Obiano’s Educational Reforms and Anambra’s Chart-topping Performances

In his back-page column for Thisday on Thursday last week, which he devoted to the Multina Teacher of the Year Awards, ace columnist, Segun Adeniyi made a striking observation. Surprised by the outstanding performance of teachers who represented Anambra State in the contest, Adeniyi observed – “There is something that the Anambra State Education authorities must be doing right not only because it is the state where many of the teachers scored above average. Perhaps that accounts for why candidates from the state continue to come tops in WAEC examinations every year.”

Adeniyi is not alone in his bewilderment. Many Nigerians are curious about Anambra’s recent string of sparkling performances in education. Mrs. Rose Nkemdilim Obi who teaches Mathematics in an all-girls college in Onitsha defeated her fellow teachers from nineteen other states of the federation to win this year’s edition of Multina Teacher of the Year Awards. Giving a rare insight into the brightness of her mind, Mrs Obi, a passionate teacher told the panel of five prominent academics and a columnist that decided the contest that “Teaching is a noble profession. It is a calling. It is a commitment to building the nation.” Nothing could have captured the weight of the true importance of teachers to society better than that.

The six judges, made up of Prof. Pat Utomi, Prof. Mopelola Omeogun of Univeristy of Lagos, Prof. Thomas Ofuya, Vice Chancellor of Wellspring University, Benin, Prof. Tijani Abubakar of ABU, Zaria, Dr Mrs Fatima Binta Abdulrahman and Segun Adeniyi of Thisday, were thoroughly impressed by Mrs Obi’s overall brilliance in the contest and were unanimous in the decision to give her the award.

Interestingly, two days after Nkemdilim Obi’s emergence as the Best Teacher in Nigeria, Team Anambra also emerged winners of the national Pre-basic Debate Competition held in Abeokuta, Ogun State to mark Nigeria’s 55th Independence Anniversary. Interestingly too, Anambra had won the same contest last year and subsequently flew the Nigerian flag in Singapore in June this year at the World Schools Debate Championship. The team was made up of Adachukwu Onyekwena from Girls Secondary School, Amaenyi, Awka, Nnamdi Udoji from Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha, Chinemerem Oguaba from Awada Secondary School, Obosi, Chukwuebuka Obichi from Army Day Secondary School, Onitsha and Nneka Chigozie from Mater Ammabillis Secondary School, Umoji; all public schools located in different parts of the state. The consistency that Anambra State has achieved in this credible contest of intellectual promise is re-assuring.

Anambra has also shown same striking promise in external examinations, coming first in WAEC and NECO examinations for three consecutive years. The fascinating thing about the rise of Anambra is that the young students who have brought repeated honours to the state in national and international debate championships were all drawn from public schools.
Well, for Adeniyi and other interested Nigerians who are wondering where Anambra’s performance is coming from, wonder no more. The answer is simple. Anambra State prides itself as the Light of the Nation. In figurative and literal sense, Anambra cannot be said to be anything less. Not after giving the world the great Zik of Africa, Emeka Ojukwu, Chinua Achebe, Chike Obi, Chimamanda Adichie, Emeka Anyaoku, Christopher and his brother Pius Okigbo, Prof. Samuel Okoye, Dora Akunyili, Chukwuma Soludo, Chuka Umunna, James Adichie, Ben Enweonwu and a whole universe of amazing scholars, pioneers and achievers. So, there seems to be a genetic pool where the young saplings that are astonishing the world actually came from. But even so, the recent renaissance has more to do with administrative foresight than any inherent ability.

