south and south east.please can you tell which region or state will come out tops with flying colours. ?Yeye no need we all know the answer. Be grateful to God for the southwest.85% of all your made men would always in their life be grateful go the south west. All your elite's will ever be grateful to the southwest, your aspiring youths will ever be grateful to the southwest, your ever growing unemployed and underemployed will ever be grateful to the Southwest,Your parents and elders in your various villages will ever be grateful to the Southwest for their survival due to the repatriation of funds.in fact Southwest keep your various villages and local economy running. SirShymexx:yes no doubt.but the southwest is gradually redefining it's self.Soon all this 2*2 shops will give way to shopping malls and online retail. This over time will erode the Igbo dominance of mid-level trade. The Yoruba are not making mouth. They are working towards it.In the next 5 years over 30more mega shopping malls is being planed for Lagos Alone by just one Mega store group,Other are already gearing up.Other parts of the SW is also moving in that direction.I feel for my SE guys . |

chrisblack:You know, these "mega stores" will drive out not only igbo retail traders but it will also affect yoruba traders as well. It is a two way thing. How will these stores benefit and empower we Yorubas economically? Will it be owned by the SW people? If yes, is it not the already rich that will own these mega malls? I will always be in support of any move or policy that will encourage the small and mid range Business to thrive (not that am against these mega malls) |

Johnnoah1st:In my own honest opinion, I feel we should be in control of our economy in yoruba land. Our means of production, distribution and services shouldn't be left in the hands of outsiders. |

chrisblack:market square and roban stores (even Peter Obi mall franchise among others) owned by igbos would be among that trade evolution you spoke of. Don't pity us, theirs a reason we dominate in the trade sector-for instance, in the last 2 years market square mall outlet has out built and competed favourably with brands like spa and shoprite in the Se and SS. Nice thread by the way |
