“Turning the screws on a multinational company right before they need to renew their license, sort of holding them to ransom with an incredible fine -- I’m not saying that’s what the motivation here is -- but its the kind of thing that will raise red flags for foreign operators,”

also, from a different analyst:

“These kinds of incidents will only add to the checklist of reasons for investors to stay away for the foreseeable future,” said Brickman.

lol, good luck persuading the french to invest in your country
they can chose to invest or not to invest. Little would matter the real success here is the fact that Nigeria is no longer a dumping ground for company with poor services. MTN can go no company is indispensable. If they stop operations today in Nigeria another company will stand very willing and ready to take over operation from them. You cannot hold a nation ransom to you impunity.

Wow!! Just wow!!

If this guy is the most intelligent man and one of the products of south African education, I can only smh

His opinion on the way forward for MTN can best be argued by south African drunks in pubs. Not on a radio show

MTN stocks has been on a steady decline since the fine was imposed. What's to say the company will recover when it loses it's Nigerian market being it's biggest revenue earner and largest in the world.

Who is to be investigated by the forensic experts? Did the blockhead realize that mtn has been flouting Nigerian laws since it's inception in Nigeria?

3 times the deadline for sim deactivation was pushed because of this south African yellow parasite yet you animals scream of being victimized when authorities finally get serious?

Is mtn the only telco in Nigeria? Why is it mtn that has to be the one being caught doing wrong.

He talks about half baked graduates but forgot it was the same graduates that have managed the business to remain the biggest telco in Nigeria till date.

Same Nigerian engineers that have worked on expansion projects for more than a decade now and are managing other telcos in the country.

You south Africans think only jobs will be affected in Nigeria. MTN losing it's biggest revenue earner will cause a lot of downsizing which will also affect south Africans as well since your salaries come from Nigeria you illiterate fools.

And by the way, with a market like Nigeria, if mtn withdraws, the effect will only be temporary for us since they are not listed on our stock exchange and the government only has to implement policies for other telcos to close the gap or new telcos willing to come in to have a share of the market taking the advantage.

So anyway it goes, SA will be most affected.

You south Africans should beg your government to declare a state of emergency on south African brains. It's too slow for practical reasoning.
I mean I read what that person wrote and I began to wonder who the half baked graduate is.

if MTN will pay to stay in the Nigerian market. Why do you think other investors won't invest?

MTN reported that they deactivated sims long before the deadline. If then there was a failure it should be blamed on Nigeria's half-baked graduates who were hired by MTN under pretext that they are qualified for the job. Sabotage as well could never be ruled out. In SA it can take only a day to deactivate all unregistered sims. That's the nature of how highly qualified our technicians and engineers we have in our country.
I will take it that you are also a South African graduate. Ok look at it from this perspective my brilliant South African graduate. If deactivating sims is the only reason why Nigerian workers in MTN would be described as poorly skilled. They have helped in building One of Africa's biggest telecommunications network but I would only be called poorly trained when the management of MTN refused to deactivate SIM being used by fraudsters, kidnappers and terrorists.

So you literally did not read what the analysts have said?

And MTN is providing a SUPERIOR service - hence why it is such a strong player in your markets

All 4 GSM telecommunication companies are providing superior services and NCC regulate their operations. If you want to talk about service i would say GLO and etisalat provide better service than MTN. MTN just benefits from the fact that they started early and customers are not willing to change their phone numbers cos of old friends.

dude you don't know what is going on in the present Nigeria. Do you know how important MTN is to Nigeria? If MTN was operating in conformity with the law of the land why will she be sanctioned? Or you think we are so ready to get our kids back on the street in search of jobs because of how much?
Dude the present Nigeria operates with the rule of law if MTN is too big to fit in then good for her. Nigeria will be blocking about 26million bank accounts of her citizens due to their not complying with the BVN registration directive that's about half the number of people in South Africa and you think the Nigeria. Government is victimizing MTN? Well the management of MTN are about the dumbest people in the world for not preparing for possible antagonistic policies from their host government they just about played around like they owned the country. Well they don't.

who are you to say that? Your opinion and definition of what could be described as "superior service" cannot or would not pass the test of MTN's millions of Nigerian subscribers that are daily dumping their MTN sims. Check Twitter and Facebook and see if the people that they are giving this superior services are not praying for their exit from Nigeria. They have lost the support they use to enjoy from the Nigerian people and it would seem that it's curtains for MTN.

