Some info and pics on the programe to bring our AAA up to CRAM (Counter Rocket Artillery and Mortar) status, using the Skysheild programe and AHEAD ammunition

- SKY SHIELD
The contract encompasses the supply of Oerlikon Skyshield fire control units, which will substantially improve the performance and accuracy of South Africa’s current twin-gun systems as well as significantly expanding the operational spectrum of its air defence capabilities. South Africa currently operates 102 GDF-002 and 48 modified GDF-005 units. In this context, a number of the twin-gun systems will also be retrofitted with upgrade kits to accommodate Rheinmetall’s state-of-the-art AHEAD Anti-missile ammunition including logistics and training services, the complete package is scheduled for completion by 2017.

The Skyshield is easily deployed by trucks and other transportation systems. The fire control system (FCS) uses an X-band search and tracking radar, and another unit for radar/TV and/or laser/FLIR precision tracking. The command post can be placed up to 500 meters, roughly, from the fire control unit (FCU), using encrypted radio-waves. The Skyshield system can also be networked with other air defense systems for wider and more effective air coverage, expanding its roles from point defense to area defense.

- AHEAD ammunition
The 35 mm Ahead system, consists of measurement and programming units, control electronics and programmable Ahead ammunition. It can be fitted to any suitable automatic cannon and then successfully engage small, fast aerial targets with a high kill probability. Each Ahead round contains 152 tungsten sub-projectiles which are ejected immediately in front of the oncoming target. The measurement unit determines the velocity of each Ahead round prior to muzzle exit. Based on this data, the control electronics calculates the sub-projectile ejection time, which is transmitted via the programming unit to the time fuse in the projectile.

What aircraft is this?

Although, I hear we could still order the A-29 Tucano (let us wait till the end of the year). We are about the faze out our Air bettles, the Alpha Jets would soon also be retired same as the L-39ZA.

Our 14 MB-339 have been converted to CD models, although they are still in Italy.

I like what Helmoed said.

It will be great if we covert several Ratel to APC. I've been in a Ratel command, only modification you would have to do is add/replace the currents seats, and maybe a slight modification to the turret, all and all i dont think it will cost more than R50 000 Rand to convert a Ratel command to an APC.

BUT we should still keep our Ratel90 and Ratel81 as there are no Badger variants to replace them, Also the Ratel ZT3 and RatelEAOS should also not be replaced but Rather complemented by their equivalent Badger variants.

I know the G2s are still fired regularly for all sorts of events, At my university they fire a G2 before every Varsity Cup Game to signal the start of the match.

The G4/M71 howitzer are another matter, in fact i don't think I've ever seen one, I know the SANDF has all 32 in reserve.

The 88mm G1 howitzer/ QF 25-pounder is what is used for many ceremonies.

Some of the 140mm G2s were donated to Namibia when they deployed to the DRC in 90s.

Have you also ever seen the SANDF's Russian MANPADS paraded? Were used to guard our artillery guns during the war in Angola currently in reserve.

The fire support and mortar variant replace those two.

Regarding the 90 I'd support removing the gun and putting it on a smaller vehicle like the RG-35.

The EAOS is not being replaced.

Insider info says Nigerian airforce new aircraft additions by Q4 2016 if all plans go well as scheduled will be :

10 Super Mushak 4th gen trainer and COIN
3 JF-17 Thunder 4th gen multi-role jets
14 MBB 339 jets 4th gen upgrade NAF owned, sent to Italy for upgrade.
xx Super Tucanos COIN
xx CH-4 armed drones, variant with 6 to 10 guided missiles per UAV
xx ISTAR aircraft superior to the ATR-42 Surveyor.

Time for NAF to even help Mali, Chad, Cameroon, Nigér Republiqué with surgical strikes when insurgents bases and training camps are found by local intelligence/recce. The West Afican Islamic terrorists seem to be avoiding Nigeria and migrating to weaker countries. ECOWAS must cooperate with Lake Chad basin countries, terrorism is everybody's problem.

This incident is quite unfortunate, we need to go back and re-draw our tactics. The enemy is constantly evolving and he poses a serious security threat to all Africans, especially those of us in Kenya, Nigeria and Egypt.
When I called for an AU special forces brigade of say 5,000 men highly trained in a place like Belarus that has world class training facilities and experienced trainers who are professionals with experience of SF ops against Mujaheedin Islamic terrorists in Afghanistan Vs USSR war, most guys on this thread were against it.

Now see what El Shabbab is doing to regular African troops in Somalia, I saw this coming, that's why I advocated an AU special forces brigade with world class training. If we don't get better trained troops into the battle theater, the so called 'well trained African troops who need no foreign training' that make up the AU forces will spend 10 years in Somalia getting dribbled around by El Shabbab.

Get 2,500 COIN trained AU special forces to Somalia, rotate every 6 months with the other 2,500 SF men and see a difference. Not all SF can do this job, this is Islamic terrorism, you need COIN SF, not just any SF. The countries with COIN SF are very few, go get the training where it can be found, they are different from Conventional war SF that fight against a predictable, clearly clothed-uniformed identifiable enemy, clearly defined battle space frontlines, no suicide bombers, no religious extremist brainwashing, no mixing and disguising as civilians, no use of civilian human shields, etc.

When you try to advise for the good of Africa, some people here start marketing their own country in a selfish glory hunting expedition and claiming to have capable SF that can handle a new type of assymetric enemy, they dont care is AU is misled, as long as their country is glorified.

I just hope AU officers read this thread and pick up good advice when they see such coming from all over Africa on this Nairaland forum.

As far as i know the Badger is only coming out with 60mm breach loading mortar turret, basically replacing the Ratel60 , there is no mention of any variant replacing the Ratel81

The Badger Fire Support variant still uses the 30mm cannon, Upgrading the Ratels 90mm ammunition to a HESH type round, I think would be the best, it will fill the gap between the capabilities of the 30mm and the ATMG variants.....But ideally you would like a 105mm Gun instead of the 90mm gun, but as a stop-gap measure i feel it would be the best for now.

Also love the idea of putting a few 90mm on the RG35!!

The reason we objected is because you dont need to go to Belarus for training (which is pretty low quality anyway).

Hate to break it to you, but Belorussian units were not involved in Afghanistan.... only Russian units from the Volga–Urals Military District fought in A-stan

And frankly, the images you showed us of their "training" was ludicrous.

Fact is that there are plenty countries in Africa with competant SF set-ups that are focused on COIN - they are for example:

1. South Africa:
- Recces (4 Recce for seaborn, 5 Recce for ground ops)
- SAPS-STF (HVT rescue, HVT capture, interdiction, FIBUA)

2. Egypt
- Unit 777, Unit 33 (same as SAPS-STF, but militay)
- Sa'ka Forces (basically US Army Ranger equivalent)

3. Algeria
- G.I.S (same as Unit 777, SAPS-STF)

4. Moroccan
- Airforce unit that specializes in QRF and CSAR, recently tained Belgian SF in desert operations

Etc etc ect.

So just in Africa, there are 7 experienced SF/SOF formations that specialize from South African Recces who focus on deep reconnaissance, to Egyptians and Algerians with Counter Terrorism units that focus on FIBUA and hostage extraction and Morocco with world class QRF and CSAR units.

There is no need to fly men to a country that has never fought a war and that has a ramshackle military for training that can be done in Africa, by Africans and focused on African conditions.
