I know its Only God that saved us. I thanked God when ebola entered Nigeria through Lagos because I know Lag has better medical facilities compared to other states(Northern states). I imange what could have happened if Ebola entered through the North. Lassa started from the North and now it spreading like fire across the country. |

chesterlee:Yep....but still....you really do not need a big building before you can fight lassa. It is easy to set up an isolation unit. |

It's obvious ur not a doctor, and it's more obvious that ur not very smart, or else u won't be talking about a professor, a teacher of medical teachers that way! Ode! Receive sense IJN Emekamex: |

teamchocolate:I will rather be a dullard than have professors that cant practice what they teach and solve common problems. You are the one really in need of sense if you are defending an obviously clueless, inept and unprepared Health Minister. |

So continue to be a dullard which u obviously already are ![]() Doctors are not magicians, if there is not structure on ground, what do u want them to do.... Ebola was an imported epidemic which was lucky to have come through Lagos which had a health system in place that worked in terms of manpower, surveillance and other favourable factors... LF is a different kettle of fish.. it is primarily endemic and concentrated in the north where there is a lot of illiteracy and health non-awareness.. I think the minister is doing just fine. BTW I worked as a volunteer during ebola and I am working closely with Lagos state on LF too so I know what I am saying.. If ebola had not come in thru lagos, and doctors were not on strike, the story may have been different because the health system is weak.. the health system comprises of all components that make health work. Maybe u may like to visit the W.H.O page and look at the 6 building blocks of the health system and rate Nigeria... there has been a systemic rot in the health system over the years.. definitely over the past decade.. it's not something that can be remedied over 6 months..wish I cud give you some practical examples but can't do that without compromising my identity... Anyway I do hope you are better informed... Emekamex: |

teamchocolate:I don't really condone insulting anybody but in most countries, health ministers are not doctors, not even pharmacists or nurses. Yet they do brilliant jobs. I know many medical profs. Most won't make good administrators/ministers. Being a dean, VC or MD of a teaching hospital won't necessarily prepare one for such a political job. Except they have more extensive exposure to politics previously. Like Chris Ngige, Peter Odili (though PDP member), etc. I think they should stick to medicine/surgery & research. |

He insulted my teacher and senior colleague first.. In most countries that you speak, they don't have minister of health, what they have is a SURGEON-GENERAL who is always a doctor..forget the propaganda of one army surgeon nurse who is surgeon general in the US, I have had this argument countless times.. The Surgeon general is ALWAYS A DOCTOR. (M.D) AreaFada2: |

teamchocolate:->Stop spewing trash, this isn't the first epidemic of Lassa Fever that Nigeria has suffered before. ->What previous governments have always done was to contain the spread by quickly identifying patients and quarantining those that may have had close contacts with them. ->The first thing that your health minister did was to play politics and blame the previous administrations without even trying to contain the spread. ->FYI Ebola didn't end in Lagos, it later found its way to Rivers State and was also contained by the previous government so you have no excuses to give. ->The present administration acted late and seem not to have the zeal to vigorously quarantine suspected patients and also contain the spread. ->Lassa Fever is more predominant in the North not just because of poor health care but because that area is more susceptible to bush burning due to adverse dry weather and these destroys the habitats of the contagious rats who have no other choice than to scavenge for food in human settlements and homes thereby infecting them. |

We can't compare lassa fever case to Ebola even if both are hemorrhagic disease. lassa fever can occur anywhr in d country becos d causative animal is found in most homes. Ebola is not a native to Nigeria, just came coincidentally & was found out by a good doc on time. I blame Nigeria leaders, lassa fever is a common thing in Nigeria dat occur almost every year. By now facilities should have been in place and people well informed abt dis disease d way people av knowledge of malaria which is predominant in Africa |

teamchocolate:US is just one country. Even US has a Secretary of Health & Human Services. Current one is Sylvia Matthews Burwell. UK, Eire, France, Germany, Australia, South Africa, India and most commonwealth countries have one. Surgeon-General is NOT minister of health, please don't mislead people. It's equivalent to Chief Medical Officer in UK. There is Chief Nursing Officer too. I have even met both Liam & Sally, previous & Current CMOs. Haba! Just admit and learn if you don't know something. |

The APC led government should not play politics with an issue like this. Instead they should fight this epidemic the way the Goodluck Jonathan government did with ebola. |
| Re: Lassa Fever Claims 63, Spread To 17 States by teamchocolate: 1:12am On Jan 20, 2016 |
You have obviously misunderstood me.. there is nowhere I said minister of health equals surgeon general... Nigeria's health system is quite like no other... I was just trying to infer from my post that the head of any medical team is always the doctor (M.D) however you want to look at it... Particularly in the Nigerian context, it is imperative that a doctor heads the health system.. allied health workers should remain just that...allied! And just curious, the chief medical officers you met, were they doctors or allied health workers... I have had a brief stint with UK NHS, pls humor me and tell me they were allied health workers... teamchocolate:Ok. But in developed climes, we talk of multidisciplinary team. We now have "nurse specialists, consultant nurse".....and so on. Nurses are doing more specialised job, and delegating more jobs to nurses, provided they are trained to do so, is the way forward. Patients get treated quicker. Midwives now do a whole lot, and O&G docs don't have to see some at all. Same with dialysis & to some extent with chemotherapy/radiotherapy. Why this epistle? Because you might be in a position in the health service some day to bring progressive approach. That way, the cat & mouse thing between docs & other healthcare professionals in 9ja will reduce. |
| Re: Lassa Fever Claims 63, Spread To 17 States by AreaFada2: 1:28am On Jan 20, 2016 |
Over all, our major healthcare problem in 9ja is poor primary care. No family doctors/general practitioners in the communities to see people, educate, vaccinate and so on. Prophylaxis/preventive care would do a lot to improve health care. Even now that Lassa fever is around. Primary care ought to be the first point of contact for worried patients. |

Funny enough the Benue state that rat is their major meat is not on the list. On the lighter mood. This lassa fever is serious and I know how deadly it is . I remember when this happen in Liberia early 2014 .Pease our government should try their best. It is more dangerous than EBOLA . |
