My name is Olasupo, it's not not even a popular Yoruba name, but I cannot change it for anything in this world - I have English and other names, but no name makes more meaning to me than my Yoruba name, all my children's first name must be a Yoruba name I'm not condemning Desmond Eliot, I understand where he's coming from, he's not totally a Yoruba - I'm 100% Yoruba and proud. 1 Like |

bigfrancis21: I don't know how else to say this without sounding caustic, but seriously I'm convinced you're hopelessly retar.ded. I just schooled your punk a$$ about the real crux of the subject matter, yet you keep harping on this same shyt. Ilorins don't and have never denied their Yoruba roots, even if they're intermixed with the Fulanis, they have never come out collectively as a people/group to repudiate/deny their Yoruba roots as many Igbos clearly have. I understand that mysery loves company but seriously you are flogging a dead horse coz our race isn't as loathed as yours, not even close. And I really don't give a flying Bleep about who wrote the article -- for all I know it could even be one of your mischevious and cowardly igbo clansmen spewing your usual trash. Bottomline is that you all are the ones with the identity crises issues. #FACT. |

Onijagidijagan: Lies made up to feel good about themselves. The very same Yorubas that till today cannot say where Oduduwa came from. Even in our modern age and time of enlightement they still peddle lies around that he fell from the the sky. Science has proven that it is physically impossible for anyone to fall from anywhere, not especially from the sky. Meanwhile, the Binis say that Oduduwa was their very own son, Ekaladerhan, which the Yorubas corrupted to Oduduwa, who escaped Bini land and wandered into ancient Yoruba territory, the Yorubas seeing him and who love to ascribe any little physical phenomenon to some celestial wonder, welcomed him and regarded him as a god. Nowadays, they now claim he fell from the sky. The same Binis were to conquer Lagos, Yoruba land, centuries after to reign over Yorubas. For what I know, the Yoruba mythological creation story is incomplete. The Bini version is complete and logically makes more sense. I prefer the Bini version of Oduduwa to that of the Yorubas. 3 Likes |

bigfrancis21: Smh. Bukola Saraki has the right to keep his ancestry alive. . He has fulani ancestry so what? At least he knows where his family came from and doesn't claim middle-east. Ijebu don't deny being yoruba, the current Awujale only claims his blood line is from sudan....nobody knows where he got that from cus known before ever doubted Ile-Ife. Btw Ijebu has been in existence before Awujale title And somehow this Ijebu - Sudan claim only exist on mischievous Internet articles Egun might not be yoruba linguistically but socio- culturally they are... even today they speak yoruba as well as Egun There are Ijaw tribes in Ondo state so what are you saying? 1 Like |

OkutaNla:O Yes denial still happens in Ikaland but they still know they are Igbo. You can analyse Oliseh's denial statement even when he was not asked. It tells a lot. For the Dein his father's name was Chukwuma a very popular Igbo name among the Aniomas. He might want to cover up for his personal reasons but he knows the truth. His own name is Ikechukwu. Mark this: the day Ndigbo get their sovereignty or a strong political power you will hear a lot of stories that can crash a website. Lol 2 Likes |

Well,it's a pity we all are arguing about the origin of nollywood because of tribalism i guess. Come on, Nollywood was only created in 1992 through Living in Bondage. Give credit to Igbo people for once! Anyway,i also noticed that people with Igbo mothers and Yoruba fathers tend to scream about their Igbo heritage. People like Segun Arinze, Desmond Elliot and Yemi Alade. Look at Don Jazzy for example, he is more or less comfortable and proud of his Igbo side. Away from the limelight,i 've also come across people that are partly igbo but you will think they are full igbo. Even David Oyelowo is part Igbo! Proudly Igbo. Desmond i wu nwa nwa, nothing do you. 5 Likes |

macof: True. I wonder if he ever reads the links he posts or understands the contents. The same way he threw in a link comparing Igbo ans Brazlian culture and passing it off as the contribution of Igbo to Brazilian culture on a Yoruba/Brazil thread and Wulfruna had to call him out on it. The link he had up in his post clearly tips Afolayan as a man wanting to break new grounds and start a new path for Nollywood in comparison to cheaply made movies without scripts slapped on vcds and sold in traffics (sheetbo films). The post also remembered to mention the pirates at Alaba who kill profits for hardworking folks like Afolayan. Dude should not be taken serious, ko mo nkan kan, all na emotion to defend sheetbo for am. 1 Like 1 Share |