The fact is, since he took the oath of office in March last year, Governor Willie Obiano has shown that under him, Anambra would not play second fiddle to anyone in education. He has made tough decisions, pushed hard-hitting reforms and demonstrated a thirst for excellence never seen before and today, the results are trickling in. It must be noted however, that he inherited good fundamentals in education. His predecessor, governor Peter Obi had returned mission schools to churches and made bold efforts to refocus the attention of the people on education. But Obiano has shown a more organised and structured approach that guarantees sustainability and instant results in the sector.
Obiano’s strategic approach to education is anchored on the crucial vision of becoming one of the Top-3 States with the highest literacy rates in Nigeria. Essentially, Obiano approaches education in three broad areas – infrastructural development, pupils/students development, and teachers’ welfare. In Infrastructure, his administration has renovated 862 units of 10-classroom blocks across the 21 Local Government Areas in the state and disbursed the sum of N733 million to the missions for the renovation of the schools the churches took over from the state. In Pupils/Students Welfare, his administration has kept faith with its “No-Child-Left-Behind” policy in education; awarding free education to all physically challenged children in the state. The governor took it a bit further when he awarded scholarships to the children of Boko Haram victims and other children who lost their parents while on active duty for the state. In all, the state has awarded scholarships of over N30 million in eighteen months.
Under Teachers’ Welfare, governor Obiano set precedence in Anambra State when he sent 23 teachers to Singapore to undergo training in technical and vocational education in April this year. The governor also increased the salary of teachers by 15 percent and offered incentives of 20 percent of their basic salaries to teachers deployed to hard-to-reach areas. This has greatly reduced the attrition of teachers in the areas. Similarly, teachers who teach core subjects like English, Mathematics and Sciences have been placed on a monthly incentive to encourage them. The administration has continued to invest heavily in education. It demonstrated a measure of vision in implementing a revolutionary policy that would leapfrog Anambra State into the new and dynamic digital age with the launch of One-Teacher-One-Laptop Scheme. This scheme will wipe out the absurdity of teaching computer on a chalkboard that formed Segun Adeniyi’s column which inspired this article. And just the other day, the governor sought to open more access to education for children in the riverine parts of the state when he launched 25 speedboats to mark the commencement of modern marine transportation in the state. With this scheme, pupils in riverine areas can attend classes in great schools that dot the mainland.

In conclusion, Adeniyi’s perplexity as to what Anambra is doing to get impressive results in education has an easy answer…Obiano is getting it right with his policies. The strategic three-pronged approach to education, the incentives to teachers, the heavy investments, the overseas training and the revolutionary policies nailed it fast. Thankfully, the attentive world is beginning to show appreciation. Two weeks ago, the Association of Primary School Head-teachers of Nigeria (APSHON) named Governor Obiano the Most Primary School-friendly Governor of 2015. And we hardly need a crystal ball to see that this is just the beginning.

Anambra Agog For Ogbunike Cave Carnival

Anambra State will come alive this December for a three-day long cultural fiesta tagged Ogbunike Cave Carnival (OCC) organized by 90 Degrees Entertainment.
Organised in collaboration with LIBDEZ Solution Services Ltd, the three-day festival aimed at celebrating the UNESCO World Heritage Site, will commence on December 30 and end on January 1, 2016.

According to Chuks Nwanne, the founder and Creative Director of the carnival, this year’s edition will set the tone for more innovations around the project, as well create platform for youths of the community and tourists to unwind during Xmas break.
“In 2013, when we came up with Ogbunikewalk4life, the idea was to use the health walk/mini carnival to set the tone for the main carnival. With the level of success we recorded in 2013 and 1014, it was obvious that the time has come for us to unveil Ogbunike Cave Carnival. What you will witness this year is the original format of the carnival, which has taken us three years to develop,” he said.
Based on the programme plan made available to the media, this year’s carnival will open on December 31 with Ogbunike Five Aside Tournament, a one-day football competition involving eight teams, who will slug it out for the carnival trophy. There will also be a Sport Parade, which will see football fans clad in their different club jerseys, as the parade to the market square (Oyeolisa Market) with traditional Ogene music leading the train.

