"About eighty or ninety years ago, an Ibo chief settled with his slaves on the Bonny river. This Opubo, or Obullo, the " Great Man," was grandfather of the present chief : his son took the name of Pepper (Pepple), which he now spells with a change, and married a woman from the Abilli (Billa) country, west of the New Calabar river. https://books.google.com.ng/books?id=UVl6FNYJ1KkC&pg=PA271&hl=en&redir_esc=y |

http://www.riversstate.gov.ng/item/1117-chairmen-set-to-develop-ibani-language-curriculum.html He opined that what it takes to preserve a language include to teach it in schools, printing appropriate literature books, and promoting its use publicly and privately. In his lecture, Amasenibo Eric G. Jumbo listed out the current threat to Ibani Language which include Commerce and Christian Religion. Also speaking, Warisenibo Abinye Morgan Ogolo, challenged the people of Bonny and Opobo Kingdoms to make concerted efforts to stop speaking Ibo language. This will help to rediscover Ibani Language so that it will take its rightful place despite the damage it has suffered over the years. The Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro L G A, represented by the Council Secretary, Mr. Sunny J. Pepple, called on volunteer experts of the Ibani language to partner with the Council to revive the language. 1 Like |

An attempt by NLNG to Ibanise Bonny people in 2002 failed simply because their language is/was never Ibani (spoken simply by a very few) but Ubani Igbo (not just any Igbo dialect) which goes with the fact that the actual name of Bonny is Ubani. When asked why they don’t speak Ibani, their reply is always “Nnem ezim, Nnam ezim”, meaning my mother did not teach me, my father did not teach me. The truth is that their parents never spoke Ibani, so how could they teach their kids what their great great grand fathers never spoke? 20 Likes |

Maxi112: Therein lies the problem. Why are they (and you inclusive) so unwilling to admit it if so? You all are making the igbos appear desperate to claim you. If according to you the town is Ibo, what could be so wrong in simply admitting it for the record? Anyway, personally I feel igbos trying to reinforce ties with the Opobos are fighting a losing battle for as long as the settlers or residents of the island keep denouncing/denying their igbo roots. Good luck to y'all. 2 Likes |

Maxi112: It is for posterity my dear. You will need it one day especially with the ever expansionist Ijaw in close proximity. One day you shall realize that you are better off with the majority where you rightfully belong than a minority in a dubious country. Same goes for the Ikwerre. Mind you, we all answered names of our sub-groups e.g (Ngwa, Onitcha, Izuogu etc) before a unifying name IGBO was used to identify us as people who could understand 80% of each others language. 16 Likes |
