It is amazing that more people have been killed in six weeks by Lassa fever than Ebola killed.

There is therefore need to ensure you are aware. Do not panic. Just know something deadly is around and then protect yourself and your family.

The facts
1. Outbreak is currently confirmed in about eight states
2. It has killed 35 and infected 74
3. It shows up between 7 to 21 days after infection
4. It is transmitted by rats
5. Can be contacted from an infected human
6. It can be treated especially if diagnosed on time
7. Symptoms are mild and undiagnosed in early states, thus making the disease deadly
8. Nursing mothers are said to be more at risk

Symptoms
Mild symptoms include slight fever, general malaise and weakness, and headache. In 20% of infected individuals, however, disease may progress to more serious symptoms including hemorrhaging (in gums, eyes, or nose, as examples), respiratory distress, repeated vomiting, facial swelling, pain in the chest, back, and abdomen, and shock. Neurological problems have also been described, including hearing loss, tremors, and encephalitis.

Death may occur within two weeks after symptom onset due to multi-organ failure. The most common complication of Lassa fever is deafness. Various degrees of deafness occur in approximately one-third of infections, and in many cases hearing loss is permanent. As far as is known, severity of the disease does not affect this complication: deafness may develop in mild as well as in severe cases. Approximately 15%-20% of patients hospitalized for Lassa fever die from the illness. However, only 1% of all Lassa virus infections result in death.

What to do
1. Please maintain good hygiene.
2. If you didn't hate rats before, please do now. Carefully apply rat poison if you are in rat infested zone
3. Cases of fever should not be taken as a visit-the-pharmacy / self medication thing. Try see qualified health practitoners

It's not causing panic if such info's are confirmed rather it creates enlightenment and cautions the public to be extra careful.
