Ezenwa, Obaroakpo, Onobi Vie For Home Eagles Vice-Captaincy https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/image-14.jpeg By Adeboye Amosu: The trio of goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa, defender Austin Obaroakpo and midfielder Paul Onobi are in line to be appointed vice-captain of the home- based Super Eagles side, reports Comple tesportsnigeria.com. Sharks defender, Chima Akas, formerly the vice-captain of the squad, will captain the team at the African Nations Championship after the former captain, Gbolahan Salami, dumped the team in favour of a move to Europe. That has left the position of the vice-captain vacant with the handlers of the team yet to decide who will take over from Akas. Comple tesportsnigeria.com however scooped from a reliable source within the team's Protea Hotel base in Pretoria that the trio who are popular figures among their team mates are firm favourites to get the position. "The choice of the vice-captain position is between Ezenwa, Obaroakpo and Onobi," the source told Completesportsnigeria.com. "The coaches are yet to take any decision on that yet, but obviously one of the three players I mentioned will get the nod. "Aside from their qualities, they possess the right leadership traits and are also very popular within the squad." www.completesportsnigeria.com/ezenwa-obaroakpo-onobi-vie-for-home-eagles-vice-captaincy/ |

The striker spoke with Completesportsnigeria.com from the team's Protea Hotel base, at Hatfield Street in Pretoria. "The hotel is cozy, the weather is okay. We are in South Africa so that we can adapt to the weather challenges in Rwanda and from what I've seen so far, the decision to come here is spot-on. "Being in South Africa will help our outing in Rwanda because they have similar weather. The reception we got from Nigerians living here in South Africa was fantastic," the pacey striker added. In an exclusive chat with Comple tesportsnigeria.com, NFF secretary Dr. Sanusi Mohammed revealed that efforts are in the pipeline to ensure the likes of Sunday Oliseh, Samson Siasia and other national team coaches understudy some of the best coaches in the world once the governing body’s finances are in good shape. The programme which could last for a week or two, will serve to help coaches who may not have the strong financial muscles to undergo refresher courses abroad. Under the programme, the home coach would be part of club training as well as undergo scientific training on how to manage and get the best from players and more importantly get themselves abreast with modern trends of the game. “We intend to commence the attaché programmes for all national team coaches once we’re able to afford it,” Sanusi told Completesportsnigeria.com. “It is important we keep the coaches abreast with the latest tricks of the game. That programme will commence very soon.” www.completesportsnigeria.com/nff-to-send-oliseh-siasia/ |

Dalung: FG Will Reward 1985, 2015 Eaglets, Others In January https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/ge35.jpg By Bamidele Boluwaji: The Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalong has assured that the 1985 and 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup-winning Golden Eaglets squads and other teams and athletes that made Nigeria proud in 2015 will be honoured in the third week of January, Complete sports Nigeria.com can report. Speaking at the facilities inspection he conducted in Lagos on Monday, Dalung said the exact day in the third week of January has not been fixed but government is committed to rewarding the athletes who have brought hunour to the nation at various sporting events. "Welfare of our athletes is very important to us and on this note I want to inform you that the 1985 Golden Eaglets will be honoured in the third week of the month, those athletes and teams that did the nation proud last year will also be honoured, " the minister said. "A day will be approved to honour and reward them." While speaking on the state of facilities in Lagos, the former athlete said the maintanace structure is very poor, saying there is a need to go back and take a drastic decision on what will happen to the facilities. He however identified that the major reason why facilities maintance has not been effective was due to the short period past sports ministers have spent in office. According to him, past sports ministers have only had the opportunity of serving for 18 months which is not enough for any policy on facilities maintanace to be effective. "If I stay longer as a sports minister, I want to assure Nigerians that I will be able to put things in proper shape," Dalung said. www.completesportsnigeria.com/dalung-fg-will-reward-1985-2015-eaglets-others-in-january/ |

