The impression that Nigeria is made up of 250 or 300 ethnic groups is not true. At the conference of Nationalities convened by the Campaign for Democracy (CD) in Lagos in 1999, participant overwhelmingly identified thirty-four (34) ethnic nationalities in Nigeria namely Hausa, Fulani, Igbo, Yoruba, Bini, Ibibio, Efik, Ogoni, Ijaw, Nupe, Itsekiri, Tiv, Oron, Igala, Edoma, Kanuri, Urhobo, Gwari, Zango -Kataf etc. What many linguistics mistake to mean autonomous languages and therefore distinct ethnicities are dialects or variants of standard languages. Due to some misunderstanding among linguistics, the contention had remained that any dialect which autograph could be developed is no longer a variant of its original language. The point is that language difference alone does not constitute a people into an ethnic nationality. Other characteristics include distinction in culture and religion. Therefore, since the cultures and religions and even histories of a people claiming to be different nationalities are same and their dialects only variants of one language, such people are not people of different ethnic nationalities. For further illustration, Igbo has different dialects...Nsukka has a different dialect so also Enugu Ezike, UDI, Ezeagu, Ebonyi state etc. An Anambra man may not understand them but understands Anioma dialect or even some Rivers state Igbo dialect more easily. All these are different dialects of Igbo language that has evolved and keeps evolving...But in all, the homogeneity in culture, religion etc are intact...So they are Igbo...Even if they choose to deny their Igbo origin today for political convenience or other selfish reasons...it doesn't change the fact that they are Igbo...That I disown my father doesn't make me the son of another man or remove my father's DNA from my body...Balkanization of Igbo after the civil war didn't help matters...as well as political inconvenience of being Igbo at that time... The Igbo experience may not be same for other areas in Nigeria, who may have their own tales...but claiming home to about 250/300 ethnic groups is a farce. Copied from Arthur Agwuncha Nwankwo timeline and slightly edited by me...Thanks and God bless |

Junior66:thanks corrected... @bolded...Are those languages accompanied by cultural, religious and other historical homogeneity or simply a particular language evolving over time just like every language has done and keeps doing overtime?...because language alone doesn't make you a distinct ethnic group... |

Whynotthetruth(m): 2:18pmU need to get your facts right before speaking. Edo is the name of a state not an ethnic group. There is nothing like Edo ethnic group or Edo tribe. What u have is Bini, Esan, Igbanke etc. |

Whynotthetruth:I am talking of languages with no afinity at all. For instance, in the middlebelt, state, the Igalas, Ebiras, Bassas, Okuns, Idomas, Tivs, Jukuns, etc are not even remotely related. This is just a small part of the middle belt. |

Op you have to do more research before you come into conclusion by just relying on someone's knowledge that maybe inconclusive. An ‘ethnic group’ has been defined as a group that regards itself or is regarded by others as a distinct community by virtue of certain characteristics that will help to distinguish the group from the surrounding community. Ethnicity is considered to be shared characteristics such as culture, language, religion, and traditions, which contribute to a person or group’s identity. Ethnicity has been described as residing in: • the belief by members of a social group that they are culturally distinctive and different to outsiders; • their willingness to find symbolic markers of that difference (food habits, religion, forms of dress, language) and to emphasise their significance; and • their willingness to organise relationships with outsiders so that a kind of ‘group boundary’ is preserved and reproduced This shows that ethnicity is not necessarily genetic. It also shows how someone might describe themselves by an ethnicity different to their birth identity if they reside for a considerable time in a different area and they decide to adopt the culture, symbols and relationships of their new community. It is worth noting that the Traveller Community is recognised as a distinct ethnic group in the UK and Northern Ireland, but only as a distinct cultural group in the Republic of Ireland. |
