1-Its unjust for a govt to contemplate reducing workers pay of ₦18,000. What can that amount buy in today's Nigeria? #Dontreduceminimumwage

2-A worker with a family earns less than a member of the NYSC who earns ₦19,800. Reducing his pay is unconscionable! #Dontreduceminimumwage

3-A man earning ₦18k struggles to pay rent, feed family & pay school fees. To reduce his pay is to punish his family #Dontreduceminimumwage

4-At Silverbird all our 1000 staff/family earn above minimum wage because I cant afford not to pay my staff well #Dontreduceminimumwage

5-Why cant I afford not to pay my staff well? Because if I don't pay them well, I am giving them a license to steal #Dontreduceminimumwage

6-If FG & state govts dont pay workers well they invite workers to steal. To end corruption we must pay workers well #Dontreduceminimumwage

7-Anybody thinking of reducing the ₦18,000 minimum wage should himself first try and live on ₦18,000 for a month #Dontreduceminimumwage

very very well spoken! anyone who feels 18k/month is too much is very evil and should himself try to first live on 18k for a month while catering for his every need. but for greed, misrule, selfishness, misplacement of priorities and the kleptomaniac tendencies of all our past and probably present leaders, 35k minimum wage isn't too much for government at all levels to pay in this country.

Honestly this post got me thinking... certainly it's obvious our state govts are heartless. Even their kids won't accept 50k as monthly allowance from their parents. May God help we the masses.

Minimum Wage, Maximum War. Well put Bruce.

The problem is not paying the minimum wage. Nigeria can actually pay the minimum wage, but there so many root and contributory causes. The underlying issues go beyond just not being able to pay the minimum wage. But when the government openly embezzles and spends on frivolities, how do they expect the citizens not to ask for their fair share?

A lot of these things happen when the civil service is over bloated and everyone is looking to work in the civil service because ''it will give them time to do other things''. When a man or woman is looking for how to come to work by 10 am and leave by 2 pm they go into teaching or one of the arms of the civil service. When a politician is looking for where to employ his nieces, nephews and girlfriends they seek the civil service.

Do not get me wrong there are hard workers in the civil service and some arms do create real value. However, it is majorly over bloated with redundant staff. What value is created in many arms of the civil service? A civil service where to get service you have to beg, go back a million times, bribe, curry favor, inflate contracts, give kick backs, etc?

Develop the private sector. Encourage private investment. Better even if it is home grown private investment. The government cannot be the major employer of labour. It is an indicator that private investment is not thriving and innovation is not being promoted. It means also that the country has no competitive advantage in the international market/business world.
