Hello everyone,

I went for an interview last week. The interviewer enquired about how much I was looking to earn. I said since it was entry level position, I believe there is a salary range and an amount fair to me is alright.

Did I make any mistake? I noticed the lady wanted me to be specific. I didn't want to look greedy.

It is a local exploration and production company.

Your opinions please?

There's always a salary scale for every job level. It is required that you research what's accruable to the company and state a range within that.

Hello @damzy88, you gave an intelligent but, also, a tricky answer. I believe you did your research about the company before going for the interview. If so, you could have sticked to the research range. Of course, research is not a difficult thing- you may contact some in house to know what they are actually paying. All in all, you gave a wise answer still. At least, you didn't mention 2 million per month (lol). My observation is just for people that will be going for interview soon.

It's always ideal to give a range base on your research. How would they know the amount that is fair to you? . Take into cognizance a situation whereby an applicant gives a range and their pay falls within. Don't you think the applicant is better of compared to who said they should know the fair amount. The HR folks actually knew the pay but it an applicant job to state the pay. Just saying this because of the sensitivity of interviews nowadays.

That is the best answer to give to the question, especially in situations where you don't have idea of the salary package of the company.

Your answer is the right one. Be calm dear.

A structured company has got compensation for each level, especially, if it's entry level. That question is to fullfil all righteousness unless the post interviewed for is that of an experience employee.

You can't be paid beyond what is budgetted for that entry level.

I reckon that that question for that entry level position is a decoy question, and its purpose is nothing but to gauge your propensity to gluttony.

If she had really wanted specifics, she would have pressed further.

What I do is give my expected sum in a range. i.e. Between 90 and 120 or between 60 and 80, e.t.c.

For an entry level position, your answer should do just fine.
Re: I Was Not Specific About My Salary Demand by Nobody: 11:36am On Nov 16, 2015
No you didn't.

Some people would have messed up and quoted six or seven digits which would have been under priced or over priced.

And for entry level, (without experience), no need to over price.

It can be both risky n fine. Risky in the sense that the employer assumes you Don't really know your worth n hence will grab at anything and if it is a one-man biz, be sure to be underpaid; Also it is fine in the sense that you Don't over price urself or under price yourself and as such allow the coy to pay you from an already existing salary structure.
Which ever way it comes, be grateful first if u land the Job.

1) If it's a good company that appreciates you they will make a fair offer that is inline with the industry. I would throw you in the mid range of the salary scale for your position depending on the interview.

2) If you're a good employee, you can become the CEO in a few years by hard work and education so the point will be moot.

The CEO of my company came in as a mail room clerk years back.

Is this glass half empty or full?
