. Traders from the South-East geo-political zone have disowned the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu and his cohorts in the pro-Biafran agitation. The traders under the auspices of ‘South East Markets Amalgamated Traders Association, in a statement made available to journalists in Awka on Tuesday, said traders in the area had nothing to do with the Movement for the Actualisation of Biafra and the Indigenous People of Biafra, headed by Kanu. The IPOB is a splinter group from MASSOB. The traders’ statement was signed by their President and the Secretary, Okwudili Ezenwankwo and Temple Udeh respectively. They said that their position on the issue had become necessary because of frequent calls by the secessionist groups for closure of markets in the area, stressing that the public could be deceived by such calls into believing that traders were involved in the lawless struggle. The statement read, “We are constrained to react to the continuous calls for close of businesses in the zone in protest and solidarity for Biafra. “Traders in the South-East wish to dissociate ourselves from MASSOB and IPOB. We have nothing to do whatsoever with these lawless groups. “The difficulties and hardship, which traders and residents in general suffer during these protests, had made the traders to react to the situation and the development and make its position very clear and unambiguous. “The invasion of markets and other business outfits and the destruction of property of individuals like shops and vehicles in the name of pro-Biafra protest is not only condemnable but unacceptable. “We are yet to understand the wisdom in the protest where the properties and other valuables and belongings of the Igbo are either vandalised or destroyed by fellow Igbo in the name of Pro- Biafra protest. “The hardship, which the Igbo that relocated from the North-East in the wake of Boko Haram insurgency are passing through, is still staring every right thinking Igbo man in the face, yet the Pro-Biafra groups are calling other Igbo doing their businesses in other parts of Nigeria to relocate to the South-East. This doesn’t make any sense. “No particular zone in this country is an island and none can successfully develop without inter- relationship with the others. .“Times are hard and the traders condemn, in strong terms, any action, by any group or individual, that will further aggravate the already very difficult times experienced by traders in this area. “The traders are totally not in support of any protest that will further adversely affect the people of the South-East. “We want to state clearly that traders in the South East are solidly in support of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.” The statement stressed that “traders in the zone shall not support any action that will aggravate the hardship already being experienced by Nigerians”. They appealed to the President to address the issue of dilapidated federal infrastructure in the South East, particularly the federal roads in the zone, which they described as death traps. They listed the bad roads in the zone to include the Enugu Onitsha Expressway, Enugu¬Abakaliki Expressway, Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, Aba-Owerri Road and Owerri-Port Harcourt Road.

Igbos don't joke with their businesses, telling them to close down their shops are you going to help them take care of their responsibilities?

For every agitation of this nature to succeed, most key stakeholders of value must be identified, consulted and carried along, traders inclusive.

The continuous dissociation of known Pro-Igbo groups will be a key setback for IPOB. I think more planning is required by the IPOB team.

At the end of this melee, Nnamdi Kanu if proven innocent would have made his voice heard and perhaps learn lesons on the apt approach to realize his dreams for Biafra. He may constitute a new political party to win all subsequent elections in the SE to make the consultation process easier. Afterwards, collectively, those in favor of Biafra can drive their intents and purposes within the ambits of the constitution.

I still strongly feel 2017 to 2020 which will mark 50 years of the Biafra struggle will be significant with notable events.

A movement is bound to fail when elders and leaders do not consent to it.

Below are a list of prominent Igbos who have come out to condemn the biafra agitation.

Father Mbaka

"Fr. Mbaka had during
last Saturday sermon
at his Adoration
Ministry condemned
the recent agitation
and protests for Biafra
nation describing the
action as `evil.’'

Gov Okorocha

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has
condemned the pro-Biafra protests in
Anambra, Rivers and Delta states.
The protests were against the arrest of the
director of Biafra Radio, Nnamdi Kanu.
Okorocha said the protest or any other activity
of the separatist group did not have the
backing of any Igbo leader or the Southeast
governors.

