By the time Shagari's regime was toppled, the economy was in such a bad state that Nigeria had to resort to counter trade in order to be able to service its offshore obligations and import products, for its citizenry. The slide of the naira to the dollar embarked on a freefall under Shagari's regime - the same naira that used to be stronger than the dollar under Gowon.

I beg, read the newspapers of that era to make an informed decision!

Not really, if you look again, Tanko Yakasai said:
