arabianights:You are right. BVN has nothing to do with the OTP. They just tried their luck using the BVN talk, unfortunately, the op did not think through and he fell for it. It can happen to anybody especially when you are off guard and unsuspecting. Did you say you don't even have an ATM card? waoo. I hate banking halls so much that for the past six years, i have not gone inside the banking hall to deposit or withdraw. I do online banking all through and use ATM to withdraw. |

JAZES:When it comes to hybrid scamming(Physical, OTA, Electronically) that involves the owner one way other other, the success depends greatly on the lack of knowledge of the owner. This is why I get pissed off when some individuals thinks they need a schooling IT skill to be able to detect such. You said you do not know how you got the OTP, but the truth is you had an inclination of possible fraud and you never take heed by ensuring that all i's and t's in the said OTP SMS is genuine. Moreso, no bank will initiate and call you several times on an issue without you being the first to raise the issue. No bank will send a link to you and call you if you have seen the link. Also most people do not even know what a domain is not to talk of identifying a suspicious domain. For example, Stanbic's email domain is StanbicIBTC.com and you received email from StanbicIBTCbank.com which is the web domain. When receiving correspondences details needs to be confirmed. When such number called you, the first thing to do was to verify such number by visiting their sites or through anyother means. Again, which bank will be calling customers fro BVN. In my opinion, why you were a victim because you did not think like a criminal. I think like a criminal every day when it comes to sensitive issues. I can also assume your gullibility from your post by mentioning your name and where you bank, you should have at least use a decoy name. You even gave them your OTP which should always be exclusive to you. Haba, no bank will ask you for that. Best way to avoid being scammed is to learn to think like a criminal bearing the required knowledge. Do not snub a knowledge because it won't bring money to you, but absorb, for it may save you in the feature. Cheers |

Guys, what has happened to the OP is very simple. 1. prior to the fraudster's call they already had access to the OP's internet banking account. 2. They were already at the last leg of clearing his stambic bank account and they needed the OTP code that stambic sent to the OP's phone. The OP made d mistake of calling out the code to the fraudster. if he had not done that they wouldn't have been able to dupe him. Giving anyone your OTP is like giving them your ATM pin for one of transaction. the caution is DON'T EVER REVEAL YOUR OTP AND PIN TP ANYONE. |

Hero10001:Point of correction, OTP is not exclusive to MasterCard, or visa. OTP is simply for transaction verification, which could either be a cash or non-cash transaction. Internet banking also uses OTP to authorise any activity. |

Tis simple! They (the scammers, who are likely bank staff) have access to the account details of the victim, placed a call to extract his ATM card details under the guise of BVN confirmation, access the portal of interswitch or any transfer agency, ensure that interswitch sends the OTP to the victims number, call the victim and call get the OTP under the guise of working on the BVN registration and make the transfer with the OTP generated. And voila the victim is scammed. However transfers are electronic and can be traced though the cash must have been withdrawn.Get to the bank that received the transfer and lodge a complaint.Involve the financial crime agencies like EFCC! May the LORD keep us from the devourers! |

Bluffly:you may be right but you are wrong. I've got both debit card types and i'm talking from experience. With Visacard, you'll need an ipin for any online transaction while with Mastercard, OTP is certain. visa card ipin is different to the normal visa card pin just as otp is not a mastercard's pin, gerrit? |

This scam is an old time trick. It was never about the BVN. The scammer only needed you to call out the OTP (One time password) sent to you in order to complete an Online transaction. This is clearly and insider shit or a collaboration with an insider who knows your online password. Your bank should coop with First Bank to get the customer to do you a refund. They should also lien his account, or debit his account with his permission, else you get a court injuction to retrieve your money if it's still there. If not, mehn just forget it... |

Hero10001:Please do not argue. Let me enlighten you where you got it wrong. Mastercard and Visa introduced a security code which is called Securecode for Mastercard and ipin for Visa card. Now, SecureCode does not come to your phone, it is a password secretly known to you generated by processes that vary from bank to bank while Ipin is being done at ATM's. OTP means One-time-Password which could be in soft mode of hardware. You can either generate OTP with an Hardware or you receive it via sms, this also vary from bank to bank with different limits. For example Stanbcibtc uses SMS OTP, while Zenith and most banks uses SMS OTP and Hardware. As I have said OTP is used in authorising either a cash transaction or a non-cash transaction. Example of cash transaction is using your card online or internet banking transfer of funds, a noncash transaction could be like adding a beneficiary to your internet banking. I hope my explanation is clear enough. If you've got both cards and experience, I'm also happy to bring to your notice that I have managed ATM cards when I was at intercontinental bank(Defunct). I also have all the cards and have internet banking for all my accounts which I use day in day out. I am a staunch supporter of cashless transactions. Please take correction. It will also interest you to know that SecureCode is being disable on use of MasterCard which I think same goes for Visa card to be using OTP always. Policy keeps changing. Cheers |

