HELP!!! Temporary Well Paying Job VS Permanent Low Paying One by Mishydoo(op):
This would be one of the most difficult decisions in my life!
I am 27 and currently working on contract(locum)with a multi national company which pays well(>300),excellent working conditions. However, since I am not a full staff, anythng can happen,i work for jst 6 months in a year and earn as much as someone who works for a whole year in a teaching hospital. Plus extra 6 months to do other things as I am planning to run my masters.

Now,i am offered a PERMANENT Federal government job at a Teaching hospital that pays half of what I currently earn per annum. You must understand that such federal jobs don't come easy(maybe once in 5-10yrs)

Which should I choose huh huh huh huh huh

@OP, if you're trying to say that the Parmanent position pays half of you present monthly pay yearly, then I really think you shouldn't be worried. What is there to be worried about?

This is really a decision you have to take your time to make.

A contract job where you work 6months and earn over 300k vs a full time federal government job. Noting that you're planning to run your Msc program.

For me, I'd go with a full time federal government job any day. Reason being that full time FG jobs comes with job security. They don't sack people anyhow. Unlike contract where once the need arises for the company to reduce their staff strength, you're gone. Or once your contract expires. No pay off, nothing...they just dump you.

Secondly, if you add up the allowances and annual salary which you'll receive in a full time FG job, it might exceed that of the contract job or the difference wouldn't be much. And you should note that in a full time FG job, you have the advantage being promoted (which means your salary is likely to increase upon promotion) and going on leave.

Contract job on the other hand is all work with no leave, no benefits, no promotion...and you wake up each day with the fear of having your contract terminated. Yes you have all 6months free for yourself, but if you aren't guaranteed of becoming a full staff there, then you should have a rethink.

I can't make any choice for you. I would just advise you to weight your options. I've listed the advantages and disadvantages of both and I believe that you'll come to a rational conclusion which would be beneficial to you.

Good luck.

Federal government job is good, but if you want to really grow in life, you should be open to taking risk and not just accepting things because of security. A contract job that allows you to have six months of free time is quite rare to come by. Yes, they can sack you at any time, but who says they would? Besides this, take a look at some Federal government retirees, they got so used to the security of their jobs that they did little for their own personal development and soon time passed them by. Remember the power of association? You will slowly start living a mediocre lifestyle because of the type of people within the civil service, Goodluck.

Wow, very very nice analysis... I like d way u reasoned it out on so many levels, so called job security, death of zeal for personal growth nd infection of d mindset, cuz these so called civil servants have this way of seeing things, like oh"we are safe, pension is sure, "basically there is no motivation to grow career wise as regards self development except for promotion sake to increase the salary

Pidggin...Nice one, Wahali if to say I never marry, I for propose to you just for this singular advice..Association, personal development and free time matters in life too....

OP...That's a tight one...Job security matters though. However, I would weigh the other benefits of the contract job, especially talking from an Oil and gas perspective where some people are paid your monthly salary in one week yet they call them contract staff..where people are seen to work rotations of 2weeks on and 2weeks off or 1month on and off and end up working for 6months in a year ....As an Ibo Boy, money First...you can achieve a lot within a short time like getting your house built etc.....you could plan your life properly, start your masters, vacations, more time with your kids, side business etc during the 6 months time off......choose wisely, and remember, the riskiest thing in this life is not taking risks...
