Good day

I would advise you continue with the Food Engineering as you have just three years left. You're 19,meaning at MOST, you'd finish aged 23. If you write another JAMB coupled with admission wahala, you could graduate at the of 24. With the incessant strikes and NYSC, you might enter the labour market aged 26/27. .


My advice:

Finish the Food Engineering with at least a 2.1, save money for professional courses like CCNA and a couple of others in the computer world, learn programming, ethical hacking, keep tabs with activities in Silicon Valley. My own case is quite similar;intend becoming an Investment Banker but I'm studying Genetics and Biotechnology (200 level second semester). I know what to do, finish with a First Class (currently on it) then apply directly to Investment banking corporations.

Moreover, you can finish with your degree in Food Engineering and apply to consulting firms in the technology sub-sector, Accenture and Capgemini ring bells. For more in depth analysis, visit Jarushub.

First, you need to make sure what you feel for Comp Sci. is not a passing thing. You love it today, will you love it tomorrow? Also the field is very broad and you need to figure out what area interests you.
Also, getting a degree in Comp Sci is not so important if you want to make a future in the field. Your focus should be on getting certifications, training and improving your skill set.
But, whatever you do, don't leave your current program until you have started a new one

Chemical Engineering is more profitable(Richard Quest's voice). The world is going green, climate friendly jobs would be appreciated more in the future. Chemical Engineering is broader, more applicable in any sector; from pharmaceuticals to FMCG, oil and gas(36$ per barrel ATM), to manufacturing etc.

You could also undergo a masters program later when you have gotten wider industry experience in some of the best colleges of engineering, be it in the UK, United States, Singapore, Korea or Japan. There're a 1000 and 1 firms to work for with your degree in Chemical Engineering than Geophysics, this is very much important during your internship placement.

In conclusion, it's in your court. Play it well academically and soft-skills wise, and success would be yours.

I have always wanted to be a pharmacist because

1) that's what my dad want because his elder brother who happens to be my uncle is also a pharmacist and currently a multimillionaire.

Am physically challenged ( A leg disfunction as a result of polio) and have been using Crutches since I was 4 years. I believe being a pharmacist will make my life easier coz all I have to do is prescribe and sell drugs. I graduated from secondary school in 2011 at an early age of 16 and spend 2 more years in getting my O'level result at one sitting with 4B(eng, math, eco, nd geography) and the rest C4. I applied for Jamb in 2013 but got 186. Despirate to get into any higher institution coz am tired of staying at home, I did polythecnic of Ibadan p-utme and passed excellently and was admitted into Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) department. I dont want to do HND at all so, Before the end of my programme, I decided to apply for Jamb again and Chose UI since it's closer to Polybadan nd I did my siwes there. So, I chose pharmacy and when jamb result was out, I scored 215 while my other colleagues scored, 234, 225, 219, my roomate whom also chose pharmacy scored 263. Suddenly, I felt the urge to change my course coz i was afraid of the cut-off mark nd knwing UI fully well that failure to meet up with the required mark is no admission and again my dad told me this is the last jamb he will pay for and if I fail to make it to university, am on my own. I change to Industrial Chemistry since I was told it's the best in faculty of science with a lot of Job prospects. When p-utme result was out, I performed well and infact, my score was the same with dentistry and physiotherapy but 2 marks behind pharmacy. Out of more than 20 student in my class that wrote UI p-utme, only 6 were admitted. 2 into pharmacy (including the guy dat got 263), one into Mls, one into Biochem, one into chemistry and I into ICH. To cut the long story short, I am just newly admitted to Industrial Chemistry. My family love the course, even my uncle who owns a pharmacist store in America said the course is very lovely and said no doubt, a good grade will guarantee me a better life. Now, to those in the Job sector, considering my condition, please, should I continue with this course or apply for jamb and go into the medical line.... My aim initially was to get admitted into this course and then, apply for another jamb to study pharmacy/dentist

My question goes thus,

Academically, there exists little differences between Pharmacy and Industrial Chemistry; you write the same chemical formulas, compounds, if needed cram the crambles. Only difference is you apply the chemistry(pharmacy is mainly about chemistry than biology) in Pharmacy to the human body, while the other is applied in the industry. An industrial chemist can work in the pharmaceutical industry even though I concede a pharmacist is given more access, privilege and respect.

3) C'mon, don't you want to enjoy life when your mates are? You'd be above, maximum 35 years old. Haba!! !!. Unless, you intend becoming a researcher(which I'd say go overseas), I don't see the point.

There're job prospects in industrial chemistry in Nigeria. With a population of over 180 million people and Africa being the next frontier. Firms in every sector is or wants to invest in Africa, job opportunities would certainly be available.
All people just need is to be ready, prepared and grab every opportunity that springs forth.

To further aid your career in the future, I would advise you start learning a foreign language preferably Spanish (if at the end your uncle decides to bring you to the states). You could visit Jarushub to give a more detailed analysis.

I have been a silent observer (though learnt alot from this thread). The problem here isn't really about you studying ICH or pharmacy, it's really about your fear of the future (which is quite understandable), but you've gotta develop lots of guts to make the future go down on its knees for you.

I'm still an undergraduate myself, but you have to believe you have what it takes to do well in your chosen field no matter What the current situation is (you sound quite intelligent). Lastly you have to find something you have passion for (something you could do with all commitment even though you are not paid), cos that's really what would make you go places and not your course. Finish well in ICH and the sky would be your beginning.

Come to think of it, Steve jobs never graduated (my inspiration)

I am not sure you can do a DE to Medicine with a first degree in Geography. They are 2 dissimilar courses. Students of Medicine and Geography don't take the same courses in the 100 and 200 level. I am not sure it will be accepted in any school. If he is hell bent on studying medicine, let him write another JAMB and start afresh.
