Hi Guys,

I would like to get some useful advice on a tour i'm embarking on in a few days from Lagos to Enugu. I have never drove through this route, there is always a first time for everything. I intend to get some ideas on what to expect on the road.

The funny thing is this, I do not know the route from Festac Lagos to Enugu but i'm sure its not rocket science. I am embarking on this tour in a 1.8Litre engine full speed automatic.

I would like advice on how to connect routes, possible witches and wizards on the route and how to avoid them .

Easy Route . road not that bad now

When u get to Benin by-pass be careful not to continue on the warri-sapele route, turn at some place to Agbor - asaba route.

Beware of Ore boys, dont give them ur car to fix , car go spoil pass as e be b4. If them throw stone for ur windscreen or If ur tyre match nail, no stop for that spot, ensure u get to d nearest town where pple are b4 u stop.

Fulani headsmen na armed robbers for that route oo... Begin ur journey early

Its more or less a direct route..find your way from lagos via berger and hit shagamu and then on to ijebuode (beware of pot holes and rampant lane changes/flash holdups and right on to ore..(take note of the boiz at ore)

Navigate to benin bypass and connect to benin onitsha express...then on to asaba and onitsha...from onitsha to awka (beware of single lanes and very bad now dusty portions)


Now take very good attention to this...shortly after you pass awka and get to Nnamdi Azikiwe university main gate.. take the first turning on your right( landmark is a number of suya,rams and oranges sellers) to connect you to the old enugu- awka -onitsha road. This road is much better than the federal road that goes on straight.

It takes you through the rolling hills of oji river and udi( where the immediate past governor of enugu hails from and beware of sharp bends)

As you go along u can as well ask directions and also use your mobile maps to give you a heads up.


You should do just fine..


Ehenn..abeg if you are using a recently registerd car pls and pls dot all your I's and T's as regards your documents. Same goes for tinted permit if your car is tinted. Or else...you know na...

Fact. Make sure you heed to this advice. You will regret following the federal road.

Once you get to benin bypass, make sure you don't stop for any human being, whether police, mechanic, agbero,etc. infact increase your speed when you get there. Also don't make the mistake of continuing to Warri - Sapele road.

You come down after the second bridge at the benin bypass. You notice they sell one popular bread at the foot of the bridge. Straight down is Asaba

@oblo what about taking the old road from Onitsha. The federal road from Onitsha was be bad last time I passed through the road January 2015.

Thanks guys, I looked up a map from Festac to Berger. It came up with Ojodu Berger.

Here is a picture of what the route looks like from Festac via Surulere. Is it the best route to go from A to B?

Well I don't know the advice I will give much, since I don't know the direction but your journey is 563km I made a 1000km plus journey with a 1.5L engine, your 1.8L engine should handle the journey but, there must be trust betwEen driver and vehicle, know what your vehicle can handle and what it cant.

be careful on our express roads, they are filled with craters and death traps. Have extra tyre and fluids just in case, people who have made the journey said don't pickup strangers, better follow their words in order not to fall into the wrong hands.

Every 150-200km please stop at a filling station and check all fluids, radiator fan, tyres and rim also under the vehicle to find out if there is fluid leak or parts falling off.

The most important is you need a personal sketch map with landmarks showing you where and when to turn and you need to study it well. Checking map on the express in motion is dangerous so is stopping at no man's land, thugs can creep up.

I will adopt all the measures necessary to ensure my car is on top notch, fluid level at intervals, tyres etc. I can't wait to embark on this epic journey in 007 style. There is a trophy waiting for me on the other side 007 style.

I intend to get brand new tyres but the risk of buying chinco tyres and price is something to consider, the old tyres still look sound, i guess there is a way to check if that can handle the task. What do you think>

Lots of changes on that road since January 2015....That old road route from onitsha na long tin now o....the federal road from onitsha to awka is not as bad again as the dry season is here...infact its a sweet stretch of asphalt right from the iconic Niger bridge till you get to Umunya and as at yesterday when I passed by on my way back from abeokuta they had started some "work" specifically on the Umunya bad section( am.sure that's where you are refering to) till you get to Awkuzu then double lanes till you get to Awka (some construction work still ongoing so watch out for diversions.... some.other sections of the road have been fixed or rather should I say patched

From my experience if your tyres have cracks and or bumps on the side wall it would be a good idea to change. I your tyres are worn out merely looking at the treads ....change. Your tyres would sure take a serious pounding on this journey. Please avoid craters as much as you can as Nurey also stated. Your tyres would thank you later.

I will post later a picture of what playing with fire aka pothole did to almost brand new tires, I brought it home as a constant reminder not to joke with such a powerful enemy

If pothole did that to me, what will craters do to you? craters will wreck not just tires, but undercarriage and suspension, you don't want to turn a trip into a major repair bill or do you?

whether you buy brand new tyres or tokunbo tyres please avoid craters as mush as possible, they damage tyres and rims. Just ensure that the tyre you buy is your cars specification as in 195/65R15 and ensure you maintain the recommended PSI, you should be fine. Never let your guard down or loss focus while driving and be vigilant, the sun hides craters.

During my driving, I learned somethings I will share with you, I always follow cars that are not to fast for me, it helps you avoid what they can't. I always use my side mirrors and allow cars faster than me pass quickly cause there would be instances where you will swerve from one lane to another you don't want to swerve into incoming car.
Never race with any driver it's not worth it, one of you is bound to get hurt. Never over take in corners and uphill, am sure your 1.8L isn't turbo charged we have wicked and insane drivers abound also speed demons.

Please if you using water in radiator, then you are inviting overheating/engine failure which can be catastrophic. Go the coolant way, with 2500 total coolant will do wonders for you. If you intend to drive @ night (which I vote against) please ensure your beams are in top shape and never surpass 80km/h cause oncoming drivers will blind you and death traps could also be abound.

I noted your initial comment and the later comment, i guess you advice the federal road is now a better option as you used it yesterday compared to the old road from Onitsha to Awka due to dry season. If the Federal road is in better state, then it will be a long stretch to Enugu without cutting through the old road. I am taking note of all the points and really appreciate your contributions.

I appreciate your contributions, you have made points that i would have taken for granted like the coolant instead of water in the radiator. The craters you refer to are particles of stone left by untidy construction workers on roads i presume ?

I will guage the tyre PSI readings before i commence, my car surprisingly is turbo charged with a click of a button. I was surprised when i bought the car, the turbo button makes the car go faster while on speed. The turbo no be Ferarri style turbo lol.

Nooooo. The federal road is OK till you reach Awka. Then on you divert to the old road. On no acount shud you continue on the federal road AFTER Awka.

Oblo has shown you what a crater could look like, but Nigerian road craters are very deadly, I have experienced one and the way they bend rims and burst tyre is deadly. If one is extremely unlucky, you could loss a whole leg (identical to honda leg pull) or destroy your oil pan or something delicate underneath the car.

But I have a question to ask, the only Avensis that is turbo charged is the 2.2 D4D model as in a turbo charged diesel engine. So I haven't seen a 1.8L turbo charged version, so what engine variant are you using and a pix of the trophy Racer would be nice.

Nigerian roads is filled with massive craters in major roads, I will thoroughly inspect my tyres again and make any necessary changes.
