Of course the minister wields his powers in the 'senate' just like the minister wield her power in her 'ministry'. You can't talk about a senator without involving the senate.

Forget the rascality we are practicing in Nigeria. The senate has the power to summon anyone, even the president.

Wake up..they are not the same.

The minister is the all in all chief executive of the ministries and all agencies under him. The senator is only a discussant in the senate.

You can make assumptions about senators writing letters of referrals to ministers hoping for recognition and contracts, BUT you have no proof of that!

CACAWA:
lol funny...do you know how many senators write letters of referrals to ministers hoping for recognition and contracts for their keens?

One minister alone keeps in regular touch and buys the loyalty of more than 60% of the senators who are in fact, businessmen

CACAWA:
all the stuffs you wrote is about the powers of the senate and not a single senator. No single senator can call a minister to order...ask yourself what happened to Amaechi who many senators stood against? He wasn't even a minister then. A single senator is just a normal public servant...

And if you forcibly and wrongly want to ascribe the power of the entire senate to just one senator, then you can also add that because constituency can recall a senator, then it means the groundnut seller in his constituency is more powerful than a senator.

You can't take away the senator from the senate. The senator wields his power in the 'senate'. Without the senate, the senator is just like every other Nigerian. The teacher wields her power in the 'school' just like lalasticala wield his power on nairaland. The individuals make up the institutions and are inseparable.

The same senate that has to give approval before a ministerial nominee can become a minister can also remove a minister just like the senate can impeach a president... go and read the constitution properly...

Senators would not just remove a minister because he called them a house of rascals, they are not that "sensitive".

I know what I am talking about.

no you don't.

You are still talking about the senate as a body. We are talking about a single senator. For example, the senators from rivers state alone have no power over Amaechi today. They couldn't even stop his nomination and they also can never remove him.

Even the senate you are talking about...for example, the senate has power to confirm an INEC chairman, they have no powers to remove him.

Same rule applies to ministers...but in this case, only the president can fire a minister.

Ask yourself...what did the senate do about for aviation minister...stella odua?

They advised the president to fire her. He didn't.

That's all the senate can do...talkies of one single senator that no can't get majority of his colleagues. Lol

It depends ,a senator can be recalled by his/her constituency,a minister can be sacked..... If you are A or B and people aren't feeling the impact of your position, you as good as dead.........in Tubaba voice ........power is nothing if it's only to your advantage, people wallowing in abject poverty and fear ..

To me the most powerful men are those that touches lives and changes destinies for good and posterity always speak good of them

not even the entire senate can scrap a ministry. Only the president can create or scrap ministry. A ministry is only a department in the executive..it has nothing to do with the senate..talkless of one senator

i beg to disagree sir! in a corrupt country like ours a senator might be constitutionally more powerful than a minister (especially when he is in the midst of other senators) but financially a senator and a minister are not in the same league.......imagine how much these ministries get as allocation on monthly basis
well i stil maintain that a senator is more powerful than a minister

This question is f**king immature. Who compares an elected government official with an appointed one that can sacked any day? U can as well ask if a minister is more powerful than an Executive Governor!!

Re: Who Is More Powerful...a Minister And A Senator??? by Nobody: 2:58pm On Nov 28, 2015
Now, quote the exact section in the constitution where it says that senators have no powers to remove a minister?... it does not exist!

Just like the senate can kick out a president (who appoints a minister), the same power from the senate can kick out and incompetent or erring minister.

You cannot talk of a broomstick without mentioning the broom... so you just cannot talk of senator without mentioning the senate.

A senator is a broomstick... The senate is the broom and a minister is a chewing stick.

It depends.
A senator is only more powerful where the power intended to be exercised is collective. The Senate (as a body/group) is more powerful than the Executive. Thus, the President is more powerful than the Senate President and a Minister is more powerful than a Senator.

a local govt chairman was also elected, so what is your point?

A minister is more powerful than a senator. A minister represents the president. His opinion makes impact, while a senator needs to team up with majority of his colleagues to make anymeaningfulimpact.

A minister is at par with a state governor...a minister controls several agencies of govt and can determine how much of federal presence any state would feel. Many state governors have to seek approval from ministers before downing any project. For example, to build a road anywhere, you need approval from ministry of environment, ministry of housing, ministry of works and ministry of lands. If a finance minister says NO, you can't even collect state loans. Who controls CBN?

A state has three senators, just one governor, and just one minister.

A minister also controls financial power...all a senator has is his salary and allowance.

Finally, a minister is a principal member of the executive while a senator may not even be a principal member of the senate.

QED
ur first paragraph tho...

talk of a local govt chairman, he can b elected or appointed as a "care taker". ur comparison is ridiculous cos u trying to make a point...

bak to d topic; I think a senator is more powerful...even d president need dem to make some appointments if not all..

the senators can summon because they are constitutionally backed, but the minister decides where projects are cited

also when both of them attends a public function, the ministers name gets mentioned before the senator, except the senator is the SP or DSP

The question was about the individualistic powers each possesses, and not a collective power... In the Senate, no matter how excellent your motion is, the gavel will still have the final say..

Did you actually notice how concerned we were when PMB was yet to begin the ministerial appointment exercise? The country was seriously grounded. All we were acting on was Buhari's body language.
I reiterate, the question was individualistic.

Individually a wolf's bite force is just a little bit higher than that of a rottweiler dog BUT a wolf is usually a member of pack... this is just like a senator and the senate.... individually a senator is not so powerful, but when he gets the backing of the senate, a minister is in deep sh.it.
