You may have to calm down with this your ant-UK campaign and allow people to make up their own mind. You have been on this for too long now. People have their reasons for choosing the UK and not Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

It's not an anti UK campaign, I love the UK but the immigration laws are not in favour of international students and it is consistent with conservative policies over the years.

So please why not say it as it is or at least don't try and paint me as anti UK. Biko I take God beg you

I have said all needed to be said about the UK for ages now and you can read back if you have forgotten.

Have a balanced view and avoid giving people onside of the story only

Everything in life has a proceedure and process even the way we talk and discuss.
What you are talking about does it tally with the thread?
Did you see anyone post anything relating to stay back in the uk after school?

So someone must talk about it before I talk about it. As far as I am concerned it is in relationship with how Nigerian students in the UK survive.

I feel prospective students should be fully aware of job prospects in their intended country of study.

So I am well in order. At least I haven't been moderate by justwise.

I've been occasionally checking out this thread for months, but avoid commenting.

I'd like to contribute my small opinions.

I was a Nigerian student in UK a few years ago. I was here on a full PG scholarship, and a good one. They paid on time, rarely delayed, and the amount was enough for me to not work.

I also got a good job and started work immediately I finished my degree. I have friends, who got their PG degrees before and after me, that also found work in UK too. In fact, it was through the advice of one of the older guys that I was able to get my job.

I'm willing to offer any assistance and answer questions that anyone may wish to personally ask.

Cheers.

A good post from spacyzuma grin

Just shows that there are good things to be had for those that work hard.
One problem is that some people seem to think that just getting a visa to U.K. or U.S.A.
Is an automatic passport to well paid jobs and riches.

When thy find out that things are not that simple they get bitter and twisted and blame conspiracy and racism!

Several tips to getting a job in UK:

1) As soon as you arrive and settle in, get a National Insurance Number. You can't get a legal job without it.

2) My friend told me: that I have two main tasks in UK. Focus on getting a good degree, and focus on getting a good job. And both of them will consume my time a lot if I wanted to be successful in both.
During my first team (Sept - Dec), I applied for more than 30 jobs across several sectors in UK. Every weekend, I would spent between 6-12 hours going through tons of company websites and applying through many of their recruitment portals. It's not an easy task, believe me.

3) Due to the migrant restrictions, not all companies can hire non-EU nationals. I learned to focus on only the companies that have Tier II visa sponsorship certificates. The UKBA or Home Office has a list of companies with that privilege.

4) I subscribed to several services that inform you of vacancies and job openings. I used "gradcracker" and "milkround". Join them and setup your profile to receive regular email alerts about jobs/internships that you're interested in. I also attended as many job fairs as I could. Mainly to talk to their reps about their companies, if they hire foreigners, how their graduate schemes are, etc...and also to collect lots of free pens, jotters, flash drives, etc. wink

5) Timing is important. Most of the top companies start recruiting for graduates around August - Jan, to start the next September/October. So if you start your masters in Sept/Oct, you can apply to many companies before your first term exams begin in January. The best time to apply is before December, cos by then you'll be neck-deep in schoolwork, preparing for exams, there'll be less hours of daylight, and the winter darkness and snow will easily get you depressed.
These companies recruit while following the academic calendar. After first semester exams in January (or in December, before exams), they start calling for interviews and assessment centres.

6) Being in the UK for the first time, the urge to travel around and flex and have plenty of fun is strong the first few weeks. I remember being jealous that many of my classmates and colleagues and fellow Nigerians were having parties, flexing, travelling to new cities etc. That time is better spent applying for jobs if you really want one.
I remember once when I went to London for a December interview, and got back to my school close to midnight, to attend a birthday party that was almost finished. By March, I had secured a job...6 months before graduating. Since I started that job, I have travelled a lot across UK...much more than some of my former classmates then.