Ighalo Voted 2015 Complete Sports Player Of The Year https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/ighalo1.jpg Without any doubt, Odion Ighalo, was the best Nigerian footballer of 2015. And Complete Sports and Comple tesportsnigeria.com readers have confirmed this by giving him more votes than all other nominees for our award combined. The Super Eagles and Watford striker was overwhelmingly voted the 2015 Complete Sports Player of the Year, easily beating off competition from Obafemi Martins, Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho and Ahmed Musa. Ighalo polled a whopping 59 per cent of the votes, with new Super Eagles captain Musa coming second with 18 per cent. Manchester City youngster Iheanacho, who graduated to the senior teams of the club and national team last year, came third with 11 per cent of the votes. Golden Eaglets World Cup record goal scorer with 10 goals Osimhen finished fourth in the voting with seven per cent, while Seattle Sounders star striker Obafemi is fifth with five per cent. Ighalo chose 2015 to explode. While the Watford striker's talent was never in doubt even as a youngster, he has now stood up to be counted. Everything Ighalo has touched in 2015 has turned into gold. He started scoring for Watford, who he joined from Granada, from 10 January and he continued until the club's last match of the year on 28 December. In that 12-month period his goals have led Watford from the second-tier Championship to the Premier League and instead of struggling with the step-up in class, Ighalo has thrived on the big stage. In 2015 alone, Ighalo has scored 30 league goals in the two divisions – 16 in the Championship, 14 in the Premier League – making him the most prolific player in England's top four divisions. Ighalo has also become Watford's highest ever scorer in the EPL era and the first Watford player in history to score in six straight EPL matches. Our football-savvy readers have also voted Ighalo Complete Sports Player of the Month a remarkable four times in 2015 and it is no surprise he is also Player of the Year. Nigeria: Musa Cautions Ighalo on Patience CSKA Moscow winger, Ahmed Musa believes a move to a "bigger" club would detrimentally affect the career of Watford attacker, Odion Ighalo. Ighalo has been a revelation for the Hornets this campaign, hitting 14 league goals to power the newly-promoted side to the top half of the Barclays Premier League standings. Spanish club, Atletico Madrid reportedly watched him on no less than five occasions this season with a promise to double his wages with as they tried to lure him with the prospect of a tabling a £12 million pound deal for his services. Musa however feels a move in the January transfer window would unsettle Ighalo. "When it comes to issues like these, you usually leave the decision to the person that it affects directly so it is not really for me to say. "However, if I was to advise him, I would ask him to remain at Watford at least for now because if he leaves, it could affect him. "I also believe he will score a lot more if he chooses to remain at Watford," Musa told Nigeria Info FM. The Super Eagles captain concluded by voicing his sentiments on the "important" role he expects Ighalo to play in Nigeria's 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying double header with Egypt in March. "He (Ighalo) is one of the players we expect to play an important role in the two games against Egypt in March. "I am sure he will do well and that will help us to qualify for the Afcon," he said. Watford have since issued an official statement to the effect that Ighalo is not for sale under any circumstances. allafrica.com/stories/201601040729.html |

CHAN: Lawal tips Eagles strikers to shine Idris Adesina Olympic gold medallist Garba Lawal has said Prince Aggreh and the other strikers in the Super Eagles can score the needed goals for the team at the 2016 African Nations Championship in the absence of Warri Wolves forward, Gbolahan Salami. Salami was absent from the team’s camp in Abuja when they returned from the Christmas break on December 28 and was eventually left out of the final 23-man list for the tournament, which is for players plying their trade in their home leagues. The forward was reportedly heading outside the country in pursuit of a deal with some European clubs. The CHAN will hold between January 16 and February 7 in Rwanda and Nigeria will play their first match in Group C on January 18 against Niger Republic. The Eagles, who are in Pretoria, South Africa on a training tour, will play friendly matches against Angola and Ivory Coast ahead of the tournament. Lawal, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said although Salami was a prolific goalscorer, having scored 17 goals in the 2014/2015 season in the Nigeria Premier League, his exit from the team would not affect the Eagles’ chances of winning the tournament. “There were 26 players in the camp and 23 of them have been selected for the tournament. Salami is a good player because of his ability to score and assist goals but his absence will not affect the Eagles,” Lawal said. www.punchng.com/chan-lawal-tips-eagles-strikers-to-shine/ |