On December 31, which is the day-two of the festival, the regular Ogbunikewalk4life will take the center stage. The carnival float will take off from the Ogbunike Town Hall, through the usual routes, to the Round Palace of Igwe Ogbunike, HRH John Ositadimma Umenyiora, where guests will pay homage to the King. From the palace, the train will move to the popular Ogbunike Cave, where visitors and tourist will have the opportunity of exploring the tourist destination that has put Ogbunike community on the world map. In the evening of the same day, there will be Carnival Concert/New Year Countdown at the Town Hall, with different musicians and comedians on parade.
Ada Ogbunike Beauty Pageant, the grand finale of the carnival, holds on January 1, 2016, at the Ogbunike Town Hall. The event, which will see 10 pretty Ogbunike ladies contest for the Ada Ogbunike crown, will be spiced with musical and comedy performance. Winners will be presented with prizes.
Speaking on the 2015 carnival, the Project Manager for OCC, Adaeze Uzodoh, informed that the team is doing everything possible to stage a successful event this year.
“When we came up with walk4life in 2013, many didn’t give the project a chance. But with what happened last year, it is clear that people are beginning to key into the initiative. So, this year, we are going to surprise guests with the package we are working on. As time goes on, we will update the public on the programme proper.”
Uzodoh, who is also the CEO of LIBDEZ also called on the Anambra State government, corporate organisation and well-meaning individuals to support the initiative.
“Let me use this opportunity to thank the traditional ruler of Ogbunike, Igwe John Ositadimma Umenyiora for his support to this project. From the first edition, he has been a pillar of support for us. Also, Ogbunike Progressive Union (OPU) has been very helpful in making this event a success.
“For corporate organisations, this is an opportunity to come in as sponsors; we will be glad to have you as partners in progress. We also solicit the support of the Anambra State government is growing this carnival to an enviable height. This project has the capacity of projecting the tourism potentials of the state,” she said.
Meanwhile, VISAGE Concepts Nigeria Ltd, a Lagos-based PR outfit, has been unveiled as the communications outfit for Ogbunike Cave Carnival 2015. The PR Company will be responsible for all communication about the carnival, including pre and post event.
“We are glad to be associated with this project, which I believe has the capacity of exploiting the tourism potentials of the cave,” the CEO of VISAGE, Iwuchukwu Chukwudi said.
“For three years that the Carnival has successfully held, we have observed with delight, the deep passion displayed by our young people, while showcasing their interpretation of their cultural identities through their dresses, songs and dance steps. Our joy knows no bounds when we see the joy and camaraderie radiating throughout the land.”
He added that, “we believe it is a project that can showcase the tourism potential of Ogbunike cave while engendering peace and fraternity among the Ogbunike youths. Glad this is happening because it will go a long way to project the famous Ogbunike cave and its inherent potentials to the outside world. It is a project we are glad and excited to associate our brand with.”

Redesigned Prof. Dora Akunyili Centre to gulp N500m

IN its bid to upgrade the facility for better service delivery, the Anambra State government has said it would spend the sum of N500 million to redesign and expand the Professor Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka.

The centre, which used to have an uncompleted amphitheatre, a parking space, a conference centre and guesthouse would, with the new design, have an expanded Amphitheatre, a football pitch with carpet grass and a parking space to accommodate over 2,000 cars.

Speaking with The Guardian, the state Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Frank Emeka Offor, said government is working on three stadia: the old stadium located on Arthur Eze Avenue, another at the Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre and a new facility to be sited on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, near Amansea in Awka North local government

Baileys prize crowns Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie as its 'best of the best'

Half of a Yellow Sun has been named the best winner from the last decade of the women’s prize for fiction
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
‘A benchmark for excellence in fiction writing’ … Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Pitted against nine other titles – from Zadie Smith’s On Beauty to Eimear McBride’s A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel of the Biafran war, Half of a Yellow Sun, has been named the best winner of the women’s prize for fiction of the last decade – by both the public and a 10-strong judging panel.

The award, now known as the Baileys women’s prize for fiction, chose to mark its 20th anniversary by asking the chairs of judges of the past 10 years – including Joanna Trollope, Shami Chakrabarti and Daisy Goodwin – to pick their “best of the best” winner from the last decade. Andrea Levy’s Small Island, which won the award in 2004, had previously been named the “best of the best” novel in the prize’s first decade.

Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun, in which three lives are engulfed by the war in 1960s Nigeria, was named on Tuesday evening as the judges’ choice, ahead of titles including Ali Smith’s How to Be Both, Téa Obreht’s The Tiger’s Wife, and Marilynne Robinson’s Home.

Author and journalist Muriel Gray, who chaired the judging panel in 2007 when Adichie won the award at the age of just 29, said that “while it’s sometimes pompous to call a book ‘important’, it’s appropriate to say it of Half of a Yellow Sun”.

“For an author, so young at the time of writing, to have been able to tell a tale of such enormous scale in terms of human suffering and the consequences of hatred and division, whilst also gripping the reader with wholly convincing characters and spellbinding plot, is an astonishing feat,” said Gray. “Chimamanda’s achievement makes Half of a Yellow Sun not just a worthy winner of this most special of prizes, but a benchmark for excellence in fiction writing.”

Adichie was also voted winner of the “best of the best” accolade by members of the public, following a fortnight of programming on Woman’s Hour in which each chair of judges was interviewed about the novel they had championed.

Adichie said she had “a lot of respect for the books that have won [the award] in the past 10 years and also for the books that have been shortlisted”.

“This is a prize I have a lot of respect and admiration for – over the years it’s brought wonderful literature to a wide readership that might not have found many of the books,” said the novelist. “I feel I am in very good company. To be selected as ‘Best of the Best’ of the past decade is such an honour. I’m very grateful and very happy.”

