OAU student should go and learn from their counterpart "UI". UI student used to succeed most time in their quest for what is right. They don't brag like OAU student "Aluta forces of Nigeria". UI is full of intellects. I remembered when they gave the students break to find solution to power supply in 2010 or so. Also last year, when there was fuel scarcity in the country, they gave the student two weeks so that the management can find solution to all the problem fuel scarcity with no electricity can cause.

my dear, there is a lot of spelling errors and wrong use of tenses in this your write-up. I am in a hurry,if not I would have pointed them out to you but please show this to your english teacher if you have a good one. I am concerned because its coming from an undergraduate.
Can't you correct him constructively? And if you are truly concerned, please take your time and point out the mistakes to him and and perceived corrections...if not..#LEAVETRASH4LAWMA

I'm really sorry for Nigeria, if a student could come up with this. I am a graduate of the University of Ibadan, who has visited OAU twice to know that even as bad as things are in U.I, students live like kings, compared to the slum-like hostels OAU students stay in. Instead of staying on point, you went on to attack the SUG of your University like they were responsible for the state of things in the school. You must be really naïve to think that patronising the school management on social media will set you out as a critical thinker. Rather the opposite is the case. You come off to me as a potential victim of the Stockholm's syndrome. This is not about the S.U or about your pastors and imams (how ridiculous). This is about the right of students to demand better living conditions and accountability from administrators in the academic sphere. Most irritating of this piece, was the hint of admiration at the way the VC handled the matter. Fifth columnists like you are the reason I'm scared for the future of this country. While some are putting their academic pursuits on the line to protest unfair treatment by the bourgeoisie, the proletariat is being infiltrated by collaborators.
Mr, your university days and ours aint the same, we don't want to spend 15years studying a 4years course because one stupid SU believes strike is the only option..your mates that went to unilorin are already through with their PHD, you are just doing your MSC because stupid aluta...gerrarahere jor

what is SU? you did not define it in your essay, except if it is directed at OAU students only.
SU means Student's Union

oau dey sweet u abi. You are happy they proscribed the union. I'm sorry for u. Though the union is no more vibrant like it was during our time, when VC faborode is afraid of Akinola saburi.
Its not about been happy of proscription, its because the SU has now turned to an avenue where people run their personal agenda instead of students own. Moreover, the congress they call is too emotionally charged to make good decisions and they don't make plans on what will happen after the school is closed down or whatever. Its simple, they have made SU useless.

I have placed this two quotes side by side to emphasize a point. The fact that one shouldn't give up on something after it fails the first time doesn't mean that the approach towards achieving that thing shouldn't be altogether changed the second time. If anything, trying again and again should be an opportunity to learn from your mistakes and avoid them the next time. Thomas Edison knew this. That's why he went on to invent the Electric Light Bulb.

To my point, how many times are we going to use aluta before we understand that the days when aluta held any sort of potency are long gone? Nigeria is a rapidly changing country and the change, unfortunately, has been a negative one. This is seen when one analyses events from our Independence till date. The kind of power students held, the kind of respect students had; all those are echoes of the past.

I am sure a lot of SUGs have observed this but the majority of them would rather embrace the cheap sense of heroism and popularity showered on them by sycophants so they go on screaming, kicking, and throwing tantrums even when they understand that the school management usually ends up doing what it wants.

I take it that you're a member of the SUG so I look forward to your reply because I have a suggestion.

Any body who praises the flagrant abuse of power as shown by Omole is an enemy of everything good. I understand your plight, you don't want to waste donkey years in school. I do not intend defending the CEC of OAU student Union they can do that themselves. Every possible method has been used in OAU Unionism to no avail , this is because you have a group of people who are not concerned about the welfare of the students and are ready to send the students home for any of the slightest excuse ever heard in history. So what should we then do ?. Siddon look while the management assume the positions of emperors, demanding and that we 'zip up ' while we suffer from total and utter neglect.
Every single year the standard in OAU worsens, welfarism is absent and we live in the worst conditions possible. Those pictures of our halls of residence that were circulated before the ill fated mid-semester break were not photoshopped .
Student unionism is not perfect but in our desire to rush through the dungeon called OAU we should know that Aluta isn't about us as individuals but our generation and future Great Ife Students who would have to reap from our doggedness in the face of oppression as we reaped from past struggles.
Prof Omole might be a very good academia but he was a poor manager.
Mass failures, easily preventable deaths, poorly 'refurbished' structures and allegations of corruption can tell the story better.

I'm only a member of the SU, I don't hold any post. I'll highlight a few points; 1. Everywhere in the world people still protest, even in advanced countries, watch Tv. It is a very good way to show you're not happy, especially when the situation is already life threatening. 2. The SU try several ways, they write the management, they invite them for talks, know for a fact that they ignore them alot, get closer to them and know how easy it is for them to get the management's attention. 3. In OAU, the student union leaders don't have 100% say on when to stage a protest, if the students want it, they make happen. 4. We're going through all this because we have wicked leaders, we shouldn't have to stage a protest before we have good water to drink in the first place.

1) I understand that protests are a way of keeping governments and Leaderships in check, however, when last did protests on OAU campus yield positive results? Protests only yield results in saner climes. By now,you should understand that one of my biggest points is that we should stop trying to escape the reality of what is on ground. Apart from only serving to anger the management, what has it done?

2) Thank God for that. They have tried several ways, they should keep looking for alternatives and trying them. Aluta doesn't achieve shi-t anymore on OAU campus. The point is to keep trying but in other ways.

3) They might not have 100% say but their influence still holds sway to a large extent. The truth is that they have a responsibility to make the students understand that poor students welfare and living conditions is like an evolving disease without cure. Aluta is a treatment that the disease has outgrown over time. If anything, aluta is like constantly pressing where the patient hurts, hoping the disease will disappear.

4) Yes, they are wicked. I totally agree. Have we exhausted other viable alternatives at getting back at them? No, I don't believe so.

At this point, I think what the SU should concentrate on is trying to make students see reason. We can protest about civil rights issues such as students-staff problems and other minor welfare issues like poor electricity power and water supply that are bound to occur every now and then.

The time has come for us to become more strategic in our Unionism. We cannot keep suffering because some of us would rather display brawns without brains. And would you deny the fact that a lot of SU leaders simply want to "cause trouble", rather than sit down and discuss whether protesting openly is the best approach . For some, it's a popularity agenda, for others, they just need the sense of heroism. I agree that there are sincere leaders in the SU but they end up caving under pressure.

NB: Aluta as used in my post means "open mass protest" and not "struggle"
