We still do it even till this day. If you doubt me, go to some Igbo community website or even fb pages if you read their post you'll very likely read them addressing Igbo and their community different. Head to Asaba pages on fb, you'll very likely see our people addressing everybody else as Igbo while we are Asaba. Likewise the same with Onitsha peeps, if you go to Onitsha pages, you'll very likely see the people writing words like "those Igbo's. They igbos" as they address other Igbo group but call themselves just Onitsha.