Onazi should make way for Mikel —Ajide Festus Abu Ganiyu Ajide has urged Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh to consider using Chelsea’s Mikel Obi in place of Ogenyi Onazi in the Super Eagles. Lazio’s Onazi has been a regular in the holding midfielder position in the national team since he made his international debut against Liberia in 2012, with Mikel in the attacking midfield role. The duo forged a good relationship in the midfield and helped Nigeria win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and a Brazil 2014 World Cup spot. But the midfield pairing failed to reproduce the sparkling form that earned them plenty of praise with their explosive performances in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and in the Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifiers. Former Eagles defender Ajide, who is a fan of the two players, believes Nigeria have yet to identify the right roles for Mikel and Onazi. The former Julius Berger star, who was dropped from the on the eve of the national team’s departure for the 1998 World Cup in France, has suggested Mikel should be played in the holding role with Onazi playing as a deep-lying playmaker. “(Chelsea’s caretaker manager) Guus Hiddink has proved that Mikel is a defensive midfielder, not an offensive midfielder,” the 1998 Carlsberg Cup winner told our correspondent on the telephone on Monday. “We have been having troubles trying to solve the problems of identifying Mikel’s right position in the national team. “Hiddink has solved the problem for us and we should play him in the defensive position where he’s comfortable. “I think Oliseh should consider using Mikel in the sitting midfield role because he loves to defend – and he can play it better than Onazi. “Onazi should be allowed to patrol the midfield because he has the energy to do so.” The Lagos-based coach, who missed out on a place in the victorious 1996 Olympic Games squad, called for Oliseh to focus on the victorious Senegal 2015 Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations national team for players to strengthen the Eagles. He also suggested that the players who distinguish themselves in the Rwanda 2016 African Nations Championship this month should be given a chance to fight their way into the senior national team. The former Stationery Stores player also called for Oliseh to invite Senegal 2015 highest goalscorer Oghenekaro Etebo to the Eagles to enable the 20-year-old to stake a place in the team. Ajide laments the country has found it difficult filling Austin Okocha’s shoes, urging Oliseh to consider Warri Wolves’ Etebo for a role in the attacking midfield. www.punchng.com/onazi-should-make-way-for-mikel-ajide/ |

AF Nigeria 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers - Africa Chelsea Mikel steadies Chelsea but is his future still blue? https://africanfootball.com/bp_images/2016/01/John_Mikel_Obi.jpg Mikel Obi Mikel Obi is suddenly the new star as troubled Chelsea fight their way back to the top of the English Premier League, but with a year left on his contract questions are being asked if his future is really at Stamford Bridge. In April, the Nigeria midfielder will be 29 and this is his 10thyear at the EPL champions during which time he has been very much part of the club’s biggest moments – UEFA Champions League and Europa League triumphs well as two EPL championships. But it is also this season that Mikel’s future at ‘The Blues’ came under serious scrutiny as he was left on the bench by the man who incidentally gave him his big break in England, Jose Mourinho. "Even when the preferred Nemanja Matic struggled, Mourinho hardly looked the way of Mikel". (Sir Krattoss and Jieta, pls take note of this portion, thanks) But even at the high points of his time at Chelsea, Mikel has been far from a popular player with the fans, who have criticised his style of play. But now under caretaker manager Guus Hiddink, the Nigeria star is enjoying a new lease of life and Cheslea have now gone three games unbeaten, winning for the first time across London at Crystal Palace to avenge a first round defeat. Mikel has been handed the responsibility of playing as the holding midfielder by Hiddink to the admiration of the manager, pundits and fans alike. On Sunday, he shone as he broke down Palace in the middle of the park. The former Lyn Oslo of Norway ace was always at the right place to pick up the loose balls and the times he was in the right place to pick up second balls and recycle possession — that really highlighted his contribution. Hiddink described the Nigeria international as “the ideal player” to keep balance in the Chelsea team. "If we have three very creative players [in midfield] … it’s possible but in this league, it’s difficult. That’s why we look for the balance. John Obi is the ideal player to bring balance back to the team,” remarked Hiddink. “Previously Chelsea conceded a lot of goals and you can say that the four defenders are not doing their jobs. But if the team is not willing to defend well, or does not have the right balance, then you concede a lot of goals. John Obi can recover the ball and he reads the game very well. A player who can defend so smoothly, for me, is beautiful to see.” Mikel enjoyed a good time under the Dutch coach in his first spell in 2009 as Chelsea manager and the Nigerian is feeling wanted again and has