Anenih linked to newly registered PDM •Atiku also involved despite public denial

Acclaimed “Mr. Fix It” of Nigerian politics, Chief Tony Anenih, has a hand in the revival of the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), whose registration as a political party was confirmed yesterday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), News Express can reveal this morning.

Investigations by News Express showed that Anenih, the incumbent Board of Trustees Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was one of the party’s chieftains who attended the August 29, 2012 Rejuvenation Meeting of the PDM held at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, the Nigerian capital. Other PDP heavyweights who graced that meeting attended by delegates from all the 36 states of the federation and Abuja included Alhaji Lawal Kaita and Ambassador Yahaya Kwande.

When Anenih’s presence at the meeting was about to become an issue, the old fox convinced the party’s leadership that there was nothing to fear as there was no plan by the PDM, one of the main component units of the PDP, to break away.

It was as a result of this that the then PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, stoutly defended Anenih’s presence at the PDM meeting, quoting Anenih as saying that he was there to re-emphasise the oneness of the PDP as a political party. “I have it on good authority that he told them that we don’t have division within the party,” Metuh had said.

Also, contrary to his claims not to have anything to do with the new party, News Express can confirm that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is very much involved in the PDM. Addressing delegates at the August 29, 2012 Rejuvenation Meeting, Alhaji Lawal Kaita had told them that Atiku could not make it to the meeting due to cold. Atiku, through Kaita, apologised for his absence and pledged his unalloyed commitment to the group.

Founded by the late General Shehu Yar’Adua, “the PDM structure,” according to media consultant Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, “was instrumental to the emergence of the late Chief M.K.O Abiola as the flagbearer of the SDP (Social Democratic party). The late Abiola went on to contest the June 12, 1993 presidential election and was coasting home to victory until the election was annulled by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.

“By then, the influence of the PDM had become very visible for any student of the politics and power not to note. His political structure (the PDM) was reputed to have provided the platform upon which former President Olusegun Obasanjo rode to power in 1999. Indeed, most of the leading members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at inception were leading members of the PDM.”

The new PDM is chaired by Chief Bode. Alhaji Inuwa Baba, former Chief Protocol Officer under President Olusegun Obasanjo and late Shehu Musa Yar’Adua administrations, is also said to have worked behind the scenes to ensure PDM’s revival and registration as a political party.

Is this a case of "Messi" being mesmerised?
What odds would the betting pundits on Nairaland place on the trickster being out-tricked in this play of larger theatrical proportions?

I ask because back in December of last year, the vanguard newspaper ran with the following headline:Atiku: Anenih denies PDM Elders’ C’ttee. Even more interesting is the fact that the newexpress report (copied in above) mentions an earlier meeting in August of the same year.

ABUJA— FORMER Chairman, Board of Trustees of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Tony Anenih, yesterday, drew the line in his support for the 2015 presidential aspiration of former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar.

In a statement in Abuja, Anenih dissociated himself from an Elders Committee of the Peoples Democratic Movement, a political platform that is largely connected to Atiku’s 2015 presidential ambition.

The statement followed news report, yesterday, that Anenih had been appointed as Chairman of the Elders Committee of the group.

Now fast forward to June of this year and what do we have but No war with Anenih – Tukur

In a statement issued yesterday and signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Prince Oliver Okpala, Tukur said the insinuation that there is a rift between himself and Anenih is the handiwork of those who do not mean well for the party.

He said himself and the BoT chairman are founding members of the PDP who are working collectively and harmoniously for the overall interest of the party and the country.

While it is difficult to make out where this one is headed, anything that weakens the continued dominance of the ruling party certainly calls for celebration cheesy

The first past the post democracy we have in Naija is going to inevitably result in a two party system like in America.

Which two parties...who knows? There were many parties in the early days of the US. It took a hundred years for them to distill down to Republican and Democrat.

I think PDM is part of PDP. They want to create a structure that is also strong in the North to reduce Buhari's votes. They did the same when they sponsored Fasheun to revive the old UPN. I guess Fasheun is just smiling tot he bank now.

PDP cannot deceive us. They have no plan for Nigeria except to remain in power and hand over to their children. PDP and PDM will fail. They couldn't even come up with another acronym - like papa (PDP) like son (PDM).

Breaking News: PDM launches offensive, unfolds Mission Statement

Less than 24 hours after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced its registration as a political party, the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) this morning launched its first offensive, writing off the stewardship of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), of which it is an offshoot.

In its Mission Statement released in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, PDM alleged that Nigeria is facing “an ultimate structural collapse” and that the country has in the last decade “witnessed an unprecedented decline in its social, economic and political fortunes.”

The new kid on the block backed by nine of the country’s 36 state governors made known its determination to take Nigeria out of the woods if it is entrusted with power and gave an insight into how it would do so. Below is the text of the Mission Statement:

In the last decade, Nigeria has witnessed an unprecedented decline in its social, economic and political fortunes. The recent lingering political and security crisis has magnified the cleavages in the nation’s multi-ethnic society and pushed our national psyche into a state of confusion, uncertainty and helplessness. The nation is now faced with a rapidly deteriorating situation of human deprivation and economic stagnation which is threatening the nation with an ultimate structural collapse.