I.d!ots are all over the thread trying so hard to peg the credit of Nollywood to the ethnic group of their choice. Let us get something clear on what Nollywood movie actually is. Nollywood movie is any Nigerian movie in which the actors use English as a medium of expression regardless of the cultural background used or ethnic background of the acts. From the above definition, Nollywood cannot be pegged to any ethnic group, it becomes 'Nigerian' as a result of the use of English which by implication makes gives the movie a wider audience base within and outside Nigeria - this has a direct impact on sales. However, there are Yorubawood movies, Igbowood movies and Hausawood movies. All targeted at particular audiences which in turn affects sales. My take: Pegging Nollywood (English based movies regardless of where acts are from or culture used) to Ibo is not only silly but calls the intelligence of such thinkers into question. If ethnic based movies are to be compared then we could look at ibo movies where ibo is spoken, Yoruba movies where Yoruba is spoken and Hausa movies where Hausa is spoken - throughout. 1 Like 1 Share |

bigfrancis21: Ok. This will be my last exchange with you coz it's obvious you're not worth the stress. I actually doubt the writer is a true Yorubaman simply coz no true Yorubaman would ever even remotely suggest that the Emir of Ilorin is a Yorubaman in the first place -- it's a no-brainer really. And as for you, you are just pained that your dirty linen is out there in the public, everyone and their mom knows you all are rejects. |

Iyoma2: His ancestry is quite complicated, ever more so that of his children having Sierra Leonean, Igbo, Akwa Ibom and Yoruba ancestries. Desmond's paternal ancestor was a slave returnee who had originally returned to Sierra Leone before finally returning to Nigeria. This happening in the 1800s. This explains his English last name, Elliot. He settled in Lagos state. Several ex slaves of Yoruba ancestry returned to Nigeria on abolishment of the slave trade. Example of another slave returnee family in Yoruba land is the Ransome-Kuti family. Also, some of these returnees, those from Latin America especially, returned with Portuguese names. 2 Likes |

Some arguments are baffling and well connected to tribalism and hatred. Before the early 90s,there was nothing like nollywood, people just made films and series on celluloid tapes and showcased them in Cinema/theatre houses. The release of Living in Bondage, an Igbo language movie on VHS tapes by two Igbo film makers started what we call the Nigerian movie industry by extention the Nollywood film industry. These producers continued to make Igbo movies which crossed all Linguistic and geographical boundaries till sometime in 1995 or so when they decided to make movies in English language to accomodate other ethnicities. Because of this change, we had movies in English language like Domitila and glamour girls etc. The change from Igbo to English was fully embraced by actors, actrresses, directors and film producers from diverse Nigerian ethnicities. It was around this period that we had non Igbo producers like Tarila Thompson, Teco Benson and the Amata brothers. Fast forward to 2015, the Original Igbo language movie industry has accomodated every other non Igbo movie maker and actors. The greatest mistake of Igbo people in Nollywood is that they stopped making Igbo movies, crossed over and accomodated other people. That is why some of you have the mind to counter facts. Facts that have been documented and stamped in the annals of history. Sorry, Try again! 6 Likes |

As usual, the thread has turned into tribal bashings...Anywho, I was about to write a long missive about the Hollywood equivalent of the history of using a more marketable name as a stage name, but I don't have energy for that. Instead, just look at the real names of these actors: Kirk Douglas (Issur Danielovitch), Rock Hudson (Roy Harold Scherer, Jr.), Marilyn Monroe (Norma Jean Baker), Martin Sheen (Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez), Jamie Foxx (Eric Marlon Bishop), Lauren Bacall (Betty Joan Perske) and Anna Kashfi* (Joan O'Callaghan). He isn't the first person to hide his ethnicity for the advancement of his career, and he certainly won't be the last... *that chic was a special case, she really wanted to be seen as exotic, so she claimed to be half Indian. She was indeed born in British India...to two very very white parents. Maybe that's where Rachel Dolezal got her inspiration from... 1 Like |