Obi of Onitsha

The paramount ruler and Obi of Onitsha in Anambra State, Igwe Alfred Achebe, has condemned the widespread protests by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who are calling for the separation of the entire south-east region from Nigeria.

According to him, the south-east remained an
integral part of Nigeria and the leaders from the
area so much believed in the unity of the country
and would always work towards sustaining such bond.

The Igbo Conscience (TIC)

The Igbo Conscience (TIC), led by Barrister Monday Ubani, a former Chairman of the Ikeja Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, has dismissed the clamour for Biafra, asserting that the Igbo are better off in Nigeria.

“While it is possible for any Yoruba man or woman from any state in the South West to serve in any capacity in Lagos it is extremely
difficult if not impossible for an Igbo from one Igbo state to work in another Igbo state.”

TIC blamed the Biafra clamour on some “economic refugees” living in Europe and America who engage in it as a way of mitigating the harsh economic realities in Nigeria.

Ohanaeze

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, the
Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has described recent protests by Pro-Biafra agitators in some parts of the country, as madness, saying Biafra died 45 years ago when General Philip Effiong surrendered to the Nigerian troops.”

As I've always said it, Biafra is dear to so many of us but some people would think their idea is the best and wouldn't want to carry others along.
I expect serious name calling today on the president, remember it was same president of SEAMATA that wanted markets all closed in july to protest the Boko Haram prisoners in Ekwulobia and traders complied in the south east.

See this fifth columnist!

The problem i have with people like the OP -who claim to be Igbo as they try weakening our resolve and cause dissention in the ranks- is that they never profer any viable alternative! We have tried to go down the route of having a round-table discussion....guess where that got us! Every solution brought up is crumpled up and chucked in the dustbin with breathtaking arrogance by the 'owners of Nigeria', so tell me what alternative solution is left?

These fools -many of whom were born and are living in Lagos and the north- can't seem to grasp the enormity of the destruction Nigeria has caused to Ndigbo and Alaigbo! They are the weakest link in our defense because they also don't realize just how much they're hated and viewed with suspicion.....mainly by some of the Hausa/Fulani and Yoruba ethnic stock! It's these same fools that will be first to be hunted down, with their lives cut short and properties stolen....all for 'one Nigeria'!

Unlike the likes of Zik and Ikemba, never again will i underestimate the level of hatred these people have for Igbos!

One Nigeria can go to hell!!!

They have insulted their Obi, condemned Fr. Mbaka, disowned Ohaneze, ridiculed Okorocha and dismissed the SS elders who have condemned the agitation.

Now the traders have spoken and they've been put in the crosshairs. Yet the iPod rioters think they'd win a referendum?

At what point will these people search within and examine themselves instead of labeling everyone else out of frustration? The other guy that quoted me just labeled me Yoruba for speaking the truth grin

Common sense gradually returning to the people affected by IPOB the most.
I have always wondered why traders and other concerned seasterners kept silent while IPOB persistently forced the closure of markets and other bizs, in the process further causing severe hardship for the mainly biz oriented/trading region.
I have also maintained that Kanu and IPOB are a scam and a tool by disgruntled politicians and the one true way to find out the true support base of the group is for them to go out, carry on their match without forcing closure of markets and see how many traders there will be ready to voluntarily close their shops to march in favor of a group whose arrowhead already addresses himself a leader, simply because he broadcasts on a radio station and so calls himself.

The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has recently released the 2011 unemployment data which reveals a wide dichotomy between states in the North and those in the southern part of the country.

According to the released data, the bottom ten in the jobless list are; Zamfara State with 42.6%; Bauchi, 41.4%; Niger, 39.4%; Gombe, 38.7%; Nasarawa, 36.5%, Jigawa, 35.9%; Edo, 35.7%; Yobe, 35.6%; Adamawa, 33.8%, and Kaduna with 30.3%.

Let's assume they're touts and they're jobless(according to you)
It means the govt has really failed woefully in engaging the youths, hence the protest. What has the govt done to help them?
So either way, the govt has not done enough in job creation. Agree?
