The Nigerian constitution needs to be amended. I think it's objectionable that states cannot explore their natural resources.

Look at coal from a well that was dug in enugu. I'm seeing this for the first time
That's not coal it's shale!
I'm a geology. It's one of the most common word in geology.
It's dark ash in colour.
Looks like cement sometimes.
Just Google the word shale and look for images.

The only sensible comment on the thread. You must be a geologist?

That nonsense is not coal. It's shale. It's found in also every post of the anambra basin.
Yes I'm a geologist.
Verify. Google shale and see what comes up in images.
Please we should educate ourselves.
I was shocked nobody commented that it wasn't coal.
Apc thugs, over to you.
Anti Biafra thugs what are you waiting for, capitalize on this!

Yes oh.
You can't blame people though.
It's usually belle the surface so it's not common sight.
Plus, when at the surface too long the colour is diluted and changed.
But it's texture remains the same.
I'm mineralogy, we are taught that minerals don't have a particular colour. Most times the dominant mineral reaction with something else causes the colour.
Example iron, Fe, in when found in a particular soil, clay for example, makes red in colour.

It is called baked shale when it becomes so hard due to heat. First time in I saw a baked shale, I thought it was basalt grin

nope. U can be very busy and still be in nairaland. Even a minute in the rest room is enough but most importantly, analyze the thread u wanna comment on before posting.
how can i analyze a thread? Is it true people book spaces (buying plot land for commenting) and can comment even after the 2nd person does and still make FTC? cheesy

Shale as in the shale currently being converted to petroleum by the US?
Re: When You Dig A Well In Enugu, What You Will See (Photos) by pazienza(m): 3:37pm On Nov 09, 2015
OP, you must be new to Enugu. Any well dug within Uwani, Gariki, Awkunanaw, Idaw River, Achara layout, Maryland, infact the whole of Enugu city will always result in bringing that soil type you called coal to the surface, it's a common Knowledge here.

What I don't know is if that soil type is actually coal, I had always seen it as a coal not yet fully formed, and so not commercially viable. That had been my layman understanding, cos that was the only conclusion I could reach, each time I saw it dug out from wells and then disposed off or used to level ditches on the roads, I imagined they were of no commercial value.

I don't know about that oh.
But I know shale when I see it.
If U see shale, you're more likely to discover crude oil than water.
Quoting my petroleum geology lecturer.

This is interesting. If that stuff is truly shale, it means that the entire Enugu city is sitting on a massive reserve of Shale.

I might need to investigate this further, thanks for the heads up.

Unfortunately, coal has been replaced by natural gas as the fuel of choice of most industrial processes around the world. Coal fired power plants have been replaced by gas fired plants and hydro power plants. Air polution and ozone depletion is the by product of using coal industrially.

Coal is essentially useless to Enugu at this point.
. Says who? True, natural gas is the. Most environmentally friendly fossil, but coal still provides above 50% of world's electricity. This is because coal fired power plant scattered everywhere in the US and China hv not be decommisioned. I takes millions to build power plants, so they can't b discarde with ease.
