That 20,000 is not the fighting force. Out of that number might find the mission is only able to deploy 5000 - 8000 fighting troops.
when your camp is being overran even the cook has to fight.uganda troop are being taught how to counter an ambush when on vehicle or foot patrol, build fortifications and obstacles ,bunkers, counter attack in case there is an enemy attempt infiltration on the camp, base what ever.

That 'ordinary' American regular soldier is better trained than some special forces in African armies. USA has a whole 'city' called National Training Center Fort Irwin, where live COIN combat against Islamic terrorists is simulated in an urban city and rural field scenarios. Such training facility and doctrine does not exist in Africa for Islamic Terrorism COIN.

You see him as a basic regular NATO troop from the US Army, but he has Fort Irwin training that beats most special forces in Africa when it comes to Islamic terror COIN.

You have this in Africa ? http://v-e-n-u-e.com/In-the-Box-A-Tour-Through-the-Simulated-Battlefields-of-the-U-S-Army

I said 2,500 SF because the regulars will still be there as 20,000 men (30% of them may be non-combatants, so maybe just 14,000 combatants), but the hard nut cracking force will be the 2,500 SF...they are the ones who will do all those things the regulars cannot do because of poor training and doctrine, you said it yourself below...

That is the difference between a regular soldier or a conventional warfare SF, there is a new need now for COIN SF, the Belorussians, Russians, Americans, British, Israelis, are already stepping up training of these special units. I work for a PMC in Yankee land, that is why I know what I am advocating for. Our PMC security guards are now having COIN based training, makes them different from other PMC that have just conventional 'mercenary' type of training. We now build up men for COIN special operations.

AU should step up. 5,000 men COIN SF with the best of modern equipment, a force of Light-Fast-Highly mobile-Devastating firepower armaments-Portable hi-tech surveillance/spyware-etc, they will begin to penetrate the nucleus and cut off the life wire of El-shabbab, hitting the terrorists by surprise where it hurts most, causing rapid attrition by inflicting heavy casualties on the best men and equipment of El-Shabbab, that is the only way to degrade and defeat Islamic Terrorism that has resisted regular troops and regular SF for many years.

i am not denying that they are not needed, what i am also advocating is for even our regular troops to have some knowledge on counter insurgency warfare.a while ago i posted a video of an israel urban warfare training center where regular soldiers are trained in fighting in a build up area, due to changing warfare environment

"Bit of topic"

Took this Old baby out of the safe for the first time in more than 2 years!! This is mostly due to the fact that I prefer to hunt with a bow these days instead of a rifle, anyway she's in need of a good cleaning, and if I have to be honest I don't like cleaning much, but I think I'll enjoy this one!!

Also a bit of friendly competition:

Can anyone identify my rifle...should be rather easy for any gun/military enthusiast!!

after reading this news article i am shocked most african elite units are incapable in the new emerging threats.during the recent terror attack in Burkina Faso the unit which was sent to eliminate this terrorist ,said they couldn't engage them because they fear killing civilians.it took 9 hour for this terrorist to be killed

Burkina Faso's long night of horror in killing spree by militants

When Burkina Faso anti-terrorism Commander Evrard Somda arrived with 20 men to start a fight-back against Islamist militants holed up in a five-story hotel, his first decision was to seal off the area and throw away the rule book.

His training in France, Kenya, Senegal and elsewhere taught him he should be trying to make contact with the hostage takers. A quick glance at the horror before him was enough to know this would not work.

Cars blazed in the street, bursts of gunfire echoed from the Splendid Hotel and bodies were strewn across the terrace of Cappuccino, a cafe-restaurant across the road popular for its European menu and free WiFi.

"They wanted to kill the maximum number of people and for them it wasn't a problem to die," Somda, who arrived on the scene at 8.30 pm (1530 ET), told Reuters in the most detailed account yet of Friday night's assault.

But Somda realized his men could not simply storm the hotel for fear of accidentally killing civilians.

"We couldn't just do what we wanted. We were obliged to take account of the life of the clients inside the hotel and avoid opening fire on them," he said.

In the event, it would be nine hours before the three attackers were cornered in the nearby Bush Taxi restaurant. They fired on a brown troop carrier at the crossroads and a machine gunner perched in the vehicle's turret shot them dead, he said.

By then, 29 civilians from at least seven countries were dead in an attack that stamped the imprint of Islamist militancy on West Africa well beyond the previous flashpoints of Mali and northeast Nigeria.

To be honest there are very few african nations with competent HRT teams

Even Egypts Unit 777 had a pretty momentous fvckup.

But, these types of hostage situation are obviously much more difficult than the regular stuff most units deal with. I think it is inevitable that hostages will die in these situations and that the only real defense is extremely rapid response... once you let them get entrenched its pretty much game over.

a survivor said the terrorists after gunning down people would disappear, reappear again pump more bullets to those still alive and even corpses countless times.they had all the time to make sure everyone was dead,no wonder the french sent its special forces to Ouagadougou.stop using the term hostage situation,i know you know this is a active shooter situation.an orgy killing, during this attack a 9 year old kids was among those killed

well said. from the mall in Kenya, to the university, to the hotel in Mali and now Burkina Faso its very clear that these jihadist types are bent on mayhem and need no hostages and even if they took hostages, negotiations would be pointless cos they are ready to die and seek to take as many people as possible with them. the faster the response the better. the 1st security responders should probably take the fight to them ASAP

72 special forces battalion is based in Markurdi, Benue state. 72 Mobile Strike Force is just a part of the much larger Nigerian Army Special Forces Battalion. There are multiple Special forces units of the Nigerian Army, however their home base is the 72 Special Force battalion.

This is the kind of situation I was talking about when I said our SAPS STF could help in training other African SF units.

STF is well trained and experienced when it comes to handling such situations.

After seeing how quickly kenyan SFs dealt with the terrorists during that attack on the university, I'm very sure they could also help build up other African SF units.