This is not a scam, it is an inside job from the bank period! Someone have access to your online banking details, then initiated a transaction and a OTP was sent to your phone to confirm the traffic, they called you to read back the OTN to them, so they can enter it into the online confirmation form. Some info only an inside will know, they cleared your account to the nearest thousand. Using token will help prevent this, definitely a red flag will be raised if anyone call you to give then your transaction token number. Token is not initiated and sent to you, you manual operate it and key in the token. Go to bank, threaten them, make lots of noise, tell them you are writing a petition against then, they will quickly and quietly return your money and catch the culprit, their are lots of trail the culprit will leave behind, if you do not put the bank on notice that, you will not go quiet on this, they will seat on it and do nothing. |

The scammer gave u an invalid/ unrecognized OTP which to use will require ur existing account password which is just what the scammer is looking for. Its very sad. On the issue of scammers getting access to account holders' details, the Banks' staff to a large extent hav a hand in that. Cos it will be difficult for an outsider to hav access to ur full account details including ur BVN status, think about it! Bottom line, never disclose ur personal account details like username and passwords to strangers. |

JAZES:This is what really happened. Those people used your ATM details to order for something online.... But before the transaction could be successful, your bank need to send you an OTP (One Time Password) to be sure its you. Now they have called you to have the OTP to confirm their transaction with the OTP but for you to call the code to them, they have to use BVN to penetrate you down to your blood stream. BVN is nothing with this type of fraudulent transactions. Not even your bank.... You need to know more about anything called Internet. 08138669799 is my number on whatsapp.... U can call me or message me anytime if something of such approaches again... Not even from your bank... Its a normal internet transaction. So dont stain any bank with this. Moreso, OTP do come with your bank name, and it is generated by automated computer. A banker can not tell you your OTP code, likewise your ATM password. Regards.... |

I can say it clearly to your ears that you are not familiar with OTP, OTP is a 6 digit number or 8 digit number sent by bank to confirm that you want to use your ATM to pay for anything online. That is all, of u are familiar with it , u would have known it. |

You allowed yourself to be duped. An OTP message always carries transaction message with a permission Code. The message will surely tell you that a particular transaction is about to take place on your BANK ACCOUNT. A fraudster needs your CARD DETAILS + OTP CODE for a successful transaction. OTP means ONE TIME PASSWORD which is normally sent to the CARD HOLDER for transaction confirmation. Sir, judging from your explanation, the fraudster had already secured your CARD DETAILS but not in possession of the phone number attached to the ACCOUNT. So in order to have a successful transaction, he needed OTP CODE that would be sent to your phone number by INTERSWITCH. The fraudster then asked for the OTP CODE which is the AUTHORIZATION CODE for the transaction. And you ignorantly sent him the CODE without taking pain to read the OTP transaction message which could have opened your eye to the transaction. Let us be very careful with banking messages. |

A FRAUDSTER HACKED THE BANK'S DATABASE IN ORDER FOR HIM TO GET A RICH CUSTOMER'S PERSONAL INFORMATION. HE THEN ATTEMPTED TO LOG IN INTO YOUR ACCOUNT USING THE "ONE TIME PASSWORD" (O.T.P) OPTION.. YOU PERSONALLY HANDED HIM THE O.T.P PASSWORD THAT WAS SENT TO YOUR PHONE, AND HE USED IT TO TRANSFER FUNDS FROM YOUR ACCOUNT. |

JAZES:If this is to make people be aware of likely scenarios, then, its in order but the bank StanbicIBTC should not have been dragged into it as its unfair to them for the following reasons: (1) Your User ID is your Bank Account Number which anyone can pick from your cheque leaf (2) You then require a Password which on inputing, then activates an OTP to your registered phone number, therefore, the scammers must have gotten hold of your password (entirely your fault) (3) In the story, the victim voluntarily gave out his OTP. StanbicIBTC has it written in bold "NEVER DISCLOSE YOUR OTP TO ANYONE INCLUDING THE BANK." From the foregoing, the bank is in no way liable. |