7) Practice aptitude tests until you can do them with your weaker hand while in a drug-induced orgasmic state of unconsciousness. Practice, Practice, PRACTICE!!! If your job application is accepted (and if you're a STEM student), you'll definitely do several aptitude tests, both online and physical.

cool

If I think of anymore tips, I'll add them.

PS: I see some people bashing GeneralShepherd for being negative about UK. I don't think that's fair. Statistics show that he is correct. If I had my way originally, I'd have gone to US or Canada for my masters. UK keeps making it harder for EU and non-EU migrants to get jobs and settle in. The main advantage that UK has is that masters is just one year, and admission is very easy to get. PG education is a huge source of revenue for UK. They attract you with easy admission, charge you outrageously, rush you through in as short a time as possible, and then find ways to make you get out as soon as possible. The latter half of my masters was very stressful, and if I was still busy applying to jobs and going for interviews, I might have collapsed.

Cheers

It is always worth remembering that the best jobs go to the best students at well regarded schools.
Many Nigerians looking to study in the UK are seeking the cheapest schools without checking their post study record of employment.

Top grades will help to get you noticed by people who can push you forward.
Working part time, partying and only looking at study near to exam time will get you a low degree and no job offers.
All that money spent and it's back home to sell yams in the market! sad

So suggesting studying in another country is destroying the travel section. Your thought processing is really poor, I wonder the kind of programmes you develop with such illogical thinking

Actually, GeneralShepherd is right, and it's not fair that he is being insulted for expressing his opinion in a public forum. I also share the same opinion as well, and I think this issue should be continuously flogged regardless of how many times it has been flogged in the past. The positives and the negatives of living and working in the diaspora should be spoken about, and then people should be allowed to make their own informed decisions. These views do not constitute thread derailment, it fits into the key objectives of this thread i.e. giving advice to intending immigrants on how good or bad living in the diaspora is.

On one hand hand I agree with you, prospective students needs to know the realities of living in these foreign countries- good, bad etc
But When it becomes repeated every other pages then it gets irritating especially with the amount of information out there, one would expect anyone intending to study for a PG degree will have access to these info and make informed decisions.

Some people see their student visa as a ticket out of naija and many conclude working in the UK is the only way to recoup their investments, what about working elsewhere?

moving to Abuja doesnt translate to landing a government contract..same way studying in England doesnt guarantee anyone a working visa..

I have to disagree with you here, its very misleading to be peddling one side of a situation, you don't tell somebody don't come to the UK because the U.K govt don't like foreign students, that is misleading. Not everybody is coming to the UK to settle down or stay back to look for job, some want to study and go home, some come and still get a job after graduation.

GeneralShepherd graduated and got a job in Australia with his UK qualification, has the UK not benefited him? So why not allow others to take the same step and see what is out there for them?

Please, unless you are on scholarship, do not come and study in the UK. The government in the UK do not like international students and it is virtually impossible to get a job when you graduate.

For me the essence of international education is to gain some international working experience before you return to your home country.

Please go and study in Canada, Australia or New Zealand. I am saying this from experience

Australia is so accommodating that an engineering graduate from the UK is eligible to apply for an 18 month temporary graduate work permit.

GeneralShepherd sir, it is okay to give us warnings about the increased difficulty in getting a job post study in the UK, Justwise sir as you have highlighted, some people have got jobs post study in the UK, both of you are correct if we look at it critically, it ultimately depends on the prospective students really, no need to go back and forth on this to ascertain who is right or wrong.

I concur with this
Though I think it was his constant negative speaking of the UK that brought vitriol G.Shepard's way shocked shocked
1 thing I imbibed subliminally in the UK is that everyone has choices and opinions and should be left to advocate such
Even if that opinion will bring desolation or grief in future, that person has a right to such
This differs from Nigeria where contrary opinions to rocking the boat are not enthusiastically embraced
Personally, I don’t dig the UK but I have people who can swear by Queen Elizabeth's derriere cool just to enter there
But to each his own.
