THEY were branded ‘heroes of our time’ after conquering the
rest of the world to win Nigeria’s fifth FIFA U-17 World Cup
title last week in Chile.
The Presidency and Nigerians from all walks of life
applauded the boys for “the exemplary zeal, determination,
commitment, hard work, patriotism and soccer artistry” they
displayed throughout the tournament.
Nigeria becoming the first country to win the title for a fifth
time was the biggest story of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile
2015.
But a few days after, the players are unhappy, lamenting
what they called ‘deliberate attempt’ on the part of the
Federal Government to turn their moment of joy to sorrow.
Unlike in the past, when such victorious teams were accorded
the best reception, including cash rewards, players of the
Golden Eaglets were allegedly handed a paltry N20,000 each,
as they were disbanded in Abuja last Thursday. The money,
according to the players, could not even fetch them flight
tickets to take them home to see their loved ones.
Now, the players are beginning to speak out their mind,
pointing accusing fingers at the Presidency.
“I was told the Presidency is yet to approve the budget
submitted by the NFF for our participation in the World Cup
and that is not good enough, one of the players, a striker,
told The Guardian yesterday, pleading anonymity. “As I speak
with you, we are yet to get our winning bonuses for some of
the matches we played in Chile. The NFF is telling us not to
speak with anybody concerning it (the non-payment), but for
how long?” he asked.
Another player, a midfielder, who also spoke with The
Guardian yesterday said: “The fact that we are young players
does not mean that we don’t need money. Since we returned
from Chile, it is expected that we show some appreciation to
some of our friends and relations, who prayed for our
success in the World Cup. We couldn’t buy gift from Chile
because the money was not there.
Our Senators and House of Representatives members should
come to our aid. We don’t even know if President
Muhammadu Buhari will host us or not.
But they should make money available for our camp
allowances and winning bonuses.”
No official of the NFF and the National Sports Commission
was willing to speak on the issue yesterday.

Why should Presidency pay or approve their budget after the tournament is over ?

Is that not NFF's job / money ?


NFF should be held responsible they should stop lieng on presidency or budget approval.

When it is election time they run to FIFA to claim they are not answerable to any Govt but finances they gide under the sane Govt.


Was allowance not agreed before they left?

So budget of camp allowance and match bonuses is still with the presidency and they went and came back

It seems almost everything about Buhari, and by extension Nigeria, of late has been one bad news after the other.

The whole thing is turning to be a real disappointment honestly.

We all need to keep praying for the President, whether you like him personally or not. He needs help. Nigeria needs help.

Fool......so it's FIFA that provides money for all Football Federation across the World for their National Teams to pay winning bonus n match allowances and yet when some National teams mostly in Africa boycott some matches over unpaid allowances and then FiFA sanctions the country over inability of the Football authority not being able to pay match allowances to it's National Team ....you must be living in fool paradise....if u know nothing about the various roles the Government n FIFA plays in financing. Football Federations across the world , keep ur mouth shut. n stop typing nonsense from that Sudanese janja-weed phone given to u as a birthday gift ..... u need to be tied to a mango tree n flogged hundred times, until u receive common sense .

No up and coming player will feel discouraged. The said money is their bonus. Putting on the national colours in a football match alone is a thing of pride. Do you know the number of the players that have been penned down by foreign clubs because of the opportunity given to them in the U-17 World Cup finals? Are they the best in Nigeria? No!

According to DailyPost, the FG is to host the team come Sun. November 29th. So what's the guardian trynna say? They wanted to also make the gullible ones believe that Buhari only gave those guys 20K each.

Were those boys promised any money? If they were, the should tell us the amount. FYI, winning a competition in itself comes with pecuniary reward from the organizers. Can those boys tell us that it is only the trophy that they got from FIFA.

I don't blame them, but Jonathan who not only lavish money on them but also gave them national honours. How many countries give national honours to sportsmen?
