jayfolarin:Forget it!!! As one with an economics background I dare say that this plan is a disaster!!!!! All West African countries are commodity based countries e.g. Nigeria -Oil, Ghana- Oil and Cocoa, Niger - Uranium and the rest. These commodities are volatile in nature, and when the price of one of these commodities fall, under a common currency, the entire region is in hot peppersoup. Look at what is happening to Nigeria, oil prices have fallen, and our currency has taken a serious hit. If Nigeria shared a common currency with the rest of west Africa, you see that Nigeria would have dragged the currency, as well as other countries down. Again, for a common currency to work, there has to be a hifg volume of intra west African trade. Do you know that intra regional trade in Africa accounts for only about 10% of total trade? Why then do you need a common currency? Lastly, fiscal indiscipline is rife in west Africa, the biggest culprits being Nigeria, Ghana and Sierra Leone. Under this condition you try implementing a common currency, you have set yourself up for disaster. The EU these people want to imitate are very different from them. |

free2ryhme:No, you are wrong. First of all, you dont understand the economic structure of Europe. What happened was bound to happen because there was significant gap between the countries that started the Euro Zone Currency. Apart from Ireland which was included due to political freedom from the United Kingdom, all the other countries that started the Euro currency were Western European countries. There were Eastern European countries that wanted to join but were told to wait. They are currently being integrated one after the other. Germany was the powerhouse, followed by France, Holland, Italy, Austria, Belgium and down to the poorest among them. Portugal, Greece and Even Spain were not that rich. Germany had to carry them along which meant that they needed time to stabilize. Euro is never on a free fall, its one of the most stable currencies in the World. It is your currency Naira that is on a free fall. Now lets come to West Africa. This is the best time to merge because no country among us can boast of being significantly better than the rest. We are all poor and will remain poor for some time to come. It is better that we start now and blend along the way. The moment any one country in West Africa grows up to the standard of living of South Africa, Tunisia, Morocco or Egypt, it will be difficult to convince the country to join the same currency bandwagon. |

When will Africa stop copy and paste? Is common currency economic threat facing us now? Even EU we are trying to copy is having issues with their currency. Africa look inward and develop a true path for your advancement! |

I'm 99% confident, it will not work. They should rather intensify their focus on deepening trade ties rather than some unrealistic wishy-washy mantra. |