This needs not be the plight of Nigeria and the Nigerian people because our nation is endowed with a large, quality population, abundant natural resources and a unique geo-economic location.

Recognising that it is no longer sufficient to dream good dreams about a great Nigeria, we, members of the Peoples Democratic Movement are conscious of the need for basic attitudinal reorientation towards the preservation of the unity of this nation and the restoration of self-esteem, patriotism and sense of national purpose among the people of Nigeria. This consciousness presents us with a only one option: to find lasting solutions to the mounting social, economic and political problems of our country through the institutionalization of a democratic culture that guarantees the rule of law, public accountability and the legitimacy of dissent. We must also come to terms with the problem of evolving a durable civic culture that believes in the dignity and autonomy of the human person and his individual rights; a civic culture that promotes trust, tolerance, consensus through accommodation and compromise, equity and justice; a culture that engenders a public spirit and a positive commitment to people as legitimate partners in national development. Pursuant to the above, and based on our appreciation of the history of other modern nations, we have come to accept the following:

That the nature, rate and direction of development of any nation is determined primarily by the people and not by capital or material resources alone. In other words, people constitute the ultimate basis for a nation’s wealth. We are convinced that a nation that fails to develop its people cannot develop anything else;

That real development or nation-building is nothing else but the actualization of the creative capacity of the citizens of any nation to transform available natural resources of that nation into valuable goods and services. This has to be done through the application of the creative talents and the labor power of citizens as a whole. This has been the only tested way to achieve and sustain self-reliance and development;

That the enabling environment for national development must be on the basis of National Unity, the Rule of Law, Democracy and Human Rights; and,

That for any social order to be viable and enduring, it must meet the following basic goals:

It must consistently provide social justice and cater for the genuine welfare for the people. In this context, the principle of social justice is that which ensures equitable distribution of responsibilities and benefits and allocate reward according to productivity;

It must ensure total involvement of all citizens in the structure and organization of power and in the decision making processes regardless of their social status or political persuasions. That is, it must be characterized by an enabling environment suitable for nurturing of democratic attitudes, freedom of thought and expression, legitimacy of dissent and the sacredness of electoral process;

It must ensure the promotion of national unity by reducing social tension, mistrust, ethnic marginalization, religious intolerance and nepotism;

It must promote the productivity of labor and assure equitable income under a just reward system;

It must strive towards a national disposition that can defend national interests and command international respect.

PDM is, therefore, an association of Nigerians who have agreed, based on the above fundamental imperatives, to pursue a set of objectives that will guarantee the following:

That economic and political power are genuinely democratized through political grassroot participation in the structures and organization of power. In other words, sovereignty, in all its ramifications, belongs to the people alone;

b. That leadership will be sought through a rational arrangement which will be informed by the common good and sustained by the popular will of the people;

c. That leaders must live by example through personal integrity, honesty, sincerity and commitment to fair play in the service of the people;

d. That a new political order is established which will compel the leadership to always balance power and authority with service and accountability. The system will thus guarantee social justice, equality of opportunities, national loyalty and patriotism;

That all economic policies are directed towards national self-reliance which is the cornerstone of genuine development and nation-building;;

That all efforts will be made to stamp out all anti social behavior such as corruption, terrorism, indiscipline, lack of national commitment and avarice.

An incentive structure which will promote and reward productivity and discourage indolence is

Based on the enumerated principles and determined will of our members, the PDM has a common vision of hope; the hope that the Nigerian State can still be developed into a modern nation; a nation that will posses real capability to harness her natural resources for the upliftment of the welfare of her people; a nation that will be just, peaceful and politically stable; a nation which will be capable of defending her interests anywhere and everywhere and command international respect; a nation in which all citizens will have the opportunity to lead useful and satisfactory lives.

This is our mission.

So help us God.

The only way we will know if this is just a fraud, is if PDP decides to run serious candidates in these states.

If PDP runs nobodies, and doesn't fund them, then we will know that this is just a tactic to split the Northern vote, or to shield Northern politicians from the negative effects of GEJ being on the ticket.

PDM is a party sponsored by the 5 Northern Governors who want GEJ out of the race by all means. It is a sort of ready made platform where they will fall back at to contest the presidential election with Amechi used as the VP in a likely situation that GEJ wins the pdp ticket. But the implication of this is that if Buhari (the only person in APC that has electoral value with about 12 million votes from the North alone) is filed as APC presidential candidate; and PDM brings out another Northern candiate say Kwankwaso or Lamido, then the NorthEast and North West splits its votes in addition to PDP structure there. North Central is PDP strong hold. If SouthWest becomes the only zone Buhari's APC can gather a block vote. GEJ/PDP pulls North Central, South south and South east and coasts home to victory. That is the political algebra of 2015 election. We re watching.

I don't think Buhari is going to be running this time.

There would be no reason for ACN to merge with CPC is Buhari is going to run.

Remember that CPC is basically just one man, at present. Buhari is much more valuable as a political godfather that can identify promising talent in the North, than as a four time presidential loser. If Buhari runs and loses, APC might fall apart. If Buhari becomes a "head coach" for new talent, then APC has long term potential.

With 9 governors in its kitty, this party is already as large as the APC. Not good news for the APC as it would have prefered a two way street between it and the PDP.