good environment to do what he knows how to do best. “We’re working hard and we’re more relaxed. We’re on the way to where we belong,” said Mikel. The player though will still have to consider a big pay day as he nears the end of a hugely decorated career and in the coming season, with a new man in charge and a different drive for Chelsea, he will most certainly have to weigh his options going forward. Mikel Mania in focus: Nigeria star revived under Guus Hiddink https://images.performgroup.com/di/library/GOAL_INTERNATIONAL/76/6f/john-obi-mikel_mmf5fq6ofddx122l5emcv440r.jpg?t=143865130&w=620&h=430 The Chelsea midfielder is part of the furniture at Stamford Bridge, but has found a new lease of life following the departure of Jose Mourinho. By Solace Chukwu As the Fifa Ballon d’Or ceremony draws closer, the eyes of the world will be drawn once more to the world’s most predictable soap opera. The cast is well-known, the props are all the same, the outcome is limpid to the point of tastelessness. It is an acknowledgement of super human feats, but if simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, then there should be an award for Chelseamidfielder John Obi Mikel. And on the 7th day, Mikel sat back and screened the defence to allow God to push forward and create more expressively.— Mid '90s Laudrup (@WarAndSetPiece) January 3, 2016 His display against Crystal Palace on Sunday served as a perfect reminder of his abilities; in truth, we might be forgiven for having forgetten them—so infrequently has he featured in a meaningful way in recent times. Unwaveringly consistent, durable if not especially lustrous, the Nigeria international is Europe’s most hardy footballer. https://static.goal.com/di/70B22848D26C0216233710AB7738715F.png Roman Abramovich has built the Blues into a genuine powerhouse on the continent, and that by eschewing the sort of complacent staleness that can come with a long-serving manager. We have seen Jose Mourinho twice, Luis Felipe Scolari, Avram Grant, Guus Hiddink now in a second spell, Carlo Ancelotti, Andre Villas Boas, Roberto Di Matteo and Rafa Benitez warm the home dugout at Stamford Bridge. Only two players have seen them all out: captain John Terry, and Mikel. https://static.goal.com/di/E673AAB8B080CFD2E63F73CC5FA375E6.jpg If Terry is Mr. Chelsea, the Lord of the Cobham Manor, then Mikel is the wise, wrinkled butler, a picture of servile promptitude, retreating into the shadows when unneeded but secure in his indispensability. The return of Hiddink has been greeted in the Chelsea fold with the enthusiasm reserved for the visit of a favourite Uncle, and the Dutch manager has no doubt noted with warm relief that his slippers are laid out just as he wants, and his bath is run at just the right temperature. His short stint in 2009, culminating in an FA Cup triumph and cut short in the Champions League semi-final by Andres Iniesta’s late strike, coincided with Mikel’s most productive season (in terms of appearances) at Chelsea. The 28-year-old made 34 league appearances that term, and started 10 of Hiddink’s 13 Premier League games in charge. John Obi Mikel |2015-16 Premier League stats Much has changed since then, not least the playing personnel, but Hiddink has again found Mikel, an older and wiser version no less, useful to the cause of rescuing a team in a perilous nosedive under Jose Mourinho. Already, Mikel has played more minutes in the three games since the former Netherlands manager was parachuted in (225) than he managed the entire season prior to the Dutchman's arrival. While many players, Eden Hazard and Diego Costa primary among them, might have been relieved with Mourinho's departure, Mikel looks to be the Chelsea star to benefit the most...for now at least! https://static.goal.com/di/CE8B9E6A33EBB416D8D6189DB327D97D.jpg His partnership with Cesc Fabregas in front of the back four at Selhurst Park provided the platform for the reigning champions’ most convincing performance of the season so far. Not the sort of assertive personality to consistently dictate games, Mikel thrives with a more progressive passer, allowing him to focus on the simple things. He completed seven ball recoveries and 78 of 82 attempted passes. Contrary to the popular criticism of his play, half of those passes were played forward, and he also demonstrated his efficiency under pressure by completing eight out of nine in the attacking third of the pitch. See the difference! |Mikel's EPL stats in 2014-15 Having been heavily linked to a move abroad in the summer, it would appear reports of Mikel’s demise have been greatly overstated. With previous incumbent Nemanja Matic seemingly afflicted by second-season syndrome, the Nigeria midfielder may once again best another competitor by sheer forbearance. ........ |

