RobinHez:Uwc sir RobinHez:Its ur blog, so I don't know how exactly u'd want d article 2 look like. Don't know if u want 2 use part or whole of it. So that's ur call. U can reproduce d whole of it if u like. Just include d source (nairaland link) and d author (Chokolateboss). Daz all RobinHez:Since its a science blog, will definitely visit. |

Blakjewelry:Yes they do. Although this field of computing is still largely unexplored, I think an early adoption of the technology can give Google a large advantage in many tech areas: its search engine will improve more; its self-driving cars will have better performance at image processing and recognition of objects; its maps service can be extended in ways we've not thought of. And the whole field of IT will be transformed as other companies adopt the technology. Imagine how disruptive this, together with the new network technologies (5G and LiFi), can be. |

Craigston:Disruptive? How do u mean? |
Re: Mankind's Scientific Breakthroughs Of The Year 2015 You Should Know Of by Blakjewelry(m): 12:21am On Jan 05, 2016 |
Craigston:The only part I fear about some of these tech is that they have the ability to give machine an edge over man in the future. Except we merge man machine in the future man is doom. But the thrill of what we can achieve is like a drug, it is addictive |
Re: Mankind's Scientific Breakthroughs Of The Year 2015 You Should Know Of by Craigston: 8:47pm On Jan 05, 2016 |
ChokolateBoss:I say disruptive not in a literal way. Consider the subsequent advances such technologies could bring in several sectors such as banking and finance, crime detection and investigation, engineering, population control, agriculture, defense, transport, medicine, town planning, education and other sectors. Imagine an architect being able to produce a full design in a very short time by feeding a few variables to a computer and have an AI produce a beautiful and standards-compliant design. Consider how data could be analyzed at greater speeds and solutions to problems gotten fast. It's really disruptive. |

Blakjewelry:The politicians are our fear, not the technologies. If our politicians can think with the people in view, the world would be safer. |
Re: Mankind's Scientific Breakthroughs Of The Year 2015 You Should Know Of by Blakjewelry(m): 9:43pm On Jan 05, 2016 |
Craigston:Though you are right to a large extent, but what am seriously considering is what if our own creation in the future turn against us, you might be surprised that in the nearest future there might be fairy tales of how the gods made the machines lol. Do you know that a lot of work is being done on artificial consciousness or machine consciousness? Though it is kinda cool but it is a little bit weird 1 Like |
Re: Mankind's Scientific Breakthroughs Of The Year 2015 You Should Know Of by Craigston: 10:23pm On Jan 05, 2016 |
Blakjewelry:That's exactly what I fear. Such consciousness are within the bounds of our algorithms. They have no soul and we cannot give them one. We can only make them behave in certain ways, but I fear those behaviours may not be what is ideal for our safety. Imagine what could happen should such intelligence be applied in warfare. |
Re: Mankind's Scientific Breakthroughs Of The Year 2015 You Should Know Of by Blakjewelry(m): 11:12pm On Jan 05, 2016 |
Craigston:Though we can make AI behave presently in certain way but in future, machines might have the ability to self learn "quantum computer will aid that alot" , they might be able to make decisions not based on what you preprogrammed but what they think is the right to do. Now while that has immerse benefits to man as for instance quantum computer have very high accuracy results in some tested case up 99.9% and I can imagine the benefits to space exploration which is one of my favorite, but what if they consider us as a threat to them, to the planet or to our selves. Am not too worry about man warring with man for that is part of the means by which nature keep us in check and preventing us from over populating the planet displacing other organisms. No matter the down side science is beautiful and it is about time we Africans join the train 1 Like |

brilliant. brilliant is all I can say. I've been following the progress since June last year and it has been wonderful actually, the super capacitor does not yet possess the power density of a battery. so, not feasible. but still awesome there is hope that this year will be even better. because of Moore's law, Google, DARPA, and the rest. and lest I forget, Juno is going to pass by Jupiter this year! yay! we'll finally get to see the giant gas ball up close. awesome months in sight. |
Re: Mankind's Scientific Breakthroughs Of The Year 2015 You Should Know Of by Nobody: 11:52pm On Jan 05, 2016 |
Blakjewelry:U're very correct as per the possibilities of creating an AI that will turn against us. U're not alone in that line of thought as many futurists have thought same. As a matter of fact, the 6th major mass extinction could be caused by AI. Man could control ANI (artificial narrow intelligence) and AGI (artificial general intelligence) to a large extent but what of ASI (artificial super intelligence)? U're correct to say they could self-learn and make their own decisions based on what they think is right. ASI will even have 'God-like' abilities if it could learn advanced nanotechnology and manipulating matter on the atomic level. If technological progress is indeed exponential, then ASI is inevitable. Could turn out good, could turn out to be our doom. But on a personal level, I feel it will turn out GOOD. |
Re: Mankind's Scientific Breakthroughs Of The Year 2015 You Should Know Of by Nobody: 11:55pm On Jan 05, 2016 |
Craigston:If we program then to 'learn', 'think', 'make decisions' and give us optimum results, then I feel they could go beyond the boundaries of the algorithms u talk about. A case of shooting ourselves in the foot |
Re: Mankind's Scientific Breakthroughs Of The Year 2015 You Should Know Of by Nobody: 12:39am On Jan 06, 2016 |
Teempakguy:Supercapacitors have higher power density (charge quick, discharge quick) than batteries. Unless u meant energy density. Yes conventional supercapacitors do have lower energy density than batteries but the new improved hybrid supercapacitors now have higher energy density. |
Re: Mankind's Scientific Breakthroughs Of The Year 2015 You Should Know Of by Nobody: 6:26am On Jan 06, 2016 |
ChokolateBoss:ah yes. I meant energy density. hmmn, I wonder what would happen if they were sandwiched with betavoltaic devices |
Re: Mankind's Scientific Breakthroughs Of The Year 2015 You Should Know Of by Blakjewelry(m): 11:17pm On Jan 06, 2016 |
ChokolateBoss:Which ever way it turns out It is for betterment of man, sometimes I feel nature is trying to create something more better. The stray asteroid that Wipeout the dinosaurs is not buy Chance, it is like the first experiment didn't work lol. The other planets are like experimental work to form a stable one weird but true. I feel we are heading toward a point, science definitely is going to take us there, we may even come to realize that all what we see, feel, smell, touch are nothing but just electrical feed, even quantum physics suggest nothing might be real as we expect |
Re: Mankind's Scientific Breakthroughs Of The Year 2015 You Should Know Of by Feraz(m): 12:30pm On Mar 08, 2016 |
ChokolateBoss:LOL! I have always had this fear too. Machines determining that man is a threat to its existence and will then tae over. After reading up a little on IoT, I feel it is going to pave way for AI. Blakjewelry:More like the earth trying to purge itself eh? |
