I have noticed that people with (yoruba father and Igbo mother) are always quick to tell you that they have an Igbo mother when you ask them about their identity. I have one of them as friend, he is working in warri. Don't know why they behave that way! 9 Likes |

Phunmibi: He has made a name for himself, but sorry to ask who are you?. Igbo producer brought him from obscurity to prominency, now he is a lawmaker in Lagos. You are here dragging nonsense. Don't blame Desmond abi Sola, but blame his father that gave away their tribal surname to answer Elliott. People like Kelvin Olusola is answering English first name but his surname gives us clue of where he comes from. I don't mind answering Duke Charles as a stage name just for firm. Desmond is wise Sha! Like Igbo boy. 5 Likes |

Onijagidijagan: You do know that the same Nollywood you mentioned is responsible for producing Igbo language movies right? Or is Yorubawood responsible for the creation of Igbo movies? Or is it Kannywood? What does that tell you? And since last year do you know that there has been a huge increase in the number of Igbo language movies produced by Nollywood? And also that there is an Igbo language channel, in addition to the English language channel that showcase English-speaking Igbo movies, on cable TV? So what is the issue? 5 Likes |

dukecharles: He is Igbo by maternal ancestry and a Nwadiana in Igboland. I'm pretty sure he has an Emeka or Ifeanyi as Igbo name somewhee. Igbos do not play with their nwadiana (a child or children born to their Igbo sisters). He also looks Igbo. 5 Likes 1 Share |

silverdam:Listen to yourself, you had the chance to use oluwatosin as your name on nairaland, but you 'proudly' used silverdam, now u spilling bunkum. In life we look for strategies that will enhance our chances, and that is exactly what Olusola did. So, swerve!!! 4 Likes |

Ugomba: I have one here in my office in the US, born to a Yoruba father and Igbo mother and she is so proud of her maternal ancestry. Physically, she looks very much Igbo. It also seems that non-Igbos born to Igbo mothers often tend to look more Igbo than their father's ancestry. Another example is Eberechi Yemi Alade, a half Igbo half Yoruba girl, who looks every inch Igbo. 4 Likes |

bigfrancis21: if there is an igbo channel, that's the igbowood you and I have been waiting for 4 so long, but d English Nollywood success stories comprises of all Nigerians actors and actresses. Same things is applicable to the super eagles, not that igbos have better players but is dominated as a result of d igbo coaches that we have been using for long time. so therefore we cannot call it biafran players. 2 Likes |

silverdam:why not use Oluwatosin as ur moniker ? Next time don't use silverdam but truthfully we always use a name to serve a purpose at a point in life and that's why some people pick nickname and u hardly know their real names. |
Re: Desmond Elliot: Why I Hid My Yoruba Identity From Nollywood by bigfrancis21: 4:36pm On Oct 23, 2015 |
Onijagidijagan: It cannot be called Biafran players because officially Biafra as a name does not exist. If Igbos were also known as Biafrans, not in reference to a country but as an alternative name, then it could be plausible to refer to Nigeria's football team as being mostly a Biafran team (in terms of an alternative name to 'Igbo' and not as a country). The Igbos, being accommodating of other tribes, accommodated talented non-Igbo actors and actresses and we all know that there are several non-Igbo actors, directors and actresses amongst the greater number of Igbo actors, actresses, producers and directors but that does not take away the fact that it is majorly and Igbo industry manned and run by Igbos in and out. 6 Likes |

bigfrancis21:in Nigeria, there is nothing like half igbo, Half yoruba. Any igbo that has lived in yorubaland 4 sometimes and knows the culture, are already becoming yorubas. Majorities of this igbo women u r talking about are more like Yorubas. Yoruba men doesn't go to the south east to date igbo women but date mostly igbo women born and raised in the South West or spent a long time here. 8 Likes |

Malawian: LOL. With the rate of inter-tribal marriages between Igbos and Yorubas, in the next 100 years it might start getting difficult to tell Yorubas from Igbos. Eberechi Alade was born in Abia state. Some of her songs tend to have strong Igbo flavour than Yoruba. You can read up more about her here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yemi_Alade 2 Likes |

Onijagidijagan: Desmond Elliot was proud enough to introduce himself as half Yoruba half Igbo. Same as Eberechi Yemi, Omawumi, Cynthia etc. Had they not told us, we would not know. Thus, children of inter-tribal marriages nowadays are beginning to claim both identities, even though Nigeria might be a paternalistic society. Being familiar with the Yoruba customs does not make them Yoruba. It makes them more accepting of Yorubas than those from the SE or SS because they are used to them. Since birth, you have been exposed to Western education and civilization however it would be wrong to refer to you as a westerner because clearly you are not. Being exposed to Western ways and customs does not make you a Westerner. It only makes you able to adapt easily in a Western society you find yourself in. 9 Likes |

bigfrancis21: Igbo are accomodating 4 where? in Lagos? u must be kidding me. for ur info, igbo people are not accommodating at all but that's not my point. My point is that, Yorubas created Nollywood it started as a yoruba film before it splited into Nollywood English/Yoruba Nollywood cinema.