We have hundreds of vessels and we are still building more. NNS thunder, NNS Aradu, NNS okpabama, are all frigates size in any navy. Within several other OPV size vessels, we also have lots of MPVs and IPV's. We also have several fast attack boats, landing craft and several other equipments. That's what i call a navy.

Your three subs worth less than $800 million.
Your incomplete Frigate worth $300 million each = $1.2 billion

$0.8 billion + $ 1.2 billion = $2 billion.

Your navy is worth less than half the money we would collect from MTN. cheesy grin grin shocked shocked

Yesterday talks were held on the radio with SA commercial sabotage expert in which issues were raised concerning MTN's outrageous fine of $5.2 billion. It was, however noted that Nigeria is in a huge financial crisis owing to constant falling oil prices and hence will look up to any means to amount any cash even by illegitimate means.

The following possibilities were raised by experts.

1. The fine was predetermined and outrageous, no where in the world have you seen such madness.

2. The nature of Nigeria's institutions of higher learning characterised by low quality education and consequently producing half-baked professionals as in the case of Nigerian professionals whom were hired by MTN Nigeria has effectively played a role. The action of deactivating even over 100 million subscribers could not have taken SA trained technicians more than five days to complete. This effectively proves that Nigeria's universities are of a low grade for producing half-baked professionals who could not render a simple task of deactivating unregistered sim cards on their mainstream network.

3. The element of bribery could have as well taken effect, since MTN had always been a target of Nigerias government. There is a high possibility that the CEO of MTN Nigeria being a Nigerian by birth could have been compromised in exchange of exorbitant amount of bribes to drag his feet in response to catching up with the deadline set up by the commission.

What are avenues for MTN?

1.MTN should institute immediate forensic investigation with experts imported from SA and America to investigate the commission of white collar crimes and sabotage.

2. A total pull out at no cost. MTN has an option of shutting down their business in Nigeria and leave them with a burden of unemployment and shrinking GDP with nothing to pay.

3. South Africa and Indian relations have now been lifted with already some SA shops launching their business in India. MTN has an option of dumping Nigeria for India.

THIS HOWEVER SERVES AS PRECEDENT FOR FOREIGN COMPANIES AND INVESTORS TO KEEP AWAY FROM NIGERIA AND LEAVE IT TO SINK IN A POOL OF UNEMPLOYMENT AND LOW FDI.
You typically represent the millions of black south Africans: s.tupid, timid, emotionally deluded and inexperience in all spheres of human efforts.

First off south Africa has done its SIM registration which is marked by low level organisation and basic paper stuffs. No biometrics or advanced technology.

Nigeria has over 140 million gsm subscribers with mtn having 62 million, that's more than the entire population of your country. Coupled with biometrics, data capture, the process should take time.

Mtn has been fined 200,000 naira for this same offense last year as well as other gsm companies in Nigeria. While others quickly put their business in order, mtn was busy making profit.

The sheer amount of unregistered mtn subscribers that had access to the NIGERIAN network is a matter of national security, thus the huge fine.

If you accuse the NIGERIAN government of looking for easy money due to fallen oil price, may I call you an enfeebled, imbecilic , drooling ,tree-hopping Zulu.

While Nigeria economy still happens to grow 2.3 percent as at 3 quarter 2015, south Africa's economy is not stagnant : it is shrinking.

Perhaps, your government is the one looking for easy money through its multinational.

Zulu _baboon.

Coast guards do not own Otomat and Aspide missiles plus torpedoes.

NNS Aradu is confirmed for refit and reactivation next year, posted that info here from NN HQ. You too refit your ships don't you?

Aradu is far superior in firepower to all your four frigates and has ASW capability, Aradu is coming back to operation 2016 confirmed.

What tanks and LAV does South Africa sell ? Name them.

REVA MRAP was a deal done before the $9m saga, 48 units only....we bought 120 units of Chinese MRAPS.

We can't afford what you sell? The Chinese MRAP we bought is more expensive than your REVA MRAP, and we bought almost 3 times more quantity of the more expensive Chinese MRAP.

Their are South African companies leasing Bell helicopters and Gazelles that's why the $9 m deal included Bell helicopters
