Yesterday, HKN chief Davido signed what looks like a mouth watering deal with Sony Music. According to Davido, he is the first Nigerian artiste to sign that kind of deal, that is untrue. Nigerian music stars have hustled for top international music and distribution deals in the past, even before Davido recorded the first song of his career.
How has the international deals they signed affected their careers? How successful was it? takes a look at some of our celebrities and their past/present international deals.

Patoranking

After breaking through the tough storm of Nigerian music business Patoranking proceeded to sign a distribution deal with VP Records, a record label that is famed for housing some of the biggest dancehall stars in the world.
How the deal has affected Patoranking ’s career cannot be pinpointed out exactly as he was destined for great things before the deal. Patoranking is due for an album but is yet to put one out, might be because of complications on album rights.

P-Square
Despite their impeccable level of success and legendary status, music duo P-Square proceeded to sign a deal with Universal Music Group in South Africa, 2012.
The deal was signed during the May D days.
Coupled with signing with Universal in 2012, they also had a deal in place with Akon’s Konvict around that time. It is fair to say P-Square benefited from their international deals because of the success of their tours.

Wizkid
Akon announced Wizkid has signed a deal with Konvict in 2012.
Excited Akon took to Twitter that year to tweet “It’s official, Konvict/EME is now the official label for Wizkid worldwide. Wow. Hope you ready”.
The Konvict deal opened door for Wizkid internationally but looks like it has expired now.

Don Jazzy
Before Mavin Records Don Jazzy signed a forgettable production deal with GOOD Music. That deal remains one of the worst business decision in the history of Nigerian music. It was the beginning of the end of him and his partner Don Jazzy.
Don Jazzy appeared to walk out of that deal before 1 year and he said in an interview that he wished he didn’t sign it

Seyi Shay

UK returnee Seyi Shay penned a deal global recording contract with notable record label Island Universal Records, UK.
Seyi Shay has since released her long awaited debut album Seyi or Shay. Looks like the deal is doing wonders in her life.
Asa

Bukola Elemide better known to her fans as Bukola Elemide is under international tutelage. The 33 year old is signed to Paris based Naïve Records. Asa is also signed to Sony BMG.
Asa’s deal is a very positive one as her music is not particularly for Nigerian consumption

Brymo

After leaving Choc City, Brymo signed a new recording and distribution deal with US based music company,
Tate Music Group.
Under Tate Music Group re-released his first international album, Trance, under the Tate Music Group imprint. The 8- track album will feature selected songs from Brymo’s last two albums; Merchant, Dealers & Slaves and Tabula Rasa.
We are not sure how the album is doing in the market

Cobhams

Music producer Cobhams Asuquo is currently signed onto Sony ATV (Sony Publishing) London as a songwriter.
Cobhams is doing very well for himself and is one of the few artistes that prefer to let their work speak for them. We think his international deal has impacted positively on him

Seun Kuti
Egypt 80 Band leader Seun Kuti like his older brother
Femi Kuti has also signed to several international record companies in the past. He is currently signed to Knitting Factory Records, KFR, the same label his father was signed at the time of his death.
Seun Kuti has in the past signed to Mr Bongo Records, Tôt ou tard and it has done him a lot of favors. Seun’s music is well accepted at-large.

@ Op, its really sad that people like you just talk about D'banj as if he is finished, I totally disagree with that. Most songs that are hit in Nigeria music now are totally rubbish lyrically e.g Shoki, Indomie, Reggae Blues, Efejoku, Sanko, Daniella Wine, Allobam, shaki ti bobo etc.

If one or more songs of the above mentioned songs could be accepted by you then D'banj ain't finished. Kindly tell me the song(s) that released under GOOD Music label that is worst as you claimed.

Its better you said you ain't interest in him than saying Bangalee songs are bad.

Please stop degrading Koko master for us, I think you might be one of Don Jazzy fan and I believe He will remained the best and Biggest Artist Don Jazzy will ever work with.