Oriol Romeu and Raul Mereiles. The Nigerian...newly dubbed the 'African Zidane'...remains! Considering that midfield zone has struggled for the right balance all season long, there is no better argument for a Fabregas-Mikel solution – at least till season’s end – than the Palace performance. John Mikel Obi has tasked his Chelsea teammates to keep working hard and keep believing in their quest to end the season on a high. The Blues cruised to their first win under manager Guus Hiddink in their 3-0 defeat of Crystal Palace with Oscar, Willian and Diego Costa finding the back of the net in the London derby. Mikel who started for the second game in succession was outstanding as he protected the back four and kept the ball moving in midfield. “There are a lot of games to be played and if we can keep putting in these kind of performances the sky is our limit,” Mikel told Chelsea website. “We need to keep believing but we don’t want to get carried away, we played well but we need to keep working hard in training. “Let’s hope it’s a new year and a new Chelsea. We’ve been disappointed with our results but we’ve shown what type of team we are.” The Nigerian went on to thank the supporters, who were in fine voice at Selhurst Park, for their backing this season. “They’ve been supporting us when it hasn’t been great and stuck by us, we can’t ask for more from them,” he added. “I want to say a big thank you for the support they’ve given us and hopefully we can keep producing this type of performance.” m.goal.com/x/en-ng/news/4110/nigerians-abroad/2016/01/04/18970432/we-need-to-keep-believing-mikel-tasks-chelsea-teammates |

He missed an 88th-minute chance to make that record when his low shot was comfortably saved by Joe Hart. He also had a good chance earlier in the game after an incredible turn left Nicolas Otamendi for dead, but the finish didn’t match the skill. He was a constant thorn in the flesh for the City defence. His side didn’t deserve to be on the losing end of a 2-1 scoreline. https://images.performgroup.com/di/library/Goal_Nigeria/2a/6b/john-obi-mikel_zdfmsyt5ur0n1mq1qqalt6mui.png?t=195061130&w=320 John Obi Mikel: Mikel started in his 352nd game for Chelsea as they thrashed Crystal Palace 3-0 on Sunday. The 28-year-old played the entire duration of the match and provided a much-needed balance to Chelsea’s midfield as they climbed one place up the table. He continues to enjoy game-time since the sacking of Jose Mourinho, as he has featured in all four games since then, and played 90 minutes in two of those. Just as it looked as if he was finally about to leave the club, Hiddink seems to have reeled him back in. https://images.performgroup.com/di/library/Goal_Nigeria/38/ca/uche-henry_hzmwehhttiod1xuva2993ou2v.jpg?t=194722290&w=320 Uche Henry Agbo (picture) and Isaac Success: Henry put in a good shift for Granada in the midfield but it was Success that caught the headlines. The attacker opened the scoring for Granada after 17 minutes, as they went on to beat Sevilla 2-1 in La Liga. The 19-year-old fired home a rebound into the bottom right corner of Sevilla’s goal after the ball broke to him in the box. It was his fourth goal of the season. https://images.performgroup.com/di/library/Goal_Nigeria/e1/8c/efe-ambrose-of-celtic_18qd2xksdmmfn1vkk4ib3apryb.jpg?t=2106545368&w=320 Efe Ambrose: He was restored to the Celtic starting XI against Partick Thistle and was largely instrumental in their clean sheet in what proved a difficult game. Ambrose made several blocks and interceptions as Celtic went on to score a late goal to claim all three points. He has been the butt of jokes this season for his errors, but he was a rock for The Bhoys on Saturday. https://images.performgroup.com/di/library/Goal_Nigeria/a8/8d/juwon-oshaniwa-of-nigeria_1oy4l3or8qwmx1nsnfqzryddht.jpg?t=1006005031&w=320 Juwon Oshaniwa: Still in the Scottish Premiership, Juwon Oshaniwa continues to post impressive performances for Hearts. In their 2-2 draw with Kilmarnock, he kept Anglo-Nigerian forward Tope Obadeyi at bay in an interesting one-on-one duel, before the latter limped off. As has become tradition now, the Nigeria international saw out all 90 minutes of action. He will, however, rue his turnover of possession which cost Hearts a goal – a blip on an otherwise assured performance. https://images.performgroup.com/di/library/Goal_Nigeria/5f/8c/dominic-iorfa-of-wolves_1tif006omrnl01foybkr0oubp3.png?t=194868130&w=320 Dominic Iorfa: The right-back continued to impress for Wolves in the Championship. He played all 90 minutes again as they ran out with a narrow 1-0 win at the Falmer Stadium over Brighton & Hove Albion, courtesy of an own goal. Despite a 51st minute yellow card, it was a satisfactory display from the youngster. It was his second straight clean sheet and his fifth in a 10-game run for Wolves. His is looking more and more assured between the sticks – a good sign for the Super Eagles. jieta: A Coach should also value his player's career and should not just consider only what the players brings to the team. If you consider any player surplus to your team, simply sell or loan him out to a Club that needs his services. Other than killing the player's career through bench role. The bench role function that John Mikel Obi played during Jose Mourinho's second stink with Chelsea FC was not significant on a related note. Just hope Guus Hiddink's second coming revives his once forgotten talent. |
