Hmmm..

Maybe I'm missing something. She has impressed me as simply looking to ascertain her marital status.

The best place to ascertain her marital status is at her county or state's Registry of Deeds.

Completely untrue.

You are apparently somewhat savvy on the matter. Please instead of responding with an argument please spend some time on USCIS.Gov to add to your knowledge base.

+++++++++++

From USCIS.Gov

Remove Conditions on Permanent Residence Based on Marriage
Your permanent residence status is conditional if it is based on a marriage that was less than 2 years old on the day you were given permanent residence. You are given conditional resident status on the day you are lawfully admitted to the United States on an immigrant visa or adjustment of your status to permanent residence.

Your status is conditional, because you must prove that you did not get married to evade the immigration laws of the United States. To remove these conditions you must file Form I-751, Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence.

Eligibility Criteria

Generally, you may apply to remove your conditions on permanent residence if you:

Are still married to the same U.S. citizen or permanent resident after 2 years. You may include your children in your application if they received their conditional-resident status either at the same time or within 90 days as you did;
Are a child and, for a valid reason, cannot be included in your parents’ application;
Are a widow or widower who entered into your marriage in good faith;
Entered into a marriage in good faith, but the marriage ended through divorce or annulment; or
Entered into a marriage in good faith, but either you or your child were battered or subjected to extreme hardship by your U.S.-citizen or permanent-resident spouse.
Note: Refer to Form I-751 for more specific eligibility requirements

So which of the conditions qualify him?

Some people dont just listen and read the writing on the wall. What excatly do you need the number for Do you think they will attend to your calls They will tell you excatly the same thing you have been told here * that paper you have is not a married certificate * marriage certificates dont have expiry dates on them.

Just drop it woman and move on with your life.

I agree and that's in Nigeria where she got married (we have local governments here not counties), not the US.

There's nothing wrong with asking on here if her document is valid.

Very sad and shameful of him. Why deceive and waste someone's time/life. His family are in on it and KARMA will surely catch up to him. The document is fake, nor stamp. Move on, you shall rise

.

She already has a marriage that was accepted by the authorities according to her story. If something else came up while they were in US, the records will be there.

Hello everyone. I have a question and was hoping you could shed me some light in a matter. I am in America. I went to Nigeria in 2011 and married my husband. I petition for him in 2012 and he arrived to America in 2013. Three months later he left. He is here in America, just not with me. He just left once he received his social security number, his permanent visa and a job in two months of being here. I haven't heard from him nor seen him again. I been wondering for a long time if my marriage to him is valid. In the marriage license it says it expired in 2013. I don't understand that.

Was our marriage set up or arranged to be temporary? I don't really understand Nigerian law or customs concerning marriage. (I am not Nigerian) I know my husband was rushing me to get him here before that expiration date. I am very confused. I also went to the office of public records here in America and they couldn't find any marital records of me and my husband, nothing. On the back of my marriage license issued in Nigeria, there is a website of marriage records, I entered my name and his name and didn't find anything. It just says no records found. Am I married to him or was it all fake? Can you please help me find out? I'd appreciate it. Even if it was all a scam, I still have Nigeria in my heart and will never have anything against Nigeria and Nigerians. Just my husband. Thank you in advance.

I have never seen this and I'm Married to a Nigerian after you give notice which is Form A has to be displayed for 21 days, our licence was valid I think for 3 months in which time we needed to get married, I have a Nigerian Marriage certificate issued in Ikoyi, so if you dont have a certificate, or it wasnt in the green Nigerian scroll then Im sorry to say but you got duped into this, if your husband had been rushing this would have sent alarm bells for me, and surely the relationship and how you communicated would have given you some indication of his intentions.

This puts a bad name on the good men of Nigeria so shame on him, he will get his comings as they say what goes around comes around, I would contact the ministry of interior, and see what they say, your better to call rather then email, as they dont tend to respond to emails.

Can I ask, did you have marriage counselling prior to the so called Marriage ceremony if you had one?

Did you not read this http://www.nigeria-law.org/Marriage%20Act.htm the process is as follows(well in a nutshell)

-Notice form A

-2 Photographs

-Form is posted on the 'Notice Board' at the registry office for 21 days, which is also entered into the Marriage Notice Book.

-After the 21 days Payment of the Prescribed fee, the registrar would Issue a form C

-after meeting the requirements the couple swear an affidavit.
-upon proof that there is no unlawful impediment to proposed marriage, the minister will dispense the giving of notice, issue the certificate and grant a licence in which you need to be married within 3 MONTHS also this is known as form D.

-on the day of your marriage a ceremony usually lasts about 30 mins prior to which the Form E is printed i.e the marriage certificate which is filled out with both spouses details, then you sign them at the end of your ceremony.

-this is then be registered into the marriage book Form F...YOUR MARRIED
so if none of this is done then your not married

I am sure Portsmouth86 would soon navigate to this thread!!!

What a palava, poor woman, no one knows the full extent of this whether the woman was paid to get him to the US etc no one would ever know.

I know before I married my Nigerian Man, I researched the laws and the marriage process, getting married in a different country to that of your own I would have thought all potential spouses would look into that but guess not tongue

I hope those who are duped don't tarnish all Nigerians with the same brush.

The records at the Registry of Deeds where all births, death, marriages and divorce are recorded. She should go there and confirm if some water passed under the bridge when she was not paying attention. Those are public records and does take more than 5mins to get.

Regarding your second question, I would rather you take a guess. grin

Again, do you leave in the USA?

She got married in Nigeria, there is no record of her marriage in the USA.

Going back to Nigeria does not make sense. That part is long settled by the authorities. They have accepted what she has as a marriage document.

The state decides what document they admit and not the individual. That is why you can hold a piece of paper and refer to it as a legal tender because the state says so.

you are not married this is why there would not be any record of such, i listed the process above and a licence is only valid for 3 months and is not proof of marriage, that is only by way of a marriage certificate here is mine... (I covered our personal details)

That certificate does not look real, what is that at the bottom of it? It could well have been staged without you even realising.
plus you only fill in two one for you and one for the marriage book

could i suggest you make contact to the US Embassy in Nigeria, they may well be able to find information out on your behalf

I have no doubt that you're an American living in the USA and that you're legally married.

He would never have been given a spousal visa out of USEL otherwise.

Ours is just like the UK marriage certificate no colours at all apart from the ball point pen we used to fill it out

I have no idea if the certificates have changed over time im sure other Nigerian's here in the group can clarify if their certificates are the same like mine or if they were once like yours, I honestly have never seen it like this even my husbands uncle said to me this is fake.

Portsmouth86 It's so frustrating too, because on the certificate, on the bottom right side, it gives a website one can go to see the records, and I just visited that website and it seems to be down...nonexistence. I will definitely get in contact with immigration lawyers to do an investigation and clarify this once and for all.
