This was done by isis affiliates that have never been to Syria and Iraq and who swore allegiance to the caliphate from the comfort of their homes.

These were lone wolf amateur attacks that only made the news because of what is happening in Yemen.

An isis affiliate is isis also, it can also be called branch they take orders from their leader, same as al-nusra front take advice from alqaedah their afilliate too.
