11. Picture what you read: it's easier to remember a picture than words, picture what you read and you'll get a better understanding that will last longer. |

Oliviaarims:Reading doesn't come easy to some people o. There are some people who fall asleep as soon as they pick up a textbook. My advice is, develop a genuine interest in the topic. Read it casually at first, finding some areas that may interest you, then, it'll be easy to study it. When I was in year 2, I picked up a year 4 textbook and I found myself more interested in it than in my very own textbook. Because I was in so much tension with my own textbook, I couldn't concentrate. So my best bet is reading casually to develop an interest. |

it varies for me I read in a noisy place or I use an earpiece reading with a jotter is a big YES... try to create short codes as reminders example MR NIGER D (omo it helps I swear) just in d midst of a good gist or play try asking yourself a question as regards a topic taught and if u can't answer it it simply means you need to study... try to explain what you have studied to another person you are better than in your own understanding then walk up to someone better than you and do same and assess yourself with their correction |

Trixxxy:Yea. I understand that reading school books isn't sth we relish most times.. And some courses are just annoying and seemingly difficult. But as a student, reading is almost compulsory. So, through the years, one must have learnt how to read and to discover what works for him. |

11. Immerse yourself in what you study. This is the only advantage agricultural and vocational-based studies have over theory based courses. Students here learn ICT knowledge without ever seeing a computer. A situation of this sort results in half-baked graduates as even the best student would get run in circles by someone with a decent amount of exposure to the topic coupled with a laptop for practicals. The whiteman always ensures most students're heavily immersed in an environment which aids learning of a new skill. During my masters we had the option to spend the study period working with a real life organization in order to practically learn how a working environment operates - it reflected well into our studies. |

Explain what you have read to a friend: Most scholars would agree with me that reading a book and keeping it to yourself makes you not to really grasp the full understanding, but when you try to explain and teach a fellow friend you discover that what you've read would start making more sense to you and to add to that you would never forget it again. |

Your thread does not strictly refer to reading strategies but to learning strategies in general. author=Mediapace post=41569233]Most students have been complaining that they fail these and that, even to the extent that 47% was recorded for pass grade at the just concluded G.C.E. WAEC,Our guidelines will help you to read and understand.Yes! Concentration is very important so create a proper setting to do your work by removing distractions and creating a supportive atmosphere. 2.Take A respite:- An adage says "All work and no play makes jack a dull boy". After reading for like 45 to 60mins,take a respite and relax, don't over use your memory by reading for 6hrs without stopping. USE YOUR Brain wisely. When you relax for about 15mins,come back fresh and excited. It it is important that students learn to organize themselves effectively. Time and resources management should be a priority. The preparation for exams should be planned and a time frame should be set. Do not wait till the very last day or week until you begin with the preparations. Develop a schedule and stick to it. Your brain needs time and repetition to process new information and to store the old. 3.Summarize what you read:Here we go. There are plenty of reading and learning strategies that can facilitate the understanding and memorizing process. Summarizing what you read can be very effective but the problem is that many students do not know how to summarize a text and how to distinguish between the gist and irrelevant details. Depending on the subject of a text it may be helpful to answer the 5 w-questions (who? what? when? where? why?) to summarize the text. If the text is a non-fictional piece of writing that explains cause and effect, it could be helpful to make a flow chart to visualize the information and facilitate the understanding and memorizing process. By visualizing complex cause and effect relationships, you figure out if you truly understood the text by re-organizing the information of a particular text. Since the process requires your active and conscious effort, you do not only make sure that you understand it but also help your brain to memorize it. "Tell me and I will forget. Show me and I will remember. Involve me and I will understand". (Confucius) This is an example of a flow chart: https://www.cbsd.org/cms/lib010/PA01916442/Centricity/Domain/1844/Biology%20Flowcharts/Flowchart%20-%20DNA.jpg Read at the best time easy for you , God created us in different ways but thesame patterns,Management of time and resources again. 5.If possible, read in groups:I have done it too when I was a student. I studied alone at times and with other students at other times. Sometimes we would test each other and make a competition out of it. It used to be fun. 6.Use Dictionaries when reading :Online dictionaries are very fast but be careful not to get distracted by NL or Facebook. ![]() 7.Ask yourself questions on what you read after reading :In a first step, brainstorm everything you know about a subject. It will help you see how much you remember. In the second step, organize the information in a mindmap in order to structure it. Then use these mind maps to look at them again and again and at the end you will have a mental picture of what you needed to know in a very clear and structured way. Violà! You can also record what you need to know on your phone and listen to it when chilling out. Some people are more visual and some others are more auditory. It is probably best to engage as many of your senses as possible in order to feed your brain with what you need to know and in order for your brain to store the information in the long-term memory. 8.Create the habit of reading at least twice a a day :Organization and time-management again. 9.Don't be forced to read :The most successful students are those who enjoy learning and developing. ![]() 10 Scholars,Share your experience with us tøo |

11. Don't read with empty stomach Sometimes the body needs to be well fed before one reading. The reason being that the moment you are hungry, it becomes a distraction hence you won't assimilate any further. So it's wise to be filled before going to read. Mediapace: |

Mediapace:Very good topic. I am what you'd call a professional crammer. We usually have yearly competitions in my organization to see who knows our doctrines best and i've won quite a few. From my experience, i've found that it is always helpful to; 1. Study at every opportunity you have; People always claim there's not enough time for them to study. I call bullshit on that one. There's always time. Every time you are playing video games, chasing a girl or guy, watching tv, drinking beer, partying, etc, that time can be allocated to developing your mind. 2. Study to the point of exhaustion; When you read and read a particular subject and let's say you fall asleep doing it, when you wake up, don't just get up. Try and remember what you read before you fell asleep. Whatever you remember at that point, chances are it will stay in your memory for a long time. 3. Use the human resource you have; My wife usually get's annoyed whenever i have a competition coming up. She already know's what the deal is. I always use her as a questionnaire. She would sit with me for hours with one of our regulations and ask me questions over and over again. 4. Get mp3's of whatever you want to learn; Ever wondered how you can remember dozens of songs for years? Well the same principle can be applied to studying. I usually record what i want to learn on my phone and just listen to it over and over again. Hope this helps someone. |

I think anyone who's interested in studying should first do what makes his/her brain calm... For me It's either I read the Quran or visit nairaland minutes before I start. |

In addition, these are some psychological tips that had also helped me to study while in school. Try to study at the exact venue of the exam, if possible. Study to undestand not memorize. Study again at most two- one hour to ur exam. Avoid studying in diffirent locations for a particular subject. After studying regorously, relieve yourself of stress by engaging in some sporting activities. Map out particular convenient time(s) to study. Mine was 4pm and 1am. Finaly, "study like its up to u and pray like its up to God." |