Changing sponsorship has meant that the honour has been variously known over the past decade as the Women’s prize for fiction, the Orange prize for fiction, and the Orange Broadband prize for fiction before acquiring its current name in 2014.

[size=13pt]My brother, thanks a lot.
The problem as rightly pointed out is that some people have the lowest form of IQ and they just cannot imagine things done outside of the way they know it.they think if they don't know about something, it does not exist. Unfortunately for them, all they know is the wrong way everything is done in Nigeria.

I remember in 1990s when i returned from USA, i had told someone that the mobile phone technology sweeping the USA then will someday be the greatest tool of bridging the digital backwardness of Africa. Infact, a time will come people will make telephone call from Amichi to USA. The men there argued so blindly that day, asking funny questions as; where will we see electricity required to power landlines, who will fund the wires on the pole,Whose land will the poles pass, will Nitel have a staff office in Amichi, even if they did, who can afford a mobile phone in Amichi etc, etc. they concluded that "America had entered my head" and thus i couldn't reason anymore. While indeed, it was their poor IQ that was preventing them from seeing what almost everybody else in the world had seen by then. Needless to say, i reminded the same men about our argument later when MTN reception reached Amichi and i called them on their phone and spoke to them from USA in 2004! grin

A similar argument that thought cell phones were an impossible thing is happening here about cows.
The way fulani rears cows and walks them thousands of kilometers is wrong and archaic. Comparing that ancient and outdated way of rearing cows to the modern ranching method is similar to the comparing how chickens are raised in the villages by allowing them to roam about and find whatever it eats,, to a modern poultry way of raising chicken to maximize eggs production and meat. The problem is that a villager that has never seen nor imagined a modern poultry will argue you to death that such isn't possible in Nigeria.

Permit me to ask - are you from Amichi?

Seven Energy confirms stake in Anambra gas field

Chief Executive Officer of Seven Energy International Limited, Phillip Ihenacho, has disclosed that the company was targeting the development of the Anambra basin for the supply of gas to industries in the eastern and parts of northern Nigeria.
Ihenacho said in an interview in Abuja that Seven Energy was investing substantially on three blocks in basin with hope of supplying gas to power plants and local industries.

He said: "In the 70's a few wells were drilled in the Anambra basin and were subsequently abandoned. Then, the last thing you wanted to find was gas, so the wells were sealed and left. The Basin sits effectively underneath Onitsha, Nnewi, Aba and Owerri all the way up to Enugu which are all areas with substantial light industry, using diesel fuel.

"We have recently farmed into three blocks in the Basin and our plan is to invest in developing gas in that area in order to supply gas to these locations. This will take time, as there has not been that much sub-surface work done in the area to date.
"This is a long-term plan and we hope to use a combination of pipelines and compressed natural gas that can be delivered by road in the interim. We are exploring near-term ways of monetising gas such as compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas.
"There are CNG players in the market today. Lagos and Port Harcourt are being supplied already. This presents a big opportunity for Seven Energy to assist with the industrialisation in these areas, but also to support power and industry further afield in large cities in the North such as Kaduna and Kano, which can be reached by road deliveries of CNG or LNG".

Ihenacho explained that so far the company has invested over $800million in developing gas infrastructure in its area of operation between Port-Harcourt and Calabar and up to Aba.

"We have invested in pipeline infrastructure which, once we have completed the next phase, will mean we have a pipeline network of over 250 km and a processing plant that can process in excess of 200million standard cubic feet a day of gas. This is a substantial investment and by next year, we will have invested over 1 billion dollars.
"It is not easy to raise capital for infrastructure and the success of our business is essential for Nigeria to continue to attract further investment in the sector. Success will bring further capital.

"We have invested on the basis of long-term off-take agreements with Ibom Power, UNICEM - the Lafarge cement factory and Calabar NIPP and these agreements are 10-20 years in duration. Ideally these contracts are backed up by credit enhancement or guarantee, for example the World Bank is working with us on Calabar NIPP.

"These contracts give us a few anchor customers with which we have long-term off-take contracts. It is very similar to constructing a new building where you look for a few tenants who can take a few floors for a 10-year lease, and once these are in place, you have the confidence to build. Once the building is ready, you can then look for additional tenants".
He said the country needs to "unlock money for the private sector and this can be facilitated by working with organisations like the World Bank and African Development Bank to enhance credit and provide some sort of guarantee to create credit worthy long-term contracts".
