I am. PhD applications vary from Uni to Uni. All the advice that I will give will be based on my experience applying to the "big boys". Getting a supervisor may take days, weeks or even months depending on how prompt the Prof responds to emails. I remember receiving responses to some of my emails after I had already accepted an offer elsewhere.

Typically, the process include:
Find a supervisor
Discuss potential projects with the supervisor
Write a research proposal
Supervisor officially agrees if convinced that one is ready for the "game" ahead
Apply for admission and/or scholarship: In most cases, applications are first considered for admission (5weeks +) before onward consideration for scholarships (8wks +). For instance, one's application might be successful for admission but not for scholarship.

Most importantly, your first email needs to be "catchy". Also, it will be of importance to let them know that you'll be applying as a self-funded student as a lot of them consider funding before agreeing to act as a supervisor.

You are welcome to send me a PM if you have more personal questions to ask. I know there are 2 other PhD students on this thread, albeit missing in action, who might want to add one or two points.
Thanks alot ,I will do as you have advised. I hope to share my testimony too. Please could you assist if you can as per supervisor ...

I wish to ask a few questions as I seek an Australian visa.

I work offshore as a geophysicist and by the nature of my profession, I find myself visiting several countries and this time Australia has been earmarked.

I have already made an application for a Maritime Crew Visa online (this allows me work offshore) but would be needing another visa to get into the country.

I have found I would be needing a visitor's visa (something like category 600). However, I'm not quite sure which subcategory it would be.

I'm presently in the UK but not resident here.

So the questions I have are :

Can I make this application from the UK (online I guess)?

What documents would I be needing to provide?

What are the timelines?

Cost?

Please note, I made a call to the Australian High Commission here in the UK, and was told I don't necessarily need to make the trip down to Nigeria to make the application. Yet, I know sometimes things are lost in conversations over the phone.

Please does anyone here know how to go about this?

My employers have already provided a letter of introduction and sponsorship which I intend to add to my application once I know what direction I need to go.

THIS IS QUITE URGENT!!

Thanks in advance.

cheers!!

Prontopil,

The high commission in the UK already answered your question.

In as much as you have legal right to be there, you can apply from there.

To our ranking members,

Who has used FCMB Visa Card in OZ ?
Will be heading to BNE soon and would like to know if I can leave some funds in my account and wipe it out there.

As my bank is not doing PTA, and I want to avoid the killer dollar rates of BDC's, what are the best alternatives available?

Thanks in anticipation,

GodWin

Hello House,

Please I need advice from the gurus here.

My student visa application was recently declined by Pretoria.

I applied to study Civil Eng and got admission and CoE from Deakin. I have a B.eng in Civil Engineering and graduated 7 years ago. Although I have worked in a finance firm all these 6years after graduation, I have done pro-bono jobs with some Engineering firms to stay in touch.

In being denied, these are the reasons my case officer claims:

1. Though I am married and have a child, it is not enough incentive to return .
2. He also says since the economy of Australia is better, he doesn't think I will want to come back.
3. No letter of future employment.
4. Since I have been in a finance firm, doesn't think or see sense in doing a Masters in Civil and Water Engineering) and thinks it pays me more to remain in finance

Please I really want to re-apply and need advice on how to go about it to avoid bad news the 2nd time.

Please Gurus in the house, show me the way, PLEASE

You shot yourself in the foot by declaring all your 6 years finance experience. 6 years outside your field is a lot of time and truly doesn't make sense going for an Engineering graduate degree. My advice is for you to apply for masters in project management, construction management or business administration.
Re: General Australian student Visa Enquiries Part 2 by sizmokool: 11:27am On Nov 19, 2015
Thanks @johnsontade

If I change my course, wont they say start suspecting foulplay? Cos I really want to go back to the engineering field?

Please advice

I think you should just go through the PR route as engineering work experience is not compulsory as long as you can meet up to 60 points without work experience. The only hitch you may have is finance experience on your CV when going through Engineers Australia assessment. It may raise questions.

Sizmocool,

The guy has no right to tell you path to tow. He is one of those "mumu" who think like robot.

Even if you have spent 10years in finance, there is something called career change and redirection.

If you can tidy up the first three points, you can proof your engineering interest with a good SOP. It is career redirection. You want to practice what you read in your undergraduate, then find cogent reasons for the renewed interest.
