But why should a science or engineering student who had grade A and Bs in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Agricultural Science/Geography be denied admission because of a failure or a pass in English Language?

Did he write those subjects in Vernacular?
I wonder ooo

The more reason he should pass it since he wrote the rest in English. All schools should just accept two sittings except of course MED students.

Some fools who think that they are wise or educated will condem him but if i may say please ask any of your uncle's or aunty who schooled in the 80s, early 90s if it was compulsory and then compare the standard of education then with now it will simply tell you that these subjects made compulsory adds little or nothing to our educational system

Good.

Writing science in vernacular (native language) is actually how it's supposed to be. That's how Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Russians, e.t.c do it. English language should be banned entirely in African schools, instead credit should be required on our native languages in exchange. Only students interested in studying English should study English. That's how Asians do it!.

English language is not a standard for learning!.

Rochas-Okorocha

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has requested universities in the country and other institutions of higher learning to stop making credit passes in English language and Mathematics compulsory for those seeking admission.

He lamented that the practice of making the two subjects compulsory for admissions has aborted the ambition of many brilliant students who could, for one reason or the other, not credit both subjects, to further their education.

The Governor, who spoke yesterday when the Registrar of the National Examination Council, NECO, Prof. Abdulrashid Garba visited him at the Government House Owerri, with his team, noted that the time has come for all relevant bodies to help the education sector and assist students with the ambition of pursuing higher education.

That will make majority of the students to pay very unserious attention to their studies, knowing fully well that English Language and Mathematics are no longer pre-requisite for admission requirements
....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

They have Colleges of Education, Polytechnics, National Teachers Institute, National Open University of Nigeria with several branches scattered all over the Country. Besides, they also have the choice of writing over and over again, if they must go to the University.gringrin

English is no measure of intelligence nor does wisdom /knowledge increases by understanding of English Language.

Most great artisans and technicians out there can't even pass English language but they deliver perfectly in their field of endeavours than their university counterparts.

Language serves only communication and interaction hence its perfection should not be over emphazied.

Not everyone. English Test was waived for me personally. I got admission in Australia after a telephone conversation with the School Admission Officer. Infact, she asked if I was an American. cheesy

You mean a person who fails English languade in WAEC cannot write, understand or communicate in English? This is a lie.

Some people have eight "A"s and a pass in English and yet are denied admission even with their high Jamb scores.

Failing mathematics is not a hinderance to being a successful businessmen in most markets across Nigeria

listen well to okorocha, he said, English and Maths. That is, an Engineering or Mathematics student do not need to get maths to enter school. Engine my foot. Who is asking too much for a science student, all he is expected to get is C6 which is barely 50% methink. Moreover this governor who is the only one without a degree is asking for such.
